ANOTHER EDIT: Turns out early Charmander art DID have spikes on its back, it's Bulbapedia-gallery official! Found in trivia here [link] and on art such as [link] . Big thanks to *Twarda8the8XanaX for cluing me in.FIRST EDIT: WOW! Wasn't expecting so many responses! Here's some FAQ:
1) DO I REALLY BELIEVE THIS
Answer = Not really, just more than the Kangaskhan one
I think that the developers wanted a sob story to up the creepy/tragic atmosphere of Lavender town and so gave a Silence of the Lambs-esque backstory to one of their species.
2) IS THIS THE MOST LIKELY I COULD COME UP WITH?
Answer = No
This is the more fun and interesting one I could come up with. If I'd wanted hard-to-deny I'd have had the Cubone-Marowak species be into heirlooms so that the Cubone's mother's skull is one that belonged to her, not one that was scooped out from inside her head.
3) MAROWAK WAS ORIGINALLY GOING TO EVOLVE INTO KANGASKHAN
Answer = No
There's NO proof of this from developers. What IS true is that Kangaskhan was one of the first Pokémon to be programmed in and as a result Missingno can evolve into Kangaskhan. Missingno can ALSO evolve into Rhydon, however, and I hear no one claiming that's connected.
[link]
In all likelihood I think the developers would have said by now, at least in the Anime, if this was ever truly intended.
4) WHERE DID THAT CHARIZARD NEST STUFF COME FROM?
Answer = Okay, I made that up. I wanted a communal nest and Cubones as a frequent outcome because Cubones are by far the more common in comparison to Charmanders.
5) AM I COMPLETELY FLATTERED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE LIKE THIS THEORY?
Answer = Yes! Totally!
I thought I'd just get scolded for disagreeing with the oh-so-loved Kangaskhan one.
I guess at the very least I picked the right group to suggest this to, what's not Creepy Pasta-licious about a deformed, rejected and cannibalistic starter Pokémon?
Thank you very much for all the comments (including the curious/sceptical ones, feedback is feedback)!
...
And now back to the original description:
I really don't get the obsession over the Kangaskhan theory (see bottom right of pic for explanation on why). So here's an alternative!
Made worse by how I clearly can't draw Charmanders or Cubones! Heh...
Ah well. If I did a third theory it would be that Cubones start off as a bug Pokémon and that, upon hatching, their mums pass away (spider-style) and the young then eat the body. Yay!
Marrowak: Fits into this theory as some weirdos went on to decide Cubones were cute and encouraged these growth issues, eventually leading to a subspecies with a partial evolution (partial because getting a little taller hardly compares to growing horns/wings).
And if anyone has any reason to believe that baby-Kangaskhan-by-self sprite is OFFICIAL let me know?
...Blahblahblah. Whatever, enjoy.

If Charizard then, mother could have been poached or somesuch... like what some people do to get small young apes for illegal pet trade often have to kill the mother which traumatizes the youngling.
Really, I don't blame little Cubone for being how it is...

A few bits are off, I'm planning a follow-up comic to tweak it to match the Pokédex better.

I always thought that the skull cubone wears looked like an aerodactyl. This would explain the flying type.

That's my second choice, but it's harder to link the body shapes... I'm planning a follow-up to this that'll cover most of the other points though, I wasn't expecting it to get so many views in the first place!

didnt the little girl in lavender town in pokemon red/green/blue say that she was looking after a cubone after team rocket kill its mother? and the spirit of lavender town was a kangaskan? and oddly in pokemon yellow the first pokemo game i think i heard something about cubones final form was originally kangaskan but then nintendo deleted the missing link and made it a missingno

HareTrinity In reply to PaperMasking [2012-09-29 16:20:03 +0000 UTC]
The spirit in Lavender Town was that of the mother Marowak, which honestly makes more sense than any of these theories.
The Kangaskhan theory is as baseless as this one, it just annoys me how many people think it's true. Kangaskhan was one of the first Pokémon programmed in, along with Rhydon, so Missingno can evolve into either of them (though no theories have been connected to the Rhydon that I know of).
But someone edited a Cubone sprite into a baby Kangaskhan and the theory took off.

I have also an idea for a little fan-story, called "The first Cubone". And I want to use a
charmander, too xD

I'm going to do a follow up to this eventually. It helps that someone pointed out the original Charmander designs having spikes on his back.

It's a glitch Pokémon in the original games that could be used for 99 of an item but (if done wrong) could mess up the save.

Uh your theroy is lacking
Cubones ARE ophaned baby Kangaskhan that have lost their mothers.
their original name is Orphon (a corruption of the word Orphan)
plus a cubone's skull is nothing like a Marowak skull and the snout of the skull is to thick and round to be a Charizard skull.

HareTrinity In reply to CrazyGoomba [2012-06-01 16:42:47 +0000 UTC]
Isn't that because the Lavender Town plot is that the mother Marowak had died?

It makes since with The Charizard head. Another one I heard of was it being an Aerodactyl Baby that lost it's mother. It was figured that way because missingno is a Flying Normal type.

I'm vastly, vastly impressed. I could never have come up with this, and I'm shocked anyone could. AMAZING.
The only extra details I'd like to know would be the parts about the "wing deformities" and "spine deformities" but other than that I can only repeat what I've just said...<3
