Description
there are so many tutorials out there using really stiff methods of drawing to do really stiff poses and i know i am not the only one frustrated by this.so i decided to do a quick little tutorial on the good ol neglected gesture sketch!
the first lines that should hit the paper.
my sketchbook is so full of millions of these little gestures, that are jsut me tryingto find good poses out of my head.
anyways, i hope this is helpful to someone out there.
GOOD comments are great

this one as well as a few of ur other tut's have been very helpful to me as i am just starting out. thinking about getting a book by the name of "Drawing on the Right side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Have seen a lot of people say good/great things about her book.

hehe cool, i got the book and it seems cool so far.(still in the beginning of the book)tho i still like the way u do hings. keep it simple and easy and flowing. the more complicated u do it right from the beginning the more likely its not gunna come out looking "right".thnks for the reply btw!

now to just figure out how to relax my hand...keep getting cramps in it from holding the pencil to "hard" i guess would be the right way to put it. tryed takin deep breaths and what not to relax but hands still tensed up ><

Are you holding your pencil the same way as you write?
you should hold it between your thumb and index finger, underneath your hand
[link] this image cuts off but you should get the gist of what I'm saying. this gives you control of the pencil from your shoulder. that will open up your gestures quite a bit, and you will have much more fluid drawings. this also stops you from holding the pencil too hard.

ahhhh ok. (sorry for the late reply...been busy since i just got accepted to an online graphic arts college...) and k. i was told not to hold the pencil that way cus it was mainly used for painting and wasnt "correct". will try it out and hope my sketches/drawings come out better.

Thats strange because most people paint the other way, and you draw with the pencil under because it give you free motion.

ya no kidding. the problem with teaching something like art, is people are too subjective so the not so great ones only teach whats worked for them, and don;t necessarily teach all the options.

ya i'm just a stickley for the fundamentals and the use of traditional tools. programs can be learned from books, the drawing and the fundametals need the tactility that only traditional tools can bring

^ ^ thx for making such a good tutorial, i've always had a problem with stiff poses and had no idea how to solve it. Though ive already done 4+hours of gesture drawing since seeing this tutorial, I'm not sure if im doing it right...or even if there is a right or wrong way of doing a gesture. Anyhow there has been some progress, So thank you very much for that.

Glad to be of help. there really isnt a wrong way, so long as you capture the essence of the pose.
jsut keep the pencil moving =3

actually, yes it is. because you very obviously took the same class that I did, and learned the same techniques that I did. so this will be very helpful to people who haven't been through that course yet. but if you don't want me to comment on your art anymore, that can be arranged.

well you finally commented on the ART. thank you.
and we probably didnt take the same class, unless you wentto vancouver film school.

tsquared In reply to Marker-Guru [2006-05-09 02:35:27 +0000 UTC]
all college 'classes' are required to teach the same basic skills for the college level curriculum, and Freehand drawing is definitely a pre-requisite for other art classes, I know that for a fact because I'm studying to be an art major myself. I also know how the system works because my dad is a teacher and has been for twenty years.
and you're welcome.

Marker-Guru In reply to tsquared [2006-05-09 02:45:07 +0000 UTC]
Well, thats fine.
for art colleges.
but i didnt take a standard art college program.
as well as that, it varies from country to country (I'm in canada, not the states). *I* am an art teacher, thats how *I* know this.
regardless, of any of this, these are fundamentals that davinci and other masters used, so it gets taught down the line in various forms.
but this is all rather pointless to carry on.
I'm glad a comment on the deviation was in there SOMEWHERE.
