Description This is part one of a big informative series I'm doing on polymer clay and clay goodies!

THINGS I WILL COVER:

Part One- Clay Basics [ you're looking at it ]
Part Two - Basic Equipment [link]

(still to come)
Part Three - Translucent Clay, Translucent Liquid Sculpey
Part Four - Chalk Pastels and Polymer Clay
Part Five - Acrylic Paint and Polymer Clay
Part Six - Texture
Part Seven - Simple Ways to Photograph and General Tips/Tricks

That's the plan anyway! Please, if there's anything you'd like to know just ask me and I'll do my best to include it or find a way to squeeze it in! Please not this is not for specific items or how I've made a certain item 100%, this is for general polymer clay questions.

Please excuse my typos ahead of time. D: I'm sure you know what I meant, so no spelling/grammar nazis please.

i has a question. will both sculpey mix with fimo? like will they blend well together? for example: mix pink. red fimo and white sculpey clay? like will they mix?

GrandmaThunderpants In reply to snowflower-princess [2013-06-21 20:30:58 +0000 UTC]

They'll mix. They're all polymer clay, just different brands. Think of it like different brands of bread-- they're all bread just with different brand names.

i just got into cland i made this chibi charm is about 4 inches tall and 1/4 in thick i was wondering because its so long do i have to bake it longer even though its only 1/4 in thick? if you need it its made of mostly sculpey and a small amount of premo. thanks in advance!

Out of those clays which would be a good soft one thats not super soft like on a scale from 1-10 a 3. :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrandmaThunderpants In reply to Leapardpool [2012-07-27 04:57:25 +0000 UTC]

Premo is a good soft without being goo. FIMO is a firmer clay, but FIMO has a soft version (it says FIMO Soft on it) that can also be good. Sculpey III is very soft, but some can be harder. You should feel all the packages of clay before you buy them so you can avoid the ones that give to pressure very easily, and avoid the ones that are harder. If you're buying online it's a gamble so I would go with Premo if you're not able to feel the packages yourself.

*Talty recommended this tutorial as it's good to explain polymer clay. She wasn't wrong! This is brilliant! I'm just starting to get to grips with Fimo (what we have in England) and I just wanted to get some ideas on what was what.

So grateful I was recommended this! ^_^

Hi~~
I have a question, would using sculpey glaze be any different from clear nail polish?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrandmaThunderpants In reply to RiaIsAwesome26 [2012-01-20 03:56:40 +0000 UTC]

I've never used clear nail polish but I have heard from other people that nail polish damages plastic and since polymer clay is similar, I wouldn't suggest it. O: But I've never personally tried it.

Hi have you heard or experienced anything about FireFly Polymer clay? it's everywhere and cheaper than all the other stuff but I'm only comfortable with Sculpy III (and apparently Premo now that I know they are basically the same thing )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrandmaThunderpants In reply to Nindeanwa [2011-10-19 15:45:08 +0000 UTC]

I've never heard of FireFly clay. O: If you get some and test it out, let me know how it is!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nindeanwa In reply to GrandmaThunderpants [2011-10-20 19:43:48 +0000 UTC]

allright, it's everywhere where I live D: and probably a couple cents cheaper? idk they have lots of molds and tools but it looks like it's more directed towards much younger kids, but hey clay is clay right? as long as it doesn't crack and isn't terrible to work with I'll probably get it more than just once xD I have to get some more clay soon so I'll let you know what happens

WitchZilla [2011-10-14 10:12:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm using air-dry clay to make beads for a necklace. I've painted it with acrylic paints already. Would you recommend Sculpey glaze for it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrandmaThunderpants In reply to WitchZilla [2011-10-14 13:54:06 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, I've literally NO experience with air dry clay except model magic when I was a kid. I suggest you just go ahead and try it yourself on a test charm you made and see if you like how it turns out. :3
