Description

For some reason, people think Maglor is the one son of Feanor that resembles him the least.

I beg to differ.

In the image:

Maitimo is –once more – trying to get everyone fed and rested… with varying results. Nerdanel barely made it to dessert, but it hardly counts because she returned to her study after the kids were put to bed. Maitimo tried for the second time to convince his father to go back to the main house and take a nap, but Feanor – once more- ignored him in favor of science! …and then Maitimo opened Makalaure’s room and realized workaholism might be genetically transmitted because it’s obvious his brother spent the night composing.

So there it is, another fanart for Tolkien. I kinda have the idea Maitimo was the designated babysitter…and occasionally the parentsitter too.  (he probable made dinner too!)

I placed Nerdanel’s study in the attic because that way she is far away enough to focus on her art and still close to her kids; Feanor’s lab in the other hand, is in another building, because  he was a jewel-smith and to me that sounds like “mad scientist who plays with minerals and chemical reactions and things that catch fire” so it was probably wise to keep all those chemicals away from his progeny.

And then there’s Makalaure, who spend all “night” writing in bed!

On another note, a musician friend told me that when you compose, it’s not necessary to play the instrument you’re composing for…is that correct? I dunno, but it sure is convenient if you’re composing after hours and your brothers are trying to sleep!

heh eh, this is soooo Rusa in his teenage and early adulthood years, trying to keep the younger family members fed and rested (that is, his younger maternal half-siblings, a female cousin by Maglor and the very unusual daughter of his only male cousin!) XD

It definitely helps a LOT to have access to an instrument when composing. Partly it depends on how good you are at theory and understanding how what you've written will sound when played. If you're as good as adult Maglor, I'd imagine it is no longer essential, but I definitely need to when writing anything that includes chords.

Fortunately the lyre Maglor's got there is a quiet instrument.

greenapplefreak In reply to EEHills [2016-03-10 16:48:02 +0000 UTC]

oh wow! thanks for that explanation! yeah, I was already suspecting something of the like... I know Maglor is like this super talented musician, so he might be able to compose with no instrument... when he reaches he peak right now he's still a child, so I thought I'd add the harp...

still... musicians... what you guys do either with your hands or your brains is like black magic to me!

YES. I've never seen this one before, and I'm immensely regretting that. It's perfect, and hilarious at the same time, and therefore I love it! The funny thing is that poor Maitimo must also have to pull all-nighters with the rest of his family, trying to convince them to go to sleep for once. (Fëanor: "Sleep? Sleep? What is this sleep of which you speak? Oh! You mean sleep! I consider it useless and an inefficient use of my time.") (Nelyafinwë: "...")

But yes, Fëanor totally sounds like the mad-scientist type, and you've just made it my personal headcanon. It's awesome!

Feanor is the kind of mad scientist: I mean, "i'm going to encapsule the ligh!" or "here! I made a spherical stone that allows you to comunnicate to someone who's miles away!"

yeah, he does! originally, Feanor was going to be awake for "two days" but the concept of night and day is difficult to make in a world where there's no sun nor night and the only change in the environment is from golden to silver light and that only happens every 70+ hours or so.

still, Feanor is probably one of those guys who neglects "sleeping time" for SCIENCE!

I don't think they know what sleep is, considering how hard they work on their obviously very different interests. But I think if he gives up, they'll all get so caught up in what they're doing they'll starve to death.

About your question: I play a few instruments (not well, but I know how) and compose little melodies now and then and your friend has a point. From my experience you don't need to be able to play an instrument to compose for it, but it greatly helps if you know how said instrument is played at least in theory, what is and is not possible and how the different instruments vary in their notations.
For example: you can play several notes at once on the piano, but only one on the flute and depending on what flute you play the same note sounds different. I have experience with soprano, alto and tenor flute (made of wood. I'm not a native speaker and some of the terms elude me). I can use the same note sheet for soprano and tenor and it will sound harmonic, only the tenor flute is an octave deeper, but that doesn't work with the alto flute. And that is just flutes and pianos.

So, yeah. Summed up it’s not necessary to play the instrument you compose for, but it helps to know the basics XD

That being said I really adore this, on all points. The technique, the colours, the family dynamics, I love it

The joke is, Maitimo must be just as bad as the rest of his family. It takes commitment to take care of a family of workaholics and to get it done he has to be a workaholic himself XD

Also makes me wonder how Nerdanel and Feanor found enough overlapping free time to produce so many children. Just a thought

greenapplefreak In reply to KiaMianara [2015-08-18 21:13:44 +0000 UTC]

Ok, thanks for the comment! so I guess that means that you can compose a little and if you only need to grab your instrument when you need to clarify on a specific note? that works for me!

I'm not a native either, but I think you're right, it should be called wooden flute... unless you have one of those misterious italian instruments?

now I wonder about Makalaurë, like being the one kid talented/obsessed in music, how many instruments would there be in his room? because if he only knew one instrument he'd have no trouble imaginign its sound, but if he handles more then you're right, he'd need to check witht he real isntrument...and then it'd be hard cause you just know Maitimo must be a ligth sleeper (all those brothers around!)

Maitimo: *wakes ups suddendly nothing stirrs, more importantly, everything is now dead silent*
Maitimo: whoever it is you better go lay back on bed and close you eyes before I rise from my bed.
*several sounds are heard, like a bunch of papers being shoved to the floor, the sound another person blowing out a candle, a 'tump' of a musical instrument being laid to rest, the pattering of tiny feet jumping back to bed, muffled giggles and mumbled curses*
Maitimo: good.

so true! Maitimo must be just as obsessed as the rest of his family!

I suspect Nerdanel and Feanor made their kids when either one of both of them were passing through an artist block.

Nerdanel: *runs until she tackles Feanor¨I'm stuck! distract me
or
Feanor: *embraces Nerdanel's waist from behind* I want to make all seeng stones and I can't figure out how!!! love me! cuddle me! never let me gooo!

thanks for the comment! I really enjoyed it!

KiaMianara In reply to greenapplefreak [2015-08-27 09:20:15 +0000 UTC]

Ah,no. The thing I play is apparently an English flute (or a recorder. I looked it up, but a recorder is a tape deck that can record things to me).

I have a program where I can choose the instrument and then put the notes onto the lines and the program plays the note, so I don't really need to check with actual instruments (my neighbors would be very happy if they knew what I'm sparing them). But if I wouldn't have that program my go to instrument would be the piano. To me it's the easiest to learn and relate the notes to and I can hit several keys at once.

As I said, from my experience Makalaurë wouldn't need to actually be able to play every instrument. It would be enough if he has a basic understanding, but you are right, his room would be awfully crowded either way. Maybe he has his own workroom? Many instruments are sensible to changes in humidity and temperature and dedicated as the whole family is to their crafts he would be just as obsessed about caring for his instruments as to playing and composing. I don't consider myself obsessed, but even I have a fit whenever my siblings "mistreat" my instruments ^_~

I learn so much when you write!
^__^

you're right! how could I not give Kano his own study?! now I need to draw a cool music room for him!

I think it's amazing hearing that you can play the flute but just as easily shift to the piano..it sounds like witchcraft to me...to put an example of how that sounds in my mind, is like hearing someone saying that just because they ride a car they can easily shift to a bus or an 18en wheeler (it's not, it's not! it's witchcraft! ...then again, music is probably the one art I'll never ever be able to produce so maybe that's where my 'witchcraft' beliefs come from...)
