Lol. Rainforest deer sounds stupid, or does it. Done for #Species-Directory 's tropical forest thing contest.

You can adopt this species, but please credit and note me if you do.

Got questions? Feel free to ask!

pencil sketch:

Text on the sheet:

Omnivoric, cattle-like mammal that lives on the ground.
Is a rather elegant climber. Feeds from almost anything: berries, plants, roots, rotten carcass/leaves, insects etc.
Uses the claws on its thumbs to get nectar or the like out of big blossoms, plants, insect nests or the like.
The fore horns on its head inherit pores that contain heat sensors - if searching for food in darkest night, they let their horns glide over the surface (kind of what pigs/boars do) to find small insects or the like.

Are quite agressive when breeding. Males fight for their group and territory in mating season, when they normally tolerate other animals of their species in their own territory. They hold little fights to prove their status as male animal that is allowed to reproduce. Males have bigger horns and buldges for the same reason.
Male-Female pairings normally stay together for a few years, then change partners to provide genetical variety. However, once a pairing has raised hatchlings the first time, they will remain connected to eachother. Then, both male and female part will grant special support to their ex-partner in daily survival (i.e. when in search of food, or protection against predators etc.)

They are live bearing and feed their hatchlings until the age of two years. The youngs stay in the group until they are old enough to take care of themselves. After that, they either stay in the group for a while, if the group doesn't exceed 6 animals. If the group is too big, they are forced to leave and search for or even found a new one. Single Rainforest deers can survive solely, but they prefer being by two even if they split up from the group of their origin.

Rather peaceful species that has no group-hierarchy. The oldest animal is normally the most experienced, and therefore leads the group. Amongst the other animals there is no clear hierarchy, though males that won the most fights in mating season have slight more rights as ones that lost.
Rainforest-deers normally are very sociable and gather on small
They let out high pitched shreeks to warn their horde against predators or other dangers. They are known for a broadth of different shriek sounds in mating season, also have different sounds for different messages. Means of communication: stomping on the ground (rage), nodding/shaking head (approval/disapproval), sinking head ("I want to challenge you"), shaking body (fear, suspect), hissing ("go away").
When finding a valuable source of food, such as their most favorite, tropical funguses, they will voice their joy by a short squeal.
