Description Updated Aug. 2015

Serious Mr. Darcy and witty Miss Bennet are my most beloved fictional couple. I've liked them since primary school, when I saw a play of Pride and Prejudice the older kids put together. I drew them for the first time in 2006, so you see, they were overdue for a makeover.

Dear me! Not bad at all!

Some initial reflections. Regardless of my political qualms about any professed admiration of Austenian social setting, almost everything in this work resonates so much more deeply than before, and the quality is from a different planet compared to the earlier one - which, as I think I must have written, I already found to be very reliable, visibly high-quality work.

The Darcy figure has turned into a Colin Firth -influenced (I don't mind at all ) one. The cocky nonchalance of the previous male protagonist has almost entirely been liquidated. I think you have done good work with Elizabeth's body. Her gestures, if actually not the way in which she looks at Darcy, are now more nuanced and complex.

Questions of taste always remain. The earlier piece was very light and devoid of warmth. This one's dusky and also emotionally darker. The previous one was clearly an also technically lighter piece. This present version is full of everything, which is more daring; partly because it's options of seeking refuge in sketchiness are slim. Thus, a heavily, multilayered contrast between lightness/heaviness. I think some might see the virtues of the lighter piece, but I'm still all for this more robust remake with its hazy background. It's warmer, more flickering and unpredictable now. I also like the rougher accents/texture on Darcy's garments.

Thank you, Iohannis. I'm happy that you think there's a big difference in quality. It's the best compliment. Yes, you are very right, new Darcy was influenced by Colin Firth (and a little by Matthew Macfadyen.)

Simceros In reply to ??? [2010-07-27 06:49:03 +0000 UTC]

Ginny, this is incredible. I think you've just outdone yourself!
Even though I still think that the picture from 2006 is really good, the new one just beats all standards.
The critique people gave you is true, even though I personally wouldn't notice myself (maybe the details and the hand, though) and the changes you've made are gorgeous.
I totally adore adore how you did the faces and the clothes. They're so complex yet simple because of the mild colours! The textures work marvellously, and the expressions of the faces are so lively.
The bg is incredible, it's so detailed yet it doesn't steal the attention from the heroes. And the candelabra is so pretty!
Overall I think this picture could simply go into the book My personal fave is Darcy's face though, he's so incredibly handsome
You've really made me want to reread the book!
