Description
One of my main purposes of making this was to try out my new stamp template . All things considered, I believe things worked out pretty well.As for the stamp - I'll admit that people can get a little picky when it comes to spelling. Normally, I don't make a big deal about it, but there are exceptions to that rule. The biggest one is in making stamps. If you're trying to get an important message across in your stamp, people are far less likely to take your point seriously if every other word is spelled incorrectly. It may not be fair or right, but it is a fact that cannot be avoided. (The same thing can be said about grammar; I have a similar stamp about that.)
I realize that for some people, English is not your first language. But the fact that you are here on DeviantArt posting in English, interacting in English, and commenting in English reveals that you have some knowledge of the English language, or at the very least - access to an English translator.
For those of you who do speak English as your primary language, remember what I've said. Of course, you aren't under any obligation to exercise proper spelling/grammar. But you will go much further if you do. If you're going to take all that time to make a stamp, take the extra two seconds to type the word into your word processor or Firefox to check the spelling.
Edit: I thought this stamp turned out very good, but I have to admit I had no idea it would become so popular. I really don't know how that happened, but thank you to everyone who has faved or commented.

I am more understanding of people who don't have English as their first language. English is complicated, the sentence structure and the vocabulary. We have so many words that sound the same or look the same but mean something completely different. If they're trying, it's all good by me; however, the people that are fluent in English, it is their first language, and they still choose '2 tipe like ths'...that drives me nuts.

Oh, as one who speaks it as a first language, I agree that English is a stupid language. There are so many exceptions to all of its rules that you can never tell when to do what. I'm more understanding of it, but I still think that if one really wants to make the point well, they can have an English-speaking friend check it out for you and suggest appropriate corrections. (Or just do it in their own language. I know dA is primarily an English-speaking site, but even if done in a native language, there are people who will read it and understand it.)

well, it can get hard for people who don't speak english at all, even with a translator ( actually, even more with a translator) since it is often not acurate and very confusing, but the effort is there and i guess it's ok, since they are learning.
but english speakers, come on, a whole life taking in the language, it's a shame if you can't spell right.

Yeah, I know translators aren't always the most reliable sources of language, but they do give people a starting place. Thanks.
(By the way, - in keeping with the spirit of my stamp - "accurate" has two c's, for future reference. )

I understand attacking chat-speak, but most people attack for honest spelling mistakes anymore. English is my first language but language and spelling have never been my strong points even when I try. I say if you're going to get pissy at someone online for spelling mistakes consider there are some things you aren't strong in and this may just be their weakness. Yeah, it's easy to check but if you're already a poor speller you usually miss mistakes and spellcheck doesn't always catch the problem.
Chat-speak and misspelling just to be funny get's annoying though, especially when it's done so much you can't understand the original message

In conversation, I tend to just let it roll. There's no need to get too picky about spelling when somebody is talking to you, as long as you can understand what they're saying. Like my artist comments say, I'm mainly looking at works of art on dA. Stamps, literature, etc. When somebody is taking the time to make a stamp or a piece of literature, they can at least take the time to make sure their message is written correctly. Sure, everyone makes honest mistakes. I realize that. But, unlike with comments, you can actually edit deviations. So if a mistake is made there, you can fix it and repost your deviation.
Thanks for the input

sorry if that came off as rude, i didn't mean it to be but rereading it it seems like it was
I know you included stamps, but i wasn't sure if that was just an example of the kinds of misspellings that bug you. I agree with you there when I write papers i always have someone reread it just to make sure. if someone is serious about a work they should do the same. i was mainly talking about comments xD It seems to be a very in thing to attack people who can't spell properly on comments.

Oh, no, not at all.
Stamps are an example, but I'm mainly talking about anything you want to be presentable (like papers and whatnot).

Really. I'm really only picky with spelling/grammar when I'm in an really irritable mood or it's one of my friends. My friends know better....
Anyway. I agree.

I agree! It's certainly not fair to be harsh on somebody who's misspelled a word, but it's good to know the difference between "jealous" and "jelouse." I mean, if there's an ugly red bar underneath the word you just wrote, I think it's worth taking five seconds to see where you've messed up.

Or "eachother". Each other is two words.
"Alright" is another one that I find a little annoying (though I should probably just get over it in this case). I realize everybody spells it that way, but that's technically wrong - it should be "all right".
Thanks for the input

"Alright" is technically an acceptable form, but the more formal version is "all right". I agree with you though. I prefer "all right". :)

HarmonicSonic In reply to Cyrean [2011-02-05 17:53:01 +0000 UTC]
Well, it depends on who you ask. Most dictionaries, including Merriam-Webser and American Heritage, note that in any formal, edited writing (like a stamp, or a piece of literature), "all right" is the appropriate form. But... now I'm getting picky. Sorry about that

Writing is not just for the 'elite'
I'm sick and tired of people in roleplays saying 'Only elite writers~' or 'Literate only'
It's much less snobbish to just say 'Write like a book, not casually' or 'no chatspeak'
Because the 'literates' I keep seeing use stupid thesaurus words to sound smarter when they write. It's getting ridiculous, such long and unnecessary descriptions for every day things.
"If you can say something, using fewer words, do it!"

HarmonicSonic In reply to daitoshi [2011-02-05 14:50:42 +0000 UTC]
I don't roleplay, so I can't speak to that, but I find your last paragraph intriguing. People often think that a thesaurus is just for looking up synonyms, but that is not the case. A thesaurus doesn't take context or word connotations into account. You can't just look up a word in the thesaurus and replace the original word with it. You have to know what the new word means, too.
"No chatspeak" certainly sounds a sight more tactful than "Literate only". Thanks for the input.

YES, SOMEONE SAID IT. ;w;
Now, I can understand being funny and misspelling on purpose or the occasional spelling error- but when you do it all the freaking time, you have no excuse. Especially when you have a comment box like this one.
On that note, it makes me happy that Firefox by default has a spell-checker in it.

HarmonicSonic In reply to AtsusaKaneytza [2011-02-04 23:54:28 +0000 UTC]
Exactly - it doesn't take that much extra effort to fix spelling mistakes, and if you're already spending the time to make a stamp, why not just go ahead and make sure it's all spelled correctly.

Spelling errors do sometimes drive me crazy... Certain ones more than others. Or just the text speak ones kinda bother me. Like "2" instead of "to". It's kinda like... Is it THAT hard to type T O? Oh well.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I try not to let it get to me when it's just conversation. It's when I see it on stamps, literature, whatever, that I really get annoyed.
