Archie Comics "Sonic the Hedgehog", November 22, 1992–July 19, 2017*So yeah. End of an Era, huh? Supposedly IDW will be publishing a new Sonic book soon (www.newsarama.com/35534-sonic-… ), but I find it doubtful it'll continue the story or characters of the Archie book (though honestly, given the space between the Archie book's cancellation and IDW picking up the license, one gets the sense this has been in the planning for a while, so who knows....). Still and all, it's just so strange to see such a constant in my life, as a Sonic fan and a comics reader, just...up and vanish like this. But if nothing else, it's nice to remember the good times.
Originally made for the 30 Minute Sonic Art Challenge on Tumblr (30-minute-sonic.tumblr.com/ ), so apologies if it seems a bit rushed, but I knew I had to make SOME kind of tribute to this long-lived classic.
(*we'll politely ignore the fact that the comic stopped publishing new issues in December of last year and was only "officially" cancelled this week)

Ian Flynn is pushing to get the Freedom Fighters (Sally, Bunnie, Antoine, Rotor, Nicole) in IDW Sonic for a 2020 goal following the ZOMBOT VIRUS arc.

Ken Penders had nothing to do with the Freedom Fighters anyway - The Freedom Fighters were even part of Sonic Sat AM which premiered several months after their first Sonic comic book appearance!

Man I remember buying this at the grocery store as a kid. Well... we had a good run and had a lot of stories, even to inspiring some of our own!

Yeah, I bought these books regularly for years, and I kept my finger to their pulse up until the very end. And I don't know that my vision of "Sonic" as a series will ever really shift away from it (and SatAM), even now that it's over and done with. Here's to the memories.

to be honest, I don't think this would be the last time seeing these awesome Characters.... but it's still sad that the reboot killed the comics.

It's a real 50/50 to my mind. On the one hand, these specific characters are popular with and important for a lot of Sonic fans, and IDW strikes me as a company smart enough to recognize that and carry them (if not necessarily the Archie continuity) over to the new book. On the other hand, half the reason we got to this point in the first place is because of the many legal headaches that accrued to Archie's cast of characters, and while that doesn't directly affect any of the characters here, why would SEGA, which was already taking a more overt role in the comics' creative direction in the years prior to the cancellation, want to risk associating their potential fresh start with all that baggage?

Aww I haven't been reading the comic for a while but I'm sad to hear this. I bought some issues every once in a while to see how it was going... it hasn't really caught my attention for a while, but still, it's sad knowing it's really over.

Yeah, it's definitely an odd sensation, given that even during those times where I myself wasn't much following it, it was weirdly comforting to know it still existed.

considering archie had to regularly fight tooth and nail to keep the archie characters around, even if the IDW crew genuinely wants to keep them, I doubt they'd get far
though that's archie vs. IDW, one being VASTLY larger than the other, so who knows

Yeah, it's exceptionally unlikely the Archie story continues at all, let alone in a form resembling where it was abruptly cut off. Heck, apparently IDW's "Transformers" comic was at one point intended to be a continuation of the "Transformers" continuity established by Dreamwave Studios, the previous publisher who held the TF license, back when IDW was getting started with their own TF books back in 2005...but Dreamwave had gone under amidst a cloud of controversy surrounding its owner Pat Lee, and IDW likely wanted to avoid chaining their own TF books to that kind of scandal. Likewise, it's not unfair to wonder if IDW would want to keep away from the whole Penders mess here...
...but at the same time, the Archie comic lasted 23 years, and has its own well-established, fairly-sizeable fan-base. I feel like IDW might be smart enough to recognize finding some way to continue that continuity and those characters would be a strong good-will move on their part. But we'll see.

Well at least there's still one comic series starring the SatAM gang to look forward to. Here's to you guys hopefully getting Sea3on back on its feet soon. It's up to the fans to keep the embers of these characters burning now, and inspiring work such as yours will be key to keeping the community going in the future.
