This was supposed to be my 1000th deviation but apparently I've passed that already. Which tells me I really need to go clean up my gallery

Pony-drawing-tutorial thing because people have been asking to see my process Elaborates on this , in that I actually tell people what I'm doing

Had to sacrifice quality so it wouldn't turn out as an 8-megabyte .jpg file. If any parts are unclear tell me and I can type it out down here

I might make a follow-up tutorial for this one to further explain some things people didn't understand. I don't think I'll be editing this one, though, because it's already a huge file and my Photoshop can barely handle it

When you colour the outlines and it colours the inside with the outline

I just copied the lineart layer then filled in the spaces with the fill/paint bucket tool

Tutorial is fun, though I can't help but notice that Dash's eyes look misaligned... I'd put the visible eye way higher up. Might be the way her head is posed that makes it look like that though.

I think you're on to something with the gray background. Really does make it feel more like a sketch. A more comfortable setting.


I've found myself sketching light blue on white lately. Reminds me of when I used to draw things on the whiteboards at school lol.

Maybe this is just because I'm comfortable with this method, but it isn't that complicated Really it's just the knowledge of which lines to draw first so you get that neat, cohesive layering (except with this method you'd draw the lines in front first, while if you were painting you would paint the things in the back first).

The gray background tips works just as well with more traditional, digital drawings. Really helped out with my last submission, too! Thanks for that

Because Photoshop is too touchy for my tablet If I tried linearting in Photoshop then I would have to draw the line, then go in and shave it down so it actually would be smooth. That and with Photoshop I'd use waaayyyy too many Layers for characters with lots of colors (like Discord) >_>


Flash is a vector based program and automatically smooths the lines, but sometimes I still have to draw a line up to ten times until it looks right
