Description
Hey Guys!CHECK THIS $l@g OUT!
I am So Pleased with how this turned out.
At last year's Botcon, I hung around and 's art table like the fangirl that I am. ('Cause they're both really great guys and great artists too.) But I failed to realize until the last few minutes of the Con that the inked pages Casey had on display from his comic book work WERE FOR SALE.
I
, who's an even bigger Ironhide fan than I am (If such a thing is possible) bought this page for me, 'cause I was flat broke by then. And of course, I had to ask Casey if I could color it.
Then began the crisis of method. Because while I could (and possibly should) have made a copy of the original and colored it, what I really wanted to do was work on the original. It was a self-respect thing, and a materials thing as well. I mean, that comic board is AWESOME to work on. And I wanted to be "good enough" to color on the real thing. If it had been a one-of-a-kind inks page, I would not have even considered it. But it's a print; and Casey assured me that he could print out another if he so chose. (At least, I hope that's what he meant! We were all pretty tired by then!)
So yeah. This is me actually coloring on Casey's "real" art.
And I'll be honest. It felt GREAT.
MAJOR MILESTONE:
THIS PIECE IS DONE
ENTIRELY. IN. MARKERS.
It's not that colored pencils are bad.
It's that I use them as a crutch. I cover up mistakes with them. I add things I didn't know how to put in earlier with them. I wimp out with them.
But Not. This. Time.
Boo-the slag-Yah!!
Some notes on thought process and technique:
I always want to put Ironhide against green, for obvious reasons. This time, I wanted to experiment with those lights along the ceiling. I had in my mind a heightened version of that awful green-fluorescent office lighting -- something that would tinge walls and bounce around on everything else.
So I put in a lot of green highlights. In. Marker. (Those would have been the precisely the kind of crutchy things I would always before have put in later with colored pencil. This time I put them in at the beginning. Behold! PLANNING!)
I was worried about scanning. This page is 11x17. (And it was AWESOME to work so big. I could get into all the niggledy-piggledy bits! I basically need to find/buy a "lookie what I did!1" frame this size so I can display my work and feel spiffy.) But I've never done scan-and-stitch before. I was worried about creasing the paper, about dissonance between scans, about everything.
But it came out just fine! I was very pleased.
To conclude this lengthiness, I wish to thank everyone profusely -- for sharing, enabling, encouraging, and critiquing.
Casey =

No, I di different areas in non-grey mono-chrome. You do more than one hue on the same surface. I can never make that work.

Lovely. I agree that the ceiling colors set him off spectacularly. And I'm so impressed that you stuck to the markers and didn't "cheat". Nicely done.

It looks great! I wouldn't even know you scanned it in pieces and put it together if you hadn't said anything. And the lighting and highlights are awesome
Great job!

Sooo incredibly awesome. Obviously an Ironhide fangirl there It's a huge risk to take and color the original, I mean, I would never dare attempting that (if I had the talent for coloring, to start with) but it proves your awesome talents that you managed sooo incredibly well.
