Description
Have you ever heard the tale of Darth Eraditus the wise? It's not a story the samurai would tell you. 🥴Finally, FINALLY finished this one. It's my half of an art trade with my pal . I drew his character Eraditus facing off against his other character the Plague Samurai. He only asked me to draw one of them, but since it was taking so long I decided to do both. Thank you time, very cool. I hope this was worth the wait.
This particular piece was cursed in terms of development. The sketch wouldn't turn out the way I wanted, school kept getting in the way of me working on it, then I had to move back in to my house. Seemed like something would always get in the way of me finishing it, but here it is. I'm not the best when it comes to mechas, so this was a nice challenge. They're much easier to draw when you do the values first, and then refine them later.
The plague samurai dude wasn't colored originally, so I just chose some that would make a nice contrast with the other guy. Creative licence at work there 🥴👌
Also, I feel like I'm getting a better grasp on how colors work. What do you guys think?
Ok, now I've gotta draw my new id (I haven't even started it LOL) And as always, help me out you guys. See something that could be improved? Tell me!

Thank you! I was really trying to experiment with colors on this one. I think I'm starting to get the hang of color theory now, so expect more to come

Wow! This is an epic clash of swords! Love those armor details. The colors you used are amazing, red and green is a strong contrast but you made them blend with harmony. The light effects are amazing, I love how you put the subtle glow on the armor, and the reflection of the green fire/energy on the sword.
The only thing that didn’t work out for me is that the background is as strong as the foreground.
I would suggest using a softer brush on the background, this would emphasize and put the viewer’s focus on the main characters . Also, one good trick is to put a bit of a darker line between them or use some highlights to separate them. Or you can also blur the background a bit, just like this:
Sorry for editing your artwork without your permission.

Thanks again! I really like the way the armor came out myself, since it's usually so tedious to do with lineart. But if you map out the values first, then it's not hard at all! I was definitely going for that red and green kind of contrast, glad you noticed! And yep, it's always the small details you've gotta pay attention to the most. They're really like the icing on the cake when it comes to art.
Oh yeah, thank ♂you ♂sir♂ for the critique! I love whenever I get a critique, really feels like people are paying attention to what I post! I definitely agree with you on the blur aspect. How'd you get that effect? I must know!
I actually tried to emphasize the main characters by making them more saturated than the background characters, but yeah, I could also use contrast in other ways as well. That blur technique really emphasizes it! Makes it go from a 9 to a 10. I should probably start using other brushes too (but I really love the flat brush xD)
And yeah, don't worry about editing my art or whatever! That's what all good teachers do after all

I just selected the background via selection tool and blurred it.
The one thing that paint tool Sai doesn’t have is the filters. Back then, I used to have another free art software like GIMP or Photoshop Express just to add effects. But you can also do this in Sai without any use of another software. Just select the areas (via freeform selection tool) or the layer that you want to blur, choose the blur brush, set the opacity to maybe 5 to 10% (you don’t want to blur too much or the details will be a waste), choose the biggest size brush, scrub it in, and voila, now you have a blur effect!

Oh, wow! How have I not thought of that?? Of course I'd use the blur tool. It's in the name
But thanks for the extra tips as well! I wouldn't have known about the opacity thing. I think I'll use this one on the next one I'm doing, since it's also got two central figures

Oh yeah, I just learned what this effect is called! It's called depth of field. Pretty cool!

What stands out the strongest in this piece is the action pose whereby they are striking their swords. It is clear the character that has more red color is on the offense and the greenish character is putting up a strong defense. The sword spark is what brings everything to a focal point. So great job portraying animation without having to use actual animation frames. The two characters in the background are interesting, they feel like referees cheering on their respective champions! Regarding the colors, I think the character clad in black and red is more striking because of sharper contrast. The glowing green, snakelike effect around the other character's sword is also a nice touch because it stands out on its own compared to the other varying shades of green. I think the other green shades are good, but the fact that three of the characters have some green makes it a little hard to distinguish these other green shades i.e. they tend to blend together (which may be an intended effect). The samurai helmet on the black and red character is very recognizable, so you have nailed the samurai look - also I think I see you are applying that technique of keeping the brush shades soft and allowing the user to interpret the rest via imagination - kudos

Thanks for the detailed comment! That's pretty cool that it animates itself in a way- maybe I'll try some more poses like this one! Yeah, the two dudes in the back being more muted color wise is intentional, it was supposed to bring the viewers attention towards the two guys in the middle. Though I think I should've added something else in addition to that as well, because it makes the picture a little confusing. But that's why I practice xD
That less is more technique is awesome! The one thing I really disliked about doing lineart was that I had to had to draw absolutely everything in a picture, regardless of how important it was. It was really tedious and time consuming. But this method is great, since I can detail the parts I like and simplify the areas that are less important.

You are welcome! Yeah, maybe different color shades for the two spectator dudes would have helped separate them a bit more from the two main characters. I agree clean lineart is very time consuming - I need to practice more on this illusion style myself, it is quite efficient and effective.

I can help with that! I posted these before, but these two video series got me into painting digitally:

i loved it! The coloring is outstanding, as always :3 and as you requested a critique, I would say... I think the red samurai could have a better pose for him, more dynamic, with more movement. For example, he could be holding his sword with both hand, in a more samurai way, rotating a little his torso to give more power to the attack :3
Anyway it is great and I love it :3

Oh yeah! ♂Thank♂ you♂ sir♂! Indeed, trying to make the samurai guy dynamic looking was a challenge for me. But now that you mention that, I'll make sure to do that next time!

Dude hot diggity damn. I'm speechless. This is gorgeous! I mean nevermind they are technically supposed to be on the same side (yeah I forgot to explain that) but HOT DAMN! The expressiveness, the fumes of toxins from Eraditus, the expressiveness of Takeno is all stunning! Thanks alot for working with me for this!
(P.S. I think it's partially my fault you had many problems. I should explain that Eraditus isn't a robot, but dudes in VERY bulky armor. Also they kinda have the same crest as seen on Takeno's helmet and Eraditus' soldier's shields etc.)

Sweet, glad you like it! I actually realized that they were supposed to be on the same side when I was writing the description for this, because of the similarity of their names lol. Maybe it's an honor battle or something. Sorry again that it took me so long, I wasn't slacking I swear 🥴

No issues, I understand the whole studying plight. I'm going through the same at the moment. I was thinking it's perhaps the first time they met. After all both are from radically different upbringings.
