Description

Finally made a proper ref sheet for my sona/feral form/rep/proxy/etc. Original notes on her, worked out back in 2009, can be found here: orkid.deviantart.com/art/Finso…

Some things have changed since. I've omitted the idea of a bent tail fluke, and the marking on the inside surface of the right pectoral fin. But overall I'm happy with how the design is now, and I threw in some fun facts based on my background.

EDIT: updated the image itself so the lineart is more anatomically correct, but the same assortment of facts remain included

*-*-*

M/D-016 "GRAYORCA" ("grah-ey-orh-ka"; so named for her coloration)
alternate spelling "greyorca" also acceptable

General Data
Species: Orcinus orca / Killer whale / Orca
Subspecies: 100% Icelandic / Type 1 Eastern North Atlantic
Sex: Female
DOB: 08/15/1988
Length: 15 ft. / 4.5 mtrs. (approx.)
Weight: 6,000 lbs. / 2721 kilos. (approx.)

Differentiating Characteristics
- Gray, off-white coloration
- Blue-green eyes
- Oval-shaped, tapered eyepatches
- Facial freckling on rostrum and 'cheeks'
- Closed, swooping saddlepatch
- Clean, unmottled tail flukes

Behavioral Tendencies
- Logging, napping
- Traveling close to shore
- Socializing with grandmother M/D-001 and mother M/D-015
- Sporadic socialization with little brother M/D-017
- Breaching, spyhopping
- Interaction with smaller creatures, such as seabirds, crustaceans, and sharks

Finds Aversive
- Scenes involving mass congregations of unfamiliar orcas
- Heavy boat traffic, particularly speedboats and jet skis
- Turbulent weather
- Artificial/human-made garbage
- Kelp beds

Notes: (to date)
- "Gray" is a sexually-mature female orca who does not appear to have yet had calves of her own.

- She is only the second orca in her given family to have presented with such striking and abnormal coloration (the first being her grandmother, M/D-001).

- Her family's documented range spans from the northern end of Long Island, to the southern reaches of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. They are most frequently seen in and around Cape Cod during the summer months.

Very rarely does the family deviate from its established migration pattern, seldom regrouping with other related pods led by M/D-001's younger sisters.

- While initially shyer at a younger age (thought to have endured some alienation due to her physical appearance), she is now considered approachable during observational boat trips.

- Since the disappearance of her aunt M/D-014 in 2003, Gray seems even more reluctant to leave her mother M/D-015's company (the inverse also being true). This appears to be a conscious choice, hindering any instinctual desires to start her own family within the matriline.

- She appears to prefer albacore tuna as a favored prey item, and will hunt for a school solo when given the opportunity (despite the diminished chances of success). Otherwise, she hunts and feeds on herring when in the company of M/D-015 and little brother M/D-017. Together, they have been known to follow boats that fish with seine netting.

Thank you. And the best part is, except for her more-stylized markings, it's not unrealistic. At least one gray/leucistic orca has been photographed: pugetsoundblogs.com/waterways/…

Only thing I don't like about this is her lineart. I need to update it.

As do I.

I'm unsure, but I'm presuming he/she didn't. This was taken in 2009, but at a glance, it doesn't look like any other photos have surfaced.

So sad
it would have been lovely to see an baby orca grow up into an adult and perhaps have some offspring in the future

Thank you. I'm glad I finally got it done, and clarified just how many freckles/pockmarks she has.

You're welcome.

Her freckles are the most difficult part. I'm always worried I'll get them wrong =c

All the more reason to establish what the pattern is on each side of her jaw with this image. They can also be seen plainly in "...", too.

You're welcome.
Yes. This is probably the only animal design of myself I'll ever bother with.

I noticed that. But you seem to've kept it narrowed down to a nice manageable number of incarnations for her.

Thank you.
