Biography
Johann Schmidt was transformed by Adolf Hitler in the years prior to World War II into the perfect Nazi super-agent, a physical and mental paragon. As the Red Skull, Schmidt and his legions of minions and impersonators fought Captain America and Bucky Barnes, but he was ultimately trapped in his bunker under a pile of rubble in a clash with the former and left to die. However, the rubble shattered a container for an experimental suspended animation gas, which rendered him unconscious and unaging for decades. One day, HYDRA discovered the Skull and revived him in more modern times to be the organization's own super-agent to use against the likes of the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the similarly revived Captain America. As one of Hydra's leading authorities, the Red Skull remains Captain America's most implacable foe.
