Description
To Prof Ian Halsey, Brown UnivDear Sir,
I just wanted to take a moment to write, and acknowledge the receipt of your mysterious boxed object. Normally as you know, we wouldn't bother with this sort of thing, as a simple wooden jewel box less than a century old hardly warants study. But the exceedingly odd tale behind its aquisition has quite captured the imaginations of my collegues in the department who share our particular branch of study.
Sadly like you, we've found ourselves baffled by our odd inability to open the thing, despite its obvious lid and simple locking clip. Even detaching the hinges has brought no joy. Its as if its held closed by some unknown force.
We've finally conceded defeat for fear of damaging the relic in our efforts, which you've requested that we avoid.
Yes, I quite agree that the container is hollow, and there is definately some object inside, the weight and sensation of something rattling about softly when shaken is quite obvious, and hint at some soft, fist sized object.
With your permission, we'd like to send the box by special courier to Harvard to make use of their Radiography equipment for an internal examination. And if warrented, employ drill and a sampling device to discretely probe within the wooden barrier. We will of course take no action until we recieve your reply and permission.
Naturally all data revealed about this singularly curious object will be forwarded, should any prove to be of scientific intrest.
Yours faithfully,
Prof Rayford Curwin, Dept of Antiquities, Miskatonic University

Go for it! I'd love to see what you'd come up with.
I actually just finished a new and improved version of this piece. I'll be posting pics in the next day or two once I can get outside into some decent lighting.

what fun, I love the text almost as much as the sculpture. You should put them together in some kind of fake document or scientific journal

Many thanks for the kind words. Actually I went in and cleaned up the text just a bit. I really love creations that have a back story to go with them. Makes the piece seem more interesting. Probably a leftover from my scale modelling days.
I actually had planned to write up a letter to go with the piece to put in a convention art show. but I would up gettign an offer fro it and just didn't have to the time.

Hum, if I had such a box, I would wonder about getting a shotgun loaded with elder signs shells.
You did a really nice job, you are gifted .
