I am sorry for any typos xDWhen I color things, I dont really think to much, it runs on autopilot most of the time. I just try diffrent things out til I like how it looks, this shows some of that process I think xD hope its understandable.

I have both Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI and I recommend SAI. Photoshops really only better if you want all the cool lighting/effects or if you wanna do simple GIF animations like my icon.

Well, Paint Tool SAI is a nice program, though it is $50. Also, Photoshop and Gimp work for some people.

Well, there's a trial version, and Photoshop costs money too. The only free program I listed was gimp.

I agree with experimenting. I have been doing similar stuff lately, and tend to like to my work much better when I just run free with it
