ANOTHER EDIT: Turns out early Charmander art DID have spikes on its back, it's Bulbapedia-gallery official! Found in trivia here [link] and on art such as [link] . Big thanks to *Twarda8the8XanaX for cluing me in.FIRST EDIT: WOW! Wasn't expecting so many responses! Here's some FAQ:
1) DO I REALLY BELIEVE THIS
Answer = Not really, just more than the Kangaskhan one
I think that the developers wanted a sob story to up the creepy/tragic atmosphere of Lavender town and so gave a Silence of the Lambs-esque backstory to one of their species.
2) IS THIS THE MOST LIKELY I COULD COME UP WITH?
Answer = No
This is the more fun and interesting one I could come up with. If I'd wanted hard-to-deny I'd have had the Cubone-Marowak species be into heirlooms so that the Cubone's mother's skull is one that belonged to her, not one that was scooped out from inside her head.
3) MAROWAK WAS ORIGINALLY GOING TO EVOLVE INTO KANGASKHAN
Answer = No
There's NO proof of this from developers. What IS true is that Kangaskhan was one of the first Pokémon to be programmed in and as a result Missingno can evolve into Kangaskhan. Missingno can ALSO evolve into Rhydon, however, and I hear no one claiming that's connected.
[link]
In all likelihood I think the developers would have said by now, at least in the Anime, if this was ever truly intended.
4) WHERE DID THAT CHARIZARD NEST STUFF COME FROM?
Answer = Okay, I made that up. I wanted a communal nest and Cubones as a frequent outcome because Cubones are by far the more common in comparison to Charmanders.
5) AM I COMPLETELY FLATTERED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE LIKE THIS THEORY?
Answer = Yes! Totally!
I thought I'd just get scolded for disagreeing with the oh-so-loved Kangaskhan one.
I guess at the very least I picked the right group to suggest this to, what's not Creepy Pasta-licious about a deformed, rejected and cannibalistic starter Pokémon?
Thank you very much for all the comments (including the curious/sceptical ones, feedback is feedback)!
...
And now back to the original description:
I really don't get the obsession over the Kangaskhan theory (see bottom right of pic for explanation on why). So here's an alternative!
Made worse by how I clearly can't draw Charmanders or Cubones! Heh...
Ah well. If I did a third theory it would be that Cubones start off as a bug Pokémon and that, upon hatching, their mums pass away (spider-style) and the young then eat the body. Yay!
Marrowak: Fits into this theory as some weirdos went on to decide Cubones were cute and encouraged these growth issues, eventually leading to a subspecies with a partial evolution (partial because getting a little taller hardly compares to growing horns/wings).
And if anyone has any reason to believe that baby-Kangaskhan-by-self sprite is OFFICIAL let me know?
...Blahblahblah. Whatever, enjoy.

This makes so much more sense then the kangaskhan theory, because you can't find charmanders and all that in the wild.

It's true, but lots of animals (real life and Pokémon) change colour as they grow up. Wild boar, tapirs, most birds, most amphibians, most insects... But it's still a better argument for it than some!

plus if any thing the mega evolution helps that Cubone, and Marowak are right before Kangaskhan in the Kalos coastal pokedex.

Went to look to read old Pokemon Manga again, www.mangahere.com/manga/pokemo… notice the Charmander on the cover. Those back spikes/spines look a lot like Cubones...

Awesome!
Someone pointed out they were on some early Charmander concept art but I didn't know they'd been used apart from that! Nice find, thanks for letting me know!

Easiest in-world explainations for Evolution mess ups? Team Rocket.
Though Red Gyarados is considered Shiny by many, if you go by the actual story - both in the games and Anime the 'mon didn't evolve right thus keeping the magikarp colors...

Trivia Section
- Marowak was originally supposed to evolve into Kangaskhan , but this was changed right before the original games were released.
Just saying because I wanted to say that their IS proof for this theory. I do enjoy your theory though its really good and I think yours is better But I'm just saying there that Cubone was meant to evolve

There seems to be no source for that factoid, even in their reference list. I think it's just such a common rumour that some sites have started to display it as fact. Bulbapedia (which has always seemed much more thorough) doesn't list it in Marowak's trivia.
I was told of a video of the staff confirming it but when I asked that person for a source they didn't reply. I had a go at looking for it myself but found no record of it.
I appreciate your commenting (thank you!) but I'm not believing it to be more than hearsay unless a staff member confirms it as having been the intention at some point.

Well, now that I think about it, Charizard's skull does look like Cubone's 'head' Because of Charmander's pale skin when it cannot survive, it looks a lot like Cubone's. But one question: Where did Cubone get the pale color on its belly? I am just asking.

HareTrinity In reply to Icedvore [2013-07-25 23:36:45 +0000 UTC]
Well, the Charmander has a pale belly too (you can see it on your icon), so I guess that just faded somewhat with the skin colour?
Or did I misunderstand?
Either way, thanks for the comment!

One of the reasons the kashangastan thory is supported is because kashangastan guards the baby to the death. But this is very creative.

Can if you like! There are a few inconsistencies with the Pokédex though (e.g. that it's not necessarily the skull of the MOTHER), so watch out for those. I meant to do a little follow-up comic to build on that...

Wow very nice! This actually makes far more sense than all the other theories involving Kangaskhan. I honestly never had any idea how anyone supported that idea in the slightest. And while this is most likely not "true" by official standards, it's good enough for me! XD

HareTrinity In reply to SlowerThanZero [2013-02-20 17:38:48 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
And yeah, the Cubone-Kangaskhan theory mostly seems to come from someone editing a Cubone sprite to look like a baby Kangaskhan, putting it next to an unedited Cubone sprite and saying "DON'T THEY LOOK SIMILAR?", at which point everyone forgot that there isn't an official baby Kangaskhan sprite.

hmm... charmander with an aerodactyl skull?
what's to say pokemons Charizards and Rhydons families (could add others like Nidoking-queen lines) don't have territory wars/battles thus youngling could find itself in graveyard; often accidental Aerodactyle skull best protection for it, as for food... do I really need to say?
we have skeletal sprites of Aerodactyl.
Cubone skull shape fits the firered/leafgreen sprite skele of aerodactyl.
fits better too with the Marowak evolution's skull...
hmm...
I like these things about Pokemon.

Regardless, I like this... But there's a bit of a problem with Cubone's skull-knubs not matching up with Charizard's...
yet; Cubone's skull and bone do fit perfectly with Charmander... See panel from my sprite comic [link] found at [link]

I wonder if Nido-line and Rhydon is also related to these guys. Maybe inworld Marowak's actual mom got killed during evolution/corruption? and the Marowak had to take on the mother role for it's little sister/brother?
I like looking into thing like this.
I recall actually seeing a real review where Kangaskhan was meant to be Marowak's/Cubone's final evolution.

I'm not trying to be hostile, I've just had people (some impolitely) try to tell me I'm wrong because other people edited a sprite (the Cubone sprite into a "baby Kangaskhan") and passed their theory off as fact.
