Description The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes.
-Sherlock Holmes

The immortal detective made this statement to his colleague, Dr. Watson, in the case entitled The Hound of the Baskervilles. Though this may have been said by a fictional character in a fictional story, truer words were never spoken. Sometimes, if we want to know something, we have to actually look for the information. We also have to be willing to apply common sense and critical thinking skills, or we may fall right upon the knowledge we're seeking and miss it completely.

This stamp being a Sherlock Holmes quote, I decided to give it a little bit of a steampunk-ish look (though I tried to be subtle about it). Feel free to use this stamp where the need arises.

The character of Sherlock Holmes is the property of the Estate of Dame Jean Conan Doyle. (©1924, 1926, 1927, 1930 by Arthur Conan Doyle).

If you don't want me to say thank you, then don't fave it. If you accuse me of not looking at your profile, I will turn right around and accuse you of not reading the artist comments.

Thanks as always to $zilla774 for use of his wonderful template.

<3 I love this quote - and it comes from my favorite Sherlock Holmes case to boot!

And I couldn't agree more - Sherlock Holmes may never have lived, however, his genius comes from the mind of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (who was very much a real person)! So, in a way, it came from...the real...world.

(That last sentance kind of got away from me.... )

Yes. Hound is among my favorites as well.

And yes, Holmes is himself fictional, but he is based on a real person named Dr. Joseph Bell. Arthur Conan Doyle said of him, "I thought of my old teacher Joe Bell, of his eagle face, of his curious ways, of his eerie trick of spotting details. If he were a detective he would surely reduce this fascinating unorganized business to something nearer to an exact science. I would try if I could to get this effect. It was surely possible in real life, so why should I not make it plausible in fiction?"

He captured that so well in his writing. It really makes Sherlock stand out, and makes him one of the greatest fictional characters, in my opinion.

The quote is saying that there are so many things in life that are right there in front of us, and we miss them completely.

I saw this stamp and read the quote and said to myself "That sounds like something Holmes would say." And naturally it from the greatest Holmes story ever!

I always try to observe, but turns out that I'm not an observant nature I tend to miss the most obvious things. I however am quite proud of myself if I ever deduce something correctly And it annoys me to no end when people don't even try to see and just live seeing anything but their own agendas. I know far too many of those.

Neatly animated stamp! I like the steampunk-ish style and the animation is smooth. Must fave!

Yep. Baskervilles is my favorite Holmes story, too.

And I think everyone, myself included, is guilty of missing obvious things from time to time. But I do think this would be a much better place if more people actually tried to observe.

Thanks for the fave, too.

Obvious things that I wouldn't mind if some people kept to themselves.
Kinda random, but I got a friend who thinks she always needs to spell every little thing out and it's a little irritating and degrading but I don't think she realizes it. >.>;;;

Great stamp though<3
I try to keep my eyes as wide open as possible.
Even then, I tend to miss things here and there.

Oh, and this reminds me of another stamp I saw, but I can't remember from who or when: "Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom."
Dunno why that came to mind.

HarmonicSonic In reply to CareBearKidd [2011-01-18 18:45:02 +0000 UTC]

True too. Sometimes people talk to others like they're less intelligent, and that is equally annoying. Maybe you should gently tell your friend that the spelling things out sounds condescending - if she doesn't realize it, maybe she just needs someone to tell her.

I've heard that quote about common sense before, too. Love it.
