Description Hiya Deviants!

Not sure how much of a tutorial this is, as it's just to show how I work with some of my images.
Each job I do can be very different (as you'll see in my gallery), so this is just one way, for one style.

I've tried to explain it in a way that will work for people that work with a mouse too, and not just a tablet.

I've also tried to explain WHY I do some of the things in places too, so I hope it's not too much waffle

There are probably plenty of ways to get to the same end result, this is just the one that I use

Sorry that it's a bit boring, and the airbrush part was REALLY hard to explain without being in a video

It's also a bit rushed as I had to squeeze it between jobs, and internet issues, so please excuse any bad spelling etc.

I really hope it helps some of the peeps on here though.

p.s. :- I know Bambi has a missing foot. I used a pic from the book I was working on

This tutorial looks wicked cool. I'm trying to do the Disney line art style and I never thought of using the pen tool. It certainly looks like the Pen tool can produce some more better lines so I'll try using them sometime. Very nice work!

Amazing tutorial! I learned a lot of tricks I can apply to my own vector work. You explained the reasoning behind your actions very well, making it very applicable to a number of different programs and methods.

(To anyone who happens to be reading this comment: A lot of this, if not all of this, will also work in GIMP. You will have to access different menus to get the job done, but GIMP has a lot of the same functions.)

Thank you. I'm really glad if it helped in any way!
I'd only had a small go of GIMP before, so I knew it was close to photoshop, but wasn't sure how helpful it would actually be when I made this

It was helpful not so much because GIMP is similar to photoshop (though it certainly helps), but the way you laid out the steps and explained what each step was actually doing. It was very thorough

when i try to copy paste the lineart from illustrator to photoshop and use dark colors to color it (like for a black/grey cat) there is always white around the lineart, how can i get rid of it?

Hmmm.
Any chance you could take a screenshot and post it into your scraps on DA or something, so I can see what's going on

Rushed? Bah. Great tutorial! I hate Illustrator; I took a class on it and it still confuses me. I wish there were a way to return the colored, rasterized image back into vector or simply have Photoshop capable of vector images (not the way it is now).

what brush settings would you say work best? i have CS3 and not really loving the brushes they have. thanks for the tutorial btw!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrandMaster-J5 In reply to Rika24 [2012-03-19 21:43:09 +0000 UTC]

I don't use anything special. Just the standard brushes.
I'm using CS4, but the standard hard and soft edge brush has been the same ever since I've been using photoshop.

For the airbrush, Just the soft edge brush works fine for me. I set it to around 20% opacity most of the time, and build up the shade using a few brush strokes with the edge of the brush. I tend not to use the middle area of the soft edge brush so much, to get a nice smooth nice grad effect.

The line work base colour is also done using photoshops standard hard edge brush, set to 100% opacity.

Hope it helps

it really does. I have always thought that the professional artists did the lineart in PS O.o your method is much longer, but easier somehow.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrandMaster-J5 In reply to Miouwwww [2012-03-18 17:04:51 +0000 UTC]

It can be done in photoshop, The main thing about illustrator is, if you need to make the line thicker/longer/change the angle, you can just up the line weight, or move the point in real time, and at any stage.
Unlike photoshop where you'd have to do the whole line again.

It's actually alot quicker than Photoshop for this kind of Linework... when you get used to using illustrator.

Also, This style of Disney line needs to be really clean to get approved, and Illustrator is the best thing for it really.
It all depends on the job though

thanks for the tips Disney is the alltime biggest inspiration and to actually get to know the techniques is fantastic!

How did you get hired for these projects (hope you don't mind me asking)?

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you!
I'm joking of course. I'd never kill.

Just slightly mame

I'm freelance, but used to be employed by an illustration studio.
I got to learn many styles there, and luckily I can adapt myself to most of the styles I've been asked to do. This helps me out aLOT workwise.
I have a few contacts here and there who I harass relentlessly and I'm lucky enough to be able do this as a job
