Description This was my first (and so far only) attempt to paint Set. It's pretty small, being only 11x14. Acrylic on illustration board. I wanted to work on how I would paint him on a big painting. I rather like the way he turned out but I'm not sure I'll stick with this or not. No one can agree on what animal Set was based on or even if the animal existed or not. I've never really agreed with any of the arguments and examing the non morphic depictions don't help! So, I just worked with various depictions of him and came up with this. I think he looks rather dragony which is cool but not exactly an animal of choice I might do another study to see if I can come up with something I like better but this one has mellowed nicely on me and I might stick with it.

Nice work, it'll be nice to see on the wall. You should have a print account, I'm sure many people like your work. It's great really.

Very impressive. *pokes tummy* He's so muscular... I love the shining effect you captured on the gold, too.

It's a pretty good depiction, although the misculature of his torso seems slightly off - but maybe that's just my uneducated eye
I don't think his head has ever really been identified because according to most infomation I have read on him they all state his head is of an unknown animal. However, he sometimes takes on the form of a crocodile or is represented as a hippopotamus or a black pig - but then again, pigs were taboo in the cult of Set. Hope that sort of helped

It definately works for me.
Looks terrific . . . although from some descriptions I've read about Set he's supposed to have red hair

I've never heard of Seth being foreign, or being black skinned (oh dear, comments like this usually lead to fierce race debates *prays this thread won't become one*) that's new to me. I have a friend who's an Egyptologist, I'll ask him for his opinion.

Yup that is one of the things he's associated with. Since Set is original a desert God from the Eastern desert/Arabian penninsular he wasn't originally Egyptian (one of the reasons he got his rather fearsome reputation). At any rate, in most paintings he's portayed with black skin and that's the way I choose to paint him. Hmm wonder what he'd look like as a nice deep, blood red.

I've heard that about Set also

A deep, blood-red Set might be very interesting.

I always thought he was based around the crocodile, but that's just me. He looks a bit like Anibus here, but I still like it. Wonderful work

Nope no crocodile, though I can see where you'd get that. The main croc god is the wonderful Sobek and when draw or carved he's quite recognizable as such. Anubis and Set look a lot like each other in many ways with the black skin and large ears, long snout. I bet they hate getting mistaken for each other

il like all your drawings but this one seems a bit uncomforteble, i mean his left arm is in abit odd position, but anyway i love to see you more painting of egypitian god, espesialy i would like to see Hathor the cow headed goddess of love and vertilitie and counter part of her self, Sechmet as a lion headed. but you know that already so nice done

An ass in certainly one of the possible animals. The oddest I've seen discussed is the Giant Anteater!! But if you look at him in his non morphic form he's a deciedly canine like animal with a funky tail. So while you can make a good argument for wild ass, I can't go with it

It has generally just come to be known as the 'set' animal . Even though Set is actually the Greek name for him lol. The Egyptian name is Sutekh.

Very nice work all the same
