Here's my entry to the Sonic CD contest! I placed in the top 50 for the US, and won a free copy of the game and a soundtrack CD. If you'd like to see more entries (as well as the winners), you can check 'em out on Sega's flickr account--there's a lot to see, so take your time! [link]Related content

Thanks! The geometry is the part that's the most fun to draw.

Hah, wow. This one looks great! Absolutely lovin' the palette. Feels real retro. Great job, man.
Did you happen to win somethin'? I'd be surprised if you didn't.

Thanks! I have to admit the palettes are pretty easy when you just take 'em right out of the screen shots (it's what I usually do!)
I did place in the top 50, so I'm supposed to get the CD and a download code for the game. I gather some have received them already, but I asked for the Steam version and it's not out yet, so probably I have to wait for that.
Thanks for popping over to check out my entry! Yours were really good, but you already know I think that.

The coulor in this image is so soft and vibrant, and I love that erratic zigzag pattern behind Sonic's peel out, it gives it a nice touch.

This is one of the best entries in the contest, when I saw it I was shocked they didn't chose it for the top 5. It really captures the frantic pace of Collision Chaos, and the Past-theme makes fits with the sunset pallette.

Thanks! There were a lot of really good ones that didn't make it, the judges probably had to make some tough choices, and I think they may have had some certain elements or themes they were particularly looking for, most of the winning entries share certain qualities beyond just being well drawn.

I looked at it and I immediately knew the level and the time period. This is so freaking action packed!!! Your attention to detail is astounding, even on the floating isles! And the baddies look so accurate -- exquisite!!!

Thank you! I'm glad you like the islands, I wondered if I hadn't overdone it on the texture there.

Geez, I love how you translated the stylized look of the zone into a spacious environment. Even though the background is a series of inanimate objects, everything here looks so dynamic and full of life. I really can't get over it. I was gonna say, "I especially love the purple layer in the background" but heck, it's all great. I mean, just look at the springs for heaven's sake! How can springs look so awesome?. To avoid my infamous wall-of-text comments, I will leave it at "This environment is freaking epic."
I noticed someone mention the way you drew him running is actually a ditched game effect?

gsilverfish In reply to rontufox [2011-12-18 11:42:36 +0000 UTC]
Thanks so much! That's exactly what I try to bring out, the backgrounds from the games have so much going for them, it's fun to try to work it into a real scene with a little depth to it.
And yeah, the running has a little reference to the Sonic 2 beta version. It's just the little blue line within the peel out "loop." They had his legs become a little spiral as he ran (here's a sprite sheet [link] ), and I just thought it would be good to have a little more blue down there so I put it in. The trailing red behind him is actually inspired by the scarf in Shinobi for 3DS, which I've been playing a lot lately.

I agree, the game backgrounds are so awesome in themselves, but I love it when people take them a step further like this and really translate them into dimensional worlds.
Aaaah, I see. I was wondering about that red trail behind him.

Great job and nice choice of setting. I don't think I saw many contest entries that focused on the "past" levels, and Collision Chaos' version is pretty cool. I like the Sonic 2 Beta style running animation you've got going on too!

I think the past levels have some of the best looks in the game tbh, but I might also just be biased because (as a US version owner) it was the only place I could hear the Japanese music. I slipped in the little blue beta-style spiral because it just seemed like the thing to do! Had all that space in there, after all!
Thanks

As much of a fan I am of the "original" versions of the characters and games, I think I actually like the US soundtrack to Sonic CD better. Blasphemy I know.

gsilverfish In reply to anonymousawhorse [2011-12-17 05:57:13 +0000 UTC]
Haha, I really do like the US soundtrack too. It has a totally different feel, but it's interesting and kind of encourages more of that quality of exploration the game has going. I love the Japanese soundtrack (and I love how it really changes the mood when you go into the past, contrasting heavily with the US version) and when I first heard it was changed, I was so angry that I kind of hated the US soundtrack on principle (even though I liked it fine before!) but eventually settled down and now I like them both.

While I've got your undivided attention, hopefully they'll do a Sonic 2 re-release so you can do some West Side Island level art! You hardly ever update anymore! Maybe a multi-layer piece starting with Death Egg Zone at the top and Mystic Cave at the bottom. hint-hint-wink-wink

Surely not! This competition was way tougher than I thought it'd be (specially basing on how the Sonic and the Black Knight one went like), there were some really impressive entries and I just really loved browsing through them! I'm glad to see there are so many people who love this game so much and expressed that through incredible artworks!
Also did you get anything from SEGA yet? An e-mail, phone call or the actual prize? I don't think they said when they were delivering it...?

gsilverfish In reply to Rokkan-Illidian [2011-12-19 05:26:39 +0000 UTC]
I got an email from their "promotion administrator" (they have a different company that handles this, apparently) saying the prizes would be available the first week in January. I asked for the Steam version of Sonic CD, so I guess that may have been an unintentional slip of the release date for that, too.
