Invader Zim was a show that I have always wanted to watch, I never had the chance until I bought the complete series around 2017, I have now watched every episode at least 3 times, and since the movie came out, why not make a scorecard of it?

Invader Zim is a show about a space invader trying to conquer earth and everyone on earth is too ignorant to realize except for Dib. As you can tell, this show didn’t last long and that's because it was VERY expensive to make so they had to cancel it midway through season 2. We didn’t get any more content until the movie in 2019 and the comics that ran from 2015-2021. I collected every volume and they are great stuff. Feels like the show but in comic form.

There’s a reason why I consider season 1 to be one of my favorite seasons of all time. The show manages to wow me every time I revisit it. Invader Zim can be so dark and disturbing that it's fascinating really. A lot of the creepy stuff comes from Zim and his plans to take over the earth which leads to episodes like Zim harvesting organs and attempting to KILL Dib. Even in episodes that are more comedy based can still have something that makes you want to do a retake. The 2nd episode, Bestest Friend has a really basic premise where Zim wants a best friend. But the things he does to this kid is HORRIFIC. Zim RIPS the kid's eyes out and makes him a robot, but this doesn't even last that long because he ends up DYING at the end and then a cloud of smoke brightens and shows us Gir stirring a mix of cake batter singing the doom song very slowly. The ending is dark, random, and funny which is what a lot of the show is really like.

The humor in this show is really great, yes there are some jokes that involve loud screaming and really dumb gags but it still works in this show. This is because the characters in this show were already amusing to begin with, the constant bickering from Dib and Zim isn't annoying in the slightest because it never goes on for too long and makes the payoff HUGE. The show also has excellent pacing and it only slows down if it wants to use anti humor and troll the audience, which I don't mind at all.

The animation here is at nickelodeon's best. There's a reason why it was so expensive. The show looks fantastic! The artstyle is so cool and unique, like the wavy tongues and square teeth. Everything is so expressive and the animation is never poor. Even when it's bleak and gross looking it still fits and not out of place with the tone of the show. The scenery, shading, backgrounds, everything looks pitch perfect. Even the CGI isn't that bad, especially for an early 2000s show.

The characters in this show are amazing. Zim is a goofball that has yet to take over the world, but he can still be really smart. It's just that his plans are slightly off and also there's Dib who will try to foil it. Zim is technically a "bad guy" but he is entertaining enough for him to be someone everyone would root for. That's not saying that Dib isn't something you would root for either, his passion in saving the world is really cool and for a short series Dib has a lot of episodes focusing on him which makes him more interesting of a character. Gir is Zim's companion and was created at the last second, so he can malfunction really easily. He can go from being lovable and the fun comic relief character to being really destructive and chaotic. Gir's actions are so unpredictable and you never know what to expect from him, making him be the funniest character on the show. Last main character I'll talk about is Dib's younger sister, Gaz. Gaz is antisocial and short tempered. Gaz is mostly seen playing video games and nothing else unless she wants to amuse herself and see his brother try to save the world. Funny enough, Gameslave 2 is one of the most suspenseful episodes and Zim has nothing to do with it, Gaz is the threat in here and my god she was very menacing. This was all over a video game, but whenever someone angers Gaz she WILL get revenge…. even if it will take a dark turn in events.

Overall this show is AMAZING and a very high one at that. I can gush about this show on and on and I can never get tired of invader zim. Everything is right for this series and even the weaker episodes of the show are still humorous and awesome. Like, Season 2 is a very slight downgrade, very slight though because its still awesome. But the middle of the season was on the weaker side of this series and honestly, season 2 just needed to be complete and much longer. It would have been most likely on par with season 1 if it did. But this is still my favorite show of all time.
