ANOTHER EDIT: Turns out early Charmander art DID have spikes on its back, it's Bulbapedia-gallery official! Found in trivia here [link] and on art such as [link] . Big thanks to *Twarda8the8XanaX for cluing me in.FIRST EDIT: WOW! Wasn't expecting so many responses! Here's some FAQ:
1) DO I REALLY BELIEVE THIS
Answer = Not really, just more than the Kangaskhan one
I think that the developers wanted a sob story to up the creepy/tragic atmosphere of Lavender town and so gave a Silence of the Lambs-esque backstory to one of their species.
2) IS THIS THE MOST LIKELY I COULD COME UP WITH?
Answer = No
This is the more fun and interesting one I could come up with. If I'd wanted hard-to-deny I'd have had the Cubone-Marowak species be into heirlooms so that the Cubone's mother's skull is one that belonged to her, not one that was scooped out from inside her head.
3) MAROWAK WAS ORIGINALLY GOING TO EVOLVE INTO KANGASKHAN
Answer = No
There's NO proof of this from developers. What IS true is that Kangaskhan was one of the first Pokémon to be programmed in and as a result Missingno can evolve into Kangaskhan. Missingno can ALSO evolve into Rhydon, however, and I hear no one claiming that's connected.
[link]
In all likelihood I think the developers would have said by now, at least in the Anime, if this was ever truly intended.
4) WHERE DID THAT CHARIZARD NEST STUFF COME FROM?
Answer = Okay, I made that up. I wanted a communal nest and Cubones as a frequent outcome because Cubones are by far the more common in comparison to Charmanders.
5) AM I COMPLETELY FLATTERED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE LIKE THIS THEORY?
Answer = Yes! Totally!
I thought I'd just get scolded for disagreeing with the oh-so-loved Kangaskhan one.
I guess at the very least I picked the right group to suggest this to, what's not Creepy Pasta-licious about a deformed, rejected and cannibalistic starter Pokémon?
Thank you very much for all the comments (including the curious/sceptical ones, feedback is feedback)!
...
And now back to the original description:
I really don't get the obsession over the Kangaskhan theory (see bottom right of pic for explanation on why). So here's an alternative!
Made worse by how I clearly can't draw Charmanders or Cubones! Heh...
Ah well. If I did a third theory it would be that Cubones start off as a bug Pokémon and that, upon hatching, their mums pass away (spider-style) and the young then eat the body. Yay!
Marrowak: Fits into this theory as some weirdos went on to decide Cubones were cute and encouraged these growth issues, eventually leading to a subspecies with a partial evolution (partial because getting a little taller hardly compares to growing horns/wings).
And if anyone has any reason to believe that baby-Kangaskhan-by-self sprite is OFFICIAL let me know?
...Blahblahblah. Whatever, enjoy.

good alt idea but the Kangaskhan has more backing by the game form yellow on they said somthing about wearing it mothers skull
yellow: Wears the skull of its deceased mother. Its cries echo inside the skull and come out as a sad melody.
silver: It always wears the skull of its dead mother, so no one has any idea what its hidden face looks like.
Kangaskhan babys are purple yes but that do to living in the mothers pouch both Kangaskhan and cubone are brown so after some time out of the pouch it would haft to grown up or die

I changed the mother bit to give the species more credibility. Was thinking about doing a follow up on that.
As for it having more "backing" they're different types of brown. Also, Cubones and Marowaks don't HAVE pouches. The spikes on their backs are different (Cubone has 2 protrusions, Kangaskhan has a small ridge that goes to the tail).

Ah, and to clarify, I don't believe my theory either, I just find the Kangaskhan one really unconvincing and wanted to offer an in-world alternative!
Also as a species it fails if every baby requires the death of it's mother (each generation would halve the population).
Thanks for your comment though, didn't mean to sound dismissive in the last reply!

Also, it specifically states that the skull Cubone wears is of its dead MOTHER. Not a random one from the Charizard graveyard.

Yes, but that's a really bad method for a SPECIES, isn't it?
It means every 1 baby would have to have 1 mother's skull regardless of gender, so each generation the population would HALF (!!!) and it would be extinct very, VERY, quickly.
Do maths please.

(Also, I wasn't specific on what skull it ends up with, it could still be that of its mother, I like the ambiguity. I could still do a part 2 where I have further research into the phenomenon. As it is I think I'm more likely to other alternative theories 'cause they're fun.)

Actually, the Kangaskahn one is true.
How do I know? Kangaskhan was originally supposed to be the evolved form of Marowak, but the idea was scrapped at the last minute, resulting in Missingno.
And a baby Charmander wouldn't have spinal deformities because the wing growth doesn't even occur until it evolves into Charizard.
And if the fire on it's tail didn't light, then the Charmander would die. Obviously.

Nice try. To quote the description:

[Et cetera, it's RIGHT THERE.]
And fire in an egg would make said egg explode. BOOM! No more Charmander embryo. Of course, it would go out before then due to the lack of oxygen. Physics please.

according to the fire red pokedex for charmander "From the time it is born, a flame burns at the tip of its tail. Its life would end if the flame were to go out."
so that makes your theory impossible

HareTrinity In reply to snowfire63 [2012-11-09 13:08:47 +0000 UTC]
I think something that starts within seconds after birth counts as "from when it's born" when speaking generally, especially if that something is most likely needed for survival. Certainly I would say newborn babies breathe air from the time they are born rather than "newborn babies don't breathe", which implies they don't need to do so to survive.
Still, good point. I was thinking of doing a follow-up to this to do it from another angle.

Actually, it was stated in an early interview. Besides, even if it wasn't, you have no way to prove that your theory is correct, duh. The only basis you have is the fact that Cubone's skull looks like Charizard's head. :eyeroll:
And 1) I never said that Charmander would have the fire on its tail while in the egg. I simply said that if the tail wasn't lit by the mother, the Charmander would die. Pay attention to what I said please.
2) It's a fricking game. Physics don't apply, obviously. I mean, a Kangaskhan egg hatches, it already has a baby in the pouch. How does that happen? Or, a Chansey egg hatches into a Chansey that already has an egg in it's pouch if it was bred without holding a special incense to make it hatch into Happiny. Your theory MIGHT be plausible in the anime, but still physics don't apply because anything can happen in anime. Therefore, your theory would only ever be even remotely correct would be in the real world, where physics DO apply. But everyone knows that Pokemon aren't real. So then, your theory is once again wrong.

HareTrinity In reply to CatAndDragons [2011-07-27 00:22:03 +0000 UTC]
Which interview, link please?
1) My implication was that the abandoned Charmanders tended to die, via deformities, cannibalism or general exposure.
2) Physics should apply somewhat. As it is, several animals in the real world ARE born pregnant, such as aphids and mites. Yes, all animals I can think of examples for are invertebrates but since Pokémon gen II we're expected to believe inter-species breeding is entirely possible so insect anatomy in vertebrates wouldn't be too otherworldly.
I never SAID my theory was correct, please refer to pic and/or description. I just think that the Kangaskhan theory is nonsense. As a spinoff species from a main one Cubones COULD exist but otherwise the MATHS does not cut it unless its mother has more than one skull to give.
2 parents can ONLY have 1 baby if said baby needs the mother's skull to exist. This means each generation, assuming a 100% survival rate, would HALF the population size.
Unless the species is producing a non-skull-wearing set of babies then it would die out VERY fast.
EXAMPLE:
1) Adam + Eve have a son, Kain
2) Kain is a Cubone, and wears his mum's skull (even if she survived this then no more kids for her as they'd need her skull and she's used it)
3) Kain mates with... No one. Bye-bye Cubones.
4) Jehovah/etc gives up on Pokémon and makes humans instead.
You need other species to make the Cubone species last, either producing them or breeding with them and producing fertile pedigree young (which I think was a highly disturbing bit of gen 2).
Geeze, I came back online tonight to apologise for being snippy before as I was in a hurry and found it frustrating that you seemed so happy to come onto my art and, without reading the previous comments, description or, apparently, the image's text, tell me why I am wrong without citing any sources.
It's just a FUN IDEA for a FANTASY WORLD.
Again, if you have a link for the developers confirming the Kangaskhan theory then I'm fascinated but as, is still in the description; I still think the Cubone's description about its skull's former owner was ultimately a last minute sob-story.

That's a theory and there's nothing from the developers to support it.
Mostly it seems to rely on how Kangaskhan was one of the first Pokémon programmed in and so Missingno can evolve into Kangaskhan. However, it can ALSO evolve into a Rhydon:

HareTrinity In reply to Syrvive [2011-07-21 04:55:06 +0000 UTC]
True, but in pure canon we wouldn't have much for Creepy Pasta, plus we would have no reason to be certain the Cubone/Marowak aren't a single species into heirlooms, which they pass down from mother to child.
After all, it never did say it was the mother's skull as in the one taken from inside her head so maybe it was just her skull as in a skull that belonged to her?
Originally I was going to go with a rare Charizard condition that resulted in 1 dead mother, but then realised that it would imply far more wild Charmanders than Cubones (if Cubones were just an occasional exception) so made the choice to go with a more imaginative setting that at least made seem a somewhat normal outcome.

Omega23 In reply to ??? [2011-07-20 20:41:41 +0000 UTC]
I'm pretty sure the theory arose because Kangaskhan was supposed to be the next evolution after Marowak, but at the last minute was simply made into its own non-evolutionary state. The M' glitch is supposed to be leftover data in the original games, which kind of helped push the theory along. Clearly it's not intended to be interpreted that way, or it would have been that way in the first place.
Though it does raise the question of how it was SUPPOSED to be interpreted. The whole process just raises so much confusion.

I'd go with a previous comment that, in all seriousness, the game designers probably just wanted to up the creepy/tragic atmosphere of Lavender Town and so what may have just been a random creepy look before became some bizarre Silence of the Lambs-meets-loss of a loved one combination!
What is strange is that Kangaskhan was one of the early Pokémon to be programmed in but features so little in the game? Ah well!

Parchife In reply to ??? [2011-07-20 20:19:39 +0000 UTC]
Well technically at one point Kangaskhan WAS supposed to be either the evolution for Cubone or Marowak, but at the last minute Pokemon company decided to cut that idea. They sort of..erm... spaced that gap and decided to make Kangaskhan it's own thing rather than a final evolution. This created the popular (hidden) glitch of "missing number" because the company needed something to space it out. (That is why if you ever evolve a missingno., it'll evolve into a Kangaskhan.)
I do really like this theory though (I wasn't going against yours, I was just explaining something). It's creative~ Good job. <3

I thought it was debatable as Missingno can also evolve into Rhyhorn and it just seems to be which ones were programmed in early?
Weird though, I always used to hear that Missingno was an abandoned Mew cheat... Ah well! I used the *99 cheat on my bike once.
Looked in my inventory, still the same... Sigh... So I went and put my bike in my storage box... Then I put the bike in my storage box again... ...And again... And, yeah, looked like it worked! Yay uselessness!

My theory about cubone's 'origin' is that the pokemon developers wanted to come up with a nice sad story about a pokemon for their game and didn't think of the specifics at all.
When it comes to silly fan theories, you changed the anatomy of charmander to fit more then you would have to change the anatomy of baby kangaskhan to fit. Speaking of kangaskhan, yes, it has a mother-- all the more reason for it to mourn the death.
So I'm not biting on this.
Not to mention, look at this thing [link] The nubs are going to the sides and it's much, much too bulky to be considered a charizard skull. Although it does look like a charizard skull if you draw it that way.
In pokemon canon, cubone is probably just it's own species and thoughts on it wearing the bones of it's mother just creepy folklore. Remember red and blue? Cuebone's mother that died was a Marowak.
blah blah blah

Phoebe69021 In reply to Moonblizzard [2015-09-16 00:50:46 +0000 UTC]
Also, this theory can still work. How? MUTATION TO GENERATIONS. Charmander which found a skull becomes a Cubone. The Cubone or Marowak finds another Cubone/Marowak to mate with. Since both pokemon have that mutation, 3/4 of it's children would be Cubones. Over time, Marowaks (or Cubones) evolved to have only Cubone children. The Marowak/Cubones may/may not have moved to Lavender Town naturally or been moved there by people. This would also explain the Cubones in the canon and anime. The Cubone in canon mother was a Marowak, however, the Marowak's far ancestors could have been mutated Charmanders.

Truly I figure its own species, yes (otherwise I think the games would have mentioned it by now); just wanted SOMETHING other than the Kangaskhan theory. Like it says on the pic, it's hardly ideal, just an alternative.
...Actually the skull looks maybe a little more like an Aerodactyl's but I don't think I could see a Cubone's stubby little arms becoming wings...
