Description
This was my first (and so far only) attempt to paint Set. It's pretty small, being only 11x14. Acrylic on illustration board. I wanted to work on how I would paint him on a big painting. I rather like the way he turned out but I'm not sure I'll stick with this or not. No one can agree on what animal Set was based on or even if the animal existed or not. I've never really agreed with any of the arguments and examing the non morphic depictions don't help! So, I just worked with various depictions of him and came up with this. I think he looks rather dragony which is cool but not exactly an animal of choice
I might do another study to see if I can come up with something I like better but this one has mellowed nicely on me and I might stick with it.

That's a compliment actually. Set is said to be a really sexually attractive Deity in Egyptian mytho. So you nailed that part of him right.

I recall that Set is often invoked for a spell to keep your cock erect during sex. There's no specific myth that call him sexy but he is invoked for sex.

Also in my fan story about him, Eris (the greek goddess of chaos) and a human girl they end up raising, he possesses two sets (ha pun) of genitals (being intersex as a result of a "malfunction" when switching genders).

He is, he was portrayed with the head of an ass. According to Wikipedia.

Given that his hieroglyph is canid in pre-unification Egypt, my best guess would be a fennec or a jackal. The ass comparison's came later after he was demonized.

Yeah, around the Late Intermediate Periods they demonized him in an effort to find a god to put the blame on for their troubles and make a scapegoat out of.Β

Very pretty this is. The musculature is beautiful, I really wanna touch his stomach for some reason. I absolutely love the pose, very confident, which I think fits him. I also like that he is standing in front of a picture of himself.
Only thing that really seems strange to me is that his hair isn't red. However I read that his hair color was changed later somwhere in a previous comment so that could expalin it. It's just strange, like Loki without the red hair.

This is a really great picture of set... I like it. I think that set was a jackal/donkey, but that's just my opinion. I love the wall behind him with pictures of set, and I love the sly look in his face.

Mmmm... I really like this. I'd like to see (sorry to be an elitist) a re-color maybe? His original depiction in the myths is with white/silver skin and red hair. He eventually was assimilated with the other gods as having lapis/blue hair and I guess the black came from his nature... still yet, great art.

I think as far as technicallities go, you kinda screwed Set up- in all the depictions I've seen of him, he's wearing something on his chest, too... and he has the body of a human, and is carrying an Ank, not a sythe.
But, then again, that's what artistic lisence is about...

Well, it would be kind of boring if I always depicted him one way, wouldn't it? In various classic paintings of Set he is some times protrayed as all black or all red. He is also shown with a Was staff on occasion and not always with a key of life. The chest covering is not always shown either. The culture thrived for over four thousand years and in that time the interpetations of all the Gods varied to a certain extent. Glad you like the pic

Nicely drawn! ^-^ The colors made me think of anubis when I saw the thumbnails, though... Blue is such a soothing color... Seems a little weird on a Warrior. The gold eye makeup seems odd too, since the 'eye of Horus' makeup would seem inapropriate on an enemy of horus... or maybe this is a diferent eye makeup design? (I've seen a couple variations of such makeup popping up and don't know much about that.) And it's another thing that makes this look a tad bit like Anubis.
Also, I know you like to incorporate actual objects that are asociated with them.... I'd recomend looking up 'staff of Set'....
