Description by placing a temp black background i can pull out the parts that need fixing

and as for that 'thing' they have in common.  it's food.  they both love food that is sweet and or spicy. from jams to peppers, and from cakes to sauces, sweet and spicy is what they found in common and how Nell was finally able to reach Gerrard as a person to a person and not a monster.

once he could see her as a person, Gerrard found that he could see her as a woman not unlike the women he had pursued earlier in his life.  the fact that she looked different was no longer a vile thing like human society demanded he think and he could see that she is in fact quite beautiful.

i do see a bit of irony though in the use of food, at least in my experience with the portrayal of Naga

thanks a bunch since Naga in traditional modern day fantasy settings tend to have them as the bad guys due to them being snakes i figured it would be a good "flip on it's head" story element. by making her completely non-human so that the symbolism of 'breaking down racial barriers' is at it's absolute.

Very good sense of the intent, friendly, alien.  And an utterly bewildered human.

I love the bit of story you put in this! It really touches home.
I laughed when I read that their common ground was food... They almost look like snake and mouse kind of deal there. He looks so uncomfortable it's hilarious! Keep up the good work!

I think that the relationship started with a random comment about an ingredient one of them was looking for. I can get that they first connected over food, but how did they start to connect over food?

hattonslayden In reply to Luckysweep [2014-04-10 12:54:28 +0000 UTC]

how they met is Gerrard fell out of a low flying airship and nearly died.  Nell found him and nursed him back to health.  she spent the next several months trying to make friends with him but no success until they found their love of food

Luckysweep In reply to hattonslayden [2014-04-10 19:37:52 +0000 UTC]

Okay, how did he fall out of an airship, how did she find him, and what was his first reaction to her?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hattonslayden In reply to Luckysweep [2014-04-11 00:09:44 +0000 UTC]

in this time period humans live in flying cities so they don't have to interact with the non-human peoples of the world.

Gerrard was a deck hand on one of the air ships and fell off due to being clumsy.

Nell happened upon him by chance and nursed him back to health because it is in her nature to and she was fascinated to see a human for the first time.

Gerrard was terrified of her because i grew up with stories of Naga eating their victims alive and all sorts of horrible things (which are all lies in this world)

Luckysweep In reply to hattonslayden [2014-04-11 02:08:51 +0000 UTC]

They have flying cities? Must be either steampunk or magic. And if they live there to avoid non-humans, they must be mislead by their leaders into thinking they are only safe in the air, and that all humans are in the air.

I have been on ships before, and there are a lot of things that are in place to keep somebody from falling off. The same was true for airships of old. The very fact he WAS able to fall off in a way that could be "innocently" explained as clumsiness seems strange. Even going so far as to suspect foul play.

"Happened upon him by chance." I can only imagine him falling out of the branches of a tree he landed in right onto her head. I'm guessing that Naga's usually only wear shirts, and she tore it up to help bandage his wounds and whatever bones that were broken in the fall. Which would explain why she is seen shirtless even when she isn't being sexy with Gerrard.

And the idea that Naga eat victims alive probably started as a rumor seeing how snakes eat their prey alive. I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to eat large amounts of food Whole, but I feel that a Naga eating somebody alive would be comparable to psychopath serial killers in the real world. They are extremely rare, and are usually pitiful.

The cube is food? I thought it was the apocarubics cube or somesuch.
I think it'd be a bit difficult to find things needing fixing with Gerards hair in a black backgrouund, but for everything else I agree. I think I see one thing though - her belly scales seem to take a very drastic turn upwards from this angle of view.
I notice (thanks to the original being in the 'more from hattonslayden window' to the right I must admit) that you've mirrored it horizintally. Why?
I may simply not have noticed it, but did she always have such slender spider-leg-fingers? I like them, they look weird, but are they intentional or not finished?

hattonslayden In reply to Scarouselle [2014-04-09 14:11:57 +0000 UTC]

no no i have not done the illustration that shows them daring a meal yet, i was just telling the story.

i have several illustrations planned that show the progression of their relationship.

i see what you mean, on the scales thanks on that.

i flip the image a lot because it is a trick to show if the image is 'skewed'

and yes her hands are intentionally that way but still unfinished

Scarouselle In reply to hattonslayden [2014-04-10 04:14:23 +0000 UTC]

It'll be interesting to get to know them.
That's a neat trick if it works. My images are always skewed, though to be fair I am using my hands and paper, so I can't change them.
