Description started some reworking after some critiques from multiple sites,  this will take some time though as the consensus is on small things.

a word of warning:  in my 20+ years of illustration i have found two types of 'critiquers'

the first is the one you want, the one that helps.  they point out things you missed and present it in such a way that make you want to take their advice.  these people are easy to spot because you will want to listen to them.

the second is the 'trap': this can be broken into two basic types.  the "blow hard", someone who says a lot but knows nothing about what they are talking about, and they do it in a 'i am superior to you' way.  simply by taking critiques from multiple unrelated sources can clear out the 'legitimacy' of the blow hard, especially if those other sources are from much better artist and directly contradict the "blow hard"
lastly is the Saboteur.  this is the most dangerous person to your growth as an illustrator.  they are usually and 'established' artist of moderate success but very insecure with their position (or just bullies for bullying sake).  they start with a critique that may be 'correct' but they do it in a bullying condescending way.  basically they use language that would get them punched by multiple people if they were not safe behind their computer. the first critique is to get control over you,  everything after that is to put you down the wrong path and make sure it is hard for you to recover.  if you try to ignore them without blocking them entirely they get their friends to come after you.

so in conclusion don't just listen to what they say but how they say it because intent is part of the critique.

You are one of the most inspirational and unique new wave of artists yet to open the world's minds about how people who are and look different are people no matter what they look like.

Is there an section we can go to, to read about The story behind the artwork or do you have a link you can post or message? Im a big fan of your art and was wondering if you wrote storys for them or had a partner that did that? Id love to read all about your characters in your drawings. I believe you have a firm ability to create and inspire writers and artists. Im looking forward to your future works and response.

...I'm sorry, this piece is excellent, but I can't get over how much Garret reminds me of Vaughn from Tales From The Borderlands. XD

I can't imagine Vaughn holding it together nearly as well in this situation, though. XD

I'm...oh, fuck it, I don't think you should leave the leaves shadows so detailed, because the higher something is the "fuzzier" its shadow becomes.

Great pic.
Though I still don't understand this. If Garret still doesn't trust Nell, why is he sitting on her tail?

hattonslayden In reply to Luckysweep [2014-06-18 16:12:44 +0000 UTC]

cause this is when he is all beat up, hence the bandages

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Luckysweep In reply to hattonslayden [2014-06-20 23:27:30 +0000 UTC]

But if he still mistrusts her, why doesn't he insist on sitting on something else?
Or did he already do that and Nell refused?

hattonslayden In reply to Luckysweep [2014-06-21 16:54:50 +0000 UTC]

more like he cannot move and is so scared that she will eat him (literally not phenetically) if he is rude

Luckysweep In reply to hattonslayden [2014-06-22 19:44:02 +0000 UTC]

If that's true, I can only imagine him eventually saying, "Stop it with the games! If you're going to eat me, just do it now and stop with the suspense!"

hattonslayden In reply to Luckysweep [2014-06-23 18:56:42 +0000 UTC]

then i can see her doing one of two things.

either she would not quite understand his meaning and go "oh why didn't you say you were hungry?! lets go home and get a snack."  i which case her love of good food and his love of good food help bring them to a common ground.

OR

she would take it COMPLETELY the wrong way, Blush furiously a bashfully say "Oh my!  What a thing to ask a lady to do who you just met.  and out here in the open too?  what if we are caught?"

Luckysweep In reply to hattonslayden [2014-06-24 03:37:04 +0000 UTC]

I actually see both happening.
It would first start out with him implying being eaten so she can say that first set.
Then Garret would snap back with my comment.

THEN she would take it the wrong way. With much hilarity as the adorkable misunderstanding ensues.

I had the second type comment on a poem of mine a few years ago. I just gave them a line like "thanks for the critique" and moved on even though it really did hurt me for a while and even worse that so many people clicked the "I agree with this critique" button.

the scales add some more depth to this; Before she just kinda looked like she had been squeezed out of a tube of paste. I think I might have said something like this way back when you first uploaded it but I can't remember. Suffice to say it's a lot better I think. not so much scales it looks silly, it's just right.

when you said "like she had been squeezed out of a tube of paste" i could not help but laugh "Colgate Naga"

and the scales where a challenge to figure out.

one crit - with such bright natural light, don't neglect the reddish shine through you can see in the border zones of the shadowed areas when sunlight suffuses human (particularly caucasoid) skin.
I've got a pic somewhere around here showing what I mean. hold one moment
