The black crap is obsidian. Specifically:
" If lava flows horizontally into water, Cobblestone is created. Using this you can create cobblestone farms.
If lava flows vertically into water, the water is removed.
If water flows horizontally into lava, a hiss and puff of smoke occur but nothing changes.
If water flows vertically into lava, Cobblestone or a hiss may result.
If water flows into a lava spring then Obsidian is created.
If vertically falling water touches still lava on any side Obsidian is created - even if the water would not run into the lava's square. "

I just gather so much wood and coal, then go down. And stay underground for eternity lmao. I never knew about the obsidian lava and the slimes.
What exactly do the slimes do?

When you kill slimes they give you slimeballs which you can use to make Sticky Pistons. They're aggressive but the smallest ones can't hurt you.

There is a way to get infinite water. Make a 1x3 hole in the ground. So there will be 3 slots in a row. Put water in the left slot and also in the right one, that way, when you use your bucket to pick up water in the middle slot, the other two (the left and right slots filled with water) will always refill it! INFINITE WATER!
Trust me! IT WORKS!

Me and my brother have been playing Minecraft lately, and we've been trying to get diamonds. The problem is, we've found several diamond blocks and use an iron pickaxe, but they never seem to drop diamonds... Is it just because the blocks dropping diamonds is at random, or is there some other factor?

griffsnuff In reply to Twilitmystique [2011-08-22 07:29:26 +0000 UTC]
You sure you use iron pickaxes and not stone? Because they should always drop a diamond ore

knight1015 In reply to Twilitmystique [2011-08-22 05:27:55 +0000 UTC]
If you use an iron or better pick axe on diamond ore, it will yield. If you use stone or worse, it will break, but nothing will yield.
Diamond ore is what you find in the ground.
Diamond blocks are decorative blocks made from putting 9 diamonds in a 3 by 3 grid shape on a crafting table.

Diamond blocks like diamond ore? Then you have to smelt it in your furnace. If it's actual diamond blocks, then you go to yo' crafting table, son.
If it's not either, random glitch? I dunno...

small ones don't hurt, but bigger ones can hurt. Mostly they're just annoying and push you and make squelchy noises.

Also, you make the minin' business look so easy. |D

Just a quick tip to make things a bit easier
*rather than look for lava, mine to bedrock, and go back up to layer 16(or anywhere between that and bedrock is good. but not below bedrock)level 1 is the first layer without bedrock, 2 is above it and so on. diamonds spawn 1-16
*every 3 blocks, build or have a pillar to prevent slime spawning.

I've always dug straight down; then when I was done, I face the ground and keep jumping while putting down stone or other blocks; this takes you to the top in a matter of seconds.

Thats not safe xD because you might dig right into a lava lake or a cave and die
