Headcanon: Earth pony marriages are often accompanied by a 'clan ceremony', a secondary celebration that either welcomes a newcomer into an established clan or marks the founding of a new clan. This is often accompanied by name changes. If a new clan is being founded, gifts (for both the couple and guests) themed around the new clan are traditional. Banners, common in earth pony celebrations, normally depict cutie marks representative of the former clans as well as a large banner representing the new theme.

Here we see Tea Cup of the Afternoon Tea Clan and Carrot Top of the Top Clan founding the Cake clan, their names changing to Cup Cake and Carrot Cake, respectively. The purple pony's a young Jasmine Tea (Cup Cake's first cousin once removed). She's waiting patiently (along with all other guests presents) as Tip-Top (Carrot Cake's brother) continues to applaud long after everypony else has finished.

(I always thought 'Dr Horse' was a bad name for the incredibly up-beat doctor who appeared in Secret of My Excess, plus his subdued fur colour, lanky stature, and unruly, orange mane, kept stuffed under work headwear, has always made me think he's related to Mr Cake. Also, I know that, in canon, Cup Cake was 'Chiffron Swirl' before she got married, but I prefer my mine. And yes, Ponyville's resident Golden Harvest/Carrot Top was happy when this newcomer finally got hitched and changed his name!)

...Where did Mr Cake even go for the last few seasons? He and Mrs Cake were inseparable at first, and then he suddenly vanished from everything apart from brief background cameos!
