This is coming along amazingly! I really like the way you've outlined the windows with that subtle texture change.

thanks! i'm trying to do the same on the secondary hull, but cylindrical mapping is a pain in the ass!!!

I did it once in school. it was really difficult. I cheated and broke my cylinder into four sections and textured each one separately to reduce the distortion around the edges of the texture map. But, I haven't dealt with textures since school.

since the mapping itself is cylindrical, i'm not sure that would work in my case, especially since i think MentalRay doesn't do layered textures.
my problem was that i was able to get the shield grid in a bump map using planar mapping (i find it's more precise and as long as the lines are thin enough, there isn't much distortion...and i get the lines EXACTLY where i want them) but the colour and reflective maps are cylindrical. this gives me the nice "hull made out of interlocking tiles" effect.
i do admit that i split the secondary hull into two pieces (along the long axis) but that so i can get the amount of detail i want. a full 360 degree map with the maxed 4096px size tends to blur finer elements...

I will have to go in and spruce up the bridge a bit.
And then it will be all the cabins in the saucer and engineering hulls.
