Description
in the image:
Several years have passed, Maedhros is his cunning self, and Elured learns he has more family than expected.
So here's my idea/headcanon: maybe (and it's a very loose maybe) Maedhros tried to get Elured and Elurin to a good family, but after the kinslaying I really doubt there was a sindar family who wanted to come within 300 mts close to any Feanorian, and there probably were very few nobles left in the feanorian camp to let the kids be fostered with, so I imagine that after a loose search for a suitable family Maedhros simply decided to keep them.
Thus Elured and Elurin would grow up knowing the feanorions killed their kin, but at the same time having them as their guardians/caregivers/sole source of affection (and if there was something like family therapy in Beleriand, you bet they'd the first to enrol), and because I like to imagine the twins are the forgiving kind, they choose happines and contentement over bitterness and revenge, and so they have lived as the sons of Maedhros since then.
Also, notice how well cared for Maedhros looks here (braided hair, more-or-less bright clothes), so I imagine having βsonsβ would have a good effect on his general state of being.
Additionally, in this headcanon Maedhros tried to look for the twins' sister, but he never actually found out whether she lived or not (and as was previously stated, sindar were not forthcomming with information). Maedhros suspects she's alive, and that one of her retainers is probably in posession of the silmaril, he might also have an idea of where to look, but no proof enough to rally his troops and point them at a settlement.... until now.

Maedhros would have been an amazing father.

Elwing probably assumes her brothers are dead. That would be a pretty bizarre and hazardous family reunion.

yes, I believe this, she probably thinks they are long gone, so even if Elured and Elurin show up in Sirion trying to warm them from the army of Angband (and probably also the feanorians) no one will believe it's them... sad.
and even if she believes it's them, what could they possibly do to prevent a third kinslaying???

oh no, that is a big danger....get there quickly!
on the other hand, now I got a mental image for a bonus image to this story: Elrond and Elros disagreeing with uncles Elured and Elurin on whatever the youngest twin duo is to call Maedhros "uncle" or "grandpa" as they would be the second set of twins into that odd family and Maglor smirking at Maedhros in the background with a comment like "Mom would be proud, you are a grandpa"Β Β Β Β Maedhros: "No, this time YOU get the brats."Β Β
