Rather than the handle being in line (180°) with the back edge of the blade, it is canted some 25° off it at 155°. I just wondered if there is anything to be gained from doing this in terms of chopping power etc.?

Oh I see. I believe there is! The traditional choppers like khukri and other similar are also bent a bit like that and they weren't designed for the looks, but were born to be the most useful as they can. So it must be the product of empiric evolution, so to say
