Description
Is...is this a job for human rights activists or for PETA?Okay, this is something that has bothered me for years, and in all sorts of medium.
So I'm furnishing my little Animal Crossing cottage, right? But I don't know if I'm comfortable with keeping a caged canary (which is a furniture item) in the window when my next-door neighbor is a talking, four-foot-tall robin.
It's the same thing in what was one of my favorite childrens's show, Arthur , too. He's got a little pet dog, but one of his best friends is also a dog. And it happens again with Goofy and Pluto of the Disney universe; both are dogs, but they live in different castes of domestic hierarchy. What is this?
And when you encounter this sort of thing at such a young age, it's...I don't know, it's just crippling.

Hahah! I never thought about that in AC, but now I'll never be able to put up a Bird Cage again! And I remember that in Arthur, it always nagged at me too.

Less evolved variations, like humans and apes, caged birds and talking four-foot-tall robins.

Hum. Very true. It doesn't seem they expect kids to think these rational thoughts up thus they go into games. Yay for the industry - believing and thus encourging children to be idiots.

games are raciest when it comes to the animal kingdom. They just weren't born with the right fur/feather coloring ><

When I was a kid, I mulled this over myself. The only reason I could come up with is that cartoons are racists. Since Goofy and Pluto are different types of dogs...

How do you know that those shows aren't just sending subliminal messages that its ok to own your own species as pets, like slavery?

It exemplifies all the flaws of society, how we just accept them until they are pointed out.

Hmm... maybe the artists thought that seeing both roles filled by animals would be less traumetizing for wee tots than seeing the human/pet ideal reversed.
Or, y'know, animals are just adorable and filling both roles with 'em is good marketing?

Eh, maybe they were up a step in evolution?

Interesting question. Chalk it up to starving character designers that had more on the mind at the time than grand animal rights conspiracies!

Yeah, I have been thinking about how in stuff with anthros there are still wild animals and stuff. Maybe it's like how humans supposedly evolved from monkeys, but there still are monkeys around...I dunno.

harhar, sounds like Wicked to me.
Animals and animals! one can talk, one can't - though in the disney situation, i can't help but think Pluto could easily have outwitted them all.

Yet they still had equal employment opportunities at Disney studios: Pluto provided laughs at the expense of his own personal health just as much as Goofy.

oh, thought of another one. How come pluto is smaller than mickey, a DOG is smaller than a MOUSE. And where does all the beef in Pokemon come from anyway?

One more weird thing. (for now) In the redwall books, are they all human sized, cuz in real life a badger could not squish a fox. and a mouse would be eaten by a ferret. and whats up with all the shews?

..or you could just grow-up not really noticing these things (cuz you're stupid or something...not like me at all..... <_____<..)
anywho...to be honest, i've never really thought of it that way. now that you've got me thinking (oh noes), you make a very valid point. however, the whole we're-the-superior-species-cuz-we-talk-yo comes into play here, and i guess this is what the creators of these oddities keep in mind.
...that and it's easier keeping little canaries, little puppies, and Pluto-sized doggies. imagine owning a four-foot-tall robin...or a Goofy....

I wonder about that kind of thing everyday. OH OH OH!!!!! Heres another stumper. Why on Tom and Jerry did the dog sometimes talk, and Tom sometimes talked, but Jerry never, and I mean never, ever said anything. He laughed at Tom and the dog's pain, but never talked.
Never
