Description Is...is this a job for human rights activists or for PETA?

Okay, this is something that has bothered me for years, and in all sorts of medium.
So I'm furnishing my little Animal Crossing cottage, right? But I don't know if I'm comfortable with keeping a caged canary (which is a furniture item) in the window when my next-door neighbor is a talking, four-foot-tall robin.

It's the same thing in what was one of my favorite childrens's show, Arthur , too. He's got a little pet dog, but one of his best friends is also a dog. And it happens again with Goofy and Pluto of the Disney universe; both are dogs, but they live in different castes of domestic hierarchy. What is this?

And when you encounter this sort of thing at such a young age, it's...I don't know, it's just crippling.

I ALWAYS wondered about Pluto and Goofy, and Pluto is obviously smarter, yet is forced to be a pet.

haha believe it or not, i was thinking the exact same thing the other day. I'm still playing around with my old copy of Animal Crossing, I've paid off the debt a long time ago, but now I'm trying to collect most of the furniture, and lo and behold at Nook's shop was a bird in a cage... weiirrrddddd........

I never thought of it that way before. But good God, you're right. >_>; The things they do to kids now a days.. Back when I was young, Aurthor was really popular, and I remember all the characters not being human exactly, but it really is so weird that the less evolved versions of the animal world were treated as pets. Though, I guess that's better than them putting a baby human on the leash and saying THAT was fine..

I always thought about that and ended up at the conclusion that the ones that were pets were just a lot dumber than the ones that are peopleish and not much good for anything else, but now I'm thinking how hilariously horrible it would be if people kept other retarded people as pets. |D;;

Evolution.

Arthur's dog isn't a high enough level, nor is Pluto.

You're making it a bit too deep for what it is. They're cartoons. It's a video game. Who really cares? That's some emotional instability if it "cripples" you.

That being said, I do like the idea.

Your question is very philosophical... but I think about it this way: Pluto doesn't know that he's a "pet". I don't think any of the animals that we choose to share our lives with necessarily know that they're "pets," because to the people who truely care about them and love them, they're family members. Goofy can take care of himself just fine- he can go to work (if he has a job.. sometimes he does) and pay for his own food, cook his own food, clean his own house, etc. Unfortunately, Pluto doesn't have hands or a way to do any of these things for himself. I think that Goofy would be happy, or is happy, knowing that Pluto has someone as wonderful as Mickey to look after him and help him out.

Wild animals can care for themselves, but some of the animals that exist today in our households and on farms cannot do that. A dairy cow needs to be milked if she doesn't have a calf (they produce milk all the time- that's what they were bred for.. no they aren't kept pregnant, so don't believe that nonsense). If she didn't get milked she would suffer.

Overall, I think as the old saying goes:
"Set it free. If it was meant to be it will return. If it doesn't return then it was never meant to be anyway."
Does your dog come back when you let him off the leash and call his name? Pluto sure does come running to Mickey when he's not on a leash and he's called.. because he loves him. My cats and pet rats all come running back to me when I call their names- maybe 'cause they think I have food, but either way, they seem just as happy to cuddle up with me when they have a million other places to sleep. I think that's what matters- not whether or not someone wants to think I am enslaving them. Slaves leave when they have the choice, but most "pets" (or fur babies, if you prefer that word instead) do not.

It's easy to explain, one you have to train not to pee in the house & the other one can talk. It's when you see someone walking around the talking one on the leash that you need to worry.

Arthur's best friend is a dog? Which friend was this now?

Arthur is a poor example of this, because pretty much all the characters in Arthur just look like generic furries. Except for Buster, most of them don't really suggest their species.

Family Guy is a better example of this. Brian, the family dog, speaks and acts like a human, but still does traditional canine things. It is also acknowledged that he is the only talking dog in the world; all other dogs are regular dogs. The odd part is that nobody is amazed by Brian's ability to talk.

The actions of their previous lives determined what chaste they were born in. The anthro-dogs had done good deeds in their past lives, and were rewarded by being born as superior beings, anthro dogs, or the Brahmins of their world. The lowlier 'et' dogs must be subserivent to their masters because thier past live's actions were negative and weighted them down into a lower place in society, further from Nirvana, probably something like being an untouchable, but more or less shudra. It is all based on karma in terms of what form of being the soul will take on one life from the next... wait, I'm a Catholic, what the hell am I saying?

Oh!! This got me as well, when I was young!! I'd always ask my dad questions like "Why do Pluto and Goofy get treated so differently? Why is Pluto segregated against?" And a whole bunch of others! ...I was a really-- uh-- special kid. I always hated many Disney movies with animals as stars for that very same reason-- why are they discriminated against, when others aren't treated the same way? Aren't they the same animal-- and if so, then why?
Which is why my dad started teaching me WHY he, a white male, married my mom, a black female, and loved every minute of it.... He taught me a lot of values through things like this-- but I always hated the contradictions shows like that give.

lol I've never seen such sociopolitical angst over cartoon characters.
Although, it's something I've thought about as well. As far as Animal Crossings...I always felt awkward as the only human. Was always wondering if my beastial neighbors silently gossiped about my bipedal, tailes deformities.

Ya know what's an even BETTER philosophical mindfuck? In the Pokemon world, where are the animals they use for food? Surely they aren't factory farming Miltank for milk, Chancey for eggs, and Tauros for hamburgers. If there are normal animals in the series, you never EVER see them.

Actually, in D/P... there is finally some mention of this. There is a library in the game and some of the books have mention of hunting and one says something about 'icking the bones clean' of fish or magikarp or something. Which was... strangely dark for the series, heh.

I find it more creepy that both male and female Miltank have utters. But then again, even movies seem to get away with that now days... It makes me wonder how apparently NO ONE in their staff realized that boy cows don't make milk...

operatingthetan In reply to Saelyra [2007-05-29 19:27:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's true! I never thought about that, and in D/P don't the male and female pokemon look different? I guess a male Miltank wouldn't look like a Miltank if they removed the udder and added some big horns. Poor Magikarp...if there were any one pokemon I could see roasted and fileted on a plate, it's a Magikarp.
