Description Another amusing Chucklewood Critters screencap, this time from Season 2's "Nora Know-It-All". In this particular episode, Buttons and Rusty have discovered a new pastime-kite-flying! A very typical activity for young children (well, it was-nowadays I imagine most kids are spending almost all their time playing video games!). Unfortunately, they don't seem to be having much luck, as their kites get tangled up in a strong breeze and come crashing to the ground. They don't really understand what the problem is, but decide to try again. Before they can, however, a strange older owl comes flying up to them. She's looking for someone, but it's not the cubs, and so she's off again in a hurry. Shrugging it off, Buttons and Rusty try again to keep their kites airborne. They're no more successful the second go-around, however-this time they end up ensnaring Quacker, the somewhat dimwitted and severely directionally challenged duck (Speaking of which, I will probably have a collage of him up soon...). Still not understanding why they can't seem to keep their kites flying, they decide to seek out Franklin for help. Let's just be glad they don't live in the Peanuts universe...otherwise a tree would've gobbled up their kites and they would've never seen them again

Anyways, Franklin knows what the problem is-their kites suffer from a lack of aerodynamics. Buttons has never heard that word before, and asks where "aerotymantics" can be found. (Have I mentioned that the cubs' difficulty in pronouncing bigger words is cute? Very true to life-indeed, I remember sometimes saying words wrong as a kid upon hearing them for the first time ) Franklin explains that aerodynamics can help something fly, and says their kites need tails. Thinking he meant actual furry critter tails, Buttons looks down sadly at his own small puffy little tail. "Not my tail, it's too short!" Seeing Rusty's longer, fluffy tail gives him an idea. "Use Rusty's," he remarks here as he tugs on his fox buddy's tail, "it's longer!" Needless to say, Rusty doesn't seem too happy to have his tail pulled! Franklin begins to explain that's not what he meant, but the older owl lady from earlier shows up...and needless to say, I don't think they'll forget her visit!

This is a very cute little scene, but...gosh, that's not really nice of Buttons to suggest using his friend's tail to fly a kite, is it? Children, do not try this at home! Rusty doesn't like having his tail tugged on, and with good reason! It's a physical part of his body, so of course pulling on it will hurt him! At least Buttons didn't do it too hard, otherwise he could've really hurt his pal! I'm sure most of us out there have found out firsthand how much creatures appreciate having their tails pulled when we were little-and promptly got bitten or scratched at by our childhood cats/dogs! Like I said...don't do this to animals!

I think Rusty probably didn't mind it as long as Buttons was being gentle, nhe probably has more of an issue if there was a kite attached though.

Let's hope Buttons wasn't actually planning on stringing up Rusty to a kite by his tail! He may be an energetic and adventurous little fox, but I don't think he would agree to that, do you?

Seriously though, this is a terrible thing to do to an animal. They will most definitely let you know how much they hate it!

Yeah but don't forget these are animals themselves, so perhaps they instinctively know how hard to tug on a tail? Perhaps Buttons and Rusty play such a game in secret, who can say?

More-or-less fully anthropomorphic animals who serve as the wild animals of the world, mind you

I'm aware children can sometimes have strange or unusual games they like to play, but somehow...I don't think tail-pulling would be a popular game for furry children Besides, as this scene points out, Buttons doesn't have much of a tail to tug now...does he?

Nope, but boys being boys they'll probably might find what happens if you pull a tail too much to be very amusing, no not to cause pain, but the other more obvious thing. Oh boy, I'd hate to be Abner or George when their sons ask them about certain functions of the body and why it's amusing to them? Even worse, I'd hate to see them ask their Moms if their Dads find it hard to explain.

But no I see this was the show attempting to do some slightly cheeky humor, yet making it tasteful as they were aware of who their audience was.

Ah yes, potty humor. In a few years it would no doubt be the pinnacle of comedy for Buttons and Rusty But no, it's a franchise aimed at younger children. A bit uncommon to see "edutainment" series use potty humor, although there are some exceptions (I remember there were a handful in Arthur, for instance!).

You know, this also made me think...when Buttons and Rusty grow older their feelings for Bearbette and Frisky are doubtless going to intensify, and they'll start wondering about, er, 'those' thoughts. Can you imagine them trying to ask their Dads about those sorts of thoughts and the 'facts of life'? I get the feeling they'd be completely flummoxed and it'd ultimately be up to Bridget and Rosie to explain to them!

Oh yes definitely. The fathers would probably go straight to the point, while the mothers will go into more detail and tell the cubs that they might be too young to act upon physical feelings, but they can still remain friends with Bearbette and Frisky.
