Description
This is my reference sheet for "Jo Ayara." She is one of the new fan-characters that is going to appear in "Maho Shoujo Rika Magika," a Maho Shoujo Madoka Magika-based project of mine, and she is also one of the central characters too, though not as important as Rika Isoni is in it. I styled it in the same manner as similar reference sheets I've seen for this. This should give you a good idea on how Jo is supposed to look. This was such a pain for me to draw, but it was worth it in the end. I love how cute she looks, and I really put a lot of detail into her. Well here's the description on her. Take time to read the description if you want to know about her more.
Jo Ayara is a 15-year old girl, and also one of the so-called, Maho Shoujos. Jo Ayara is also somewhat of a "Veteran" Maho Shoujo who is vastly different from most of the others. She made a contract with Kyubey long ago, and later on, she makes friends with Rika Isoni and decides to take her along with her on her spellbound adventures to slay the various Witches.
Jo is very optimistic, playful, and very interested in magic. As you can see, In her "powered up" form, she wears a light-gray Maid Outfit, and black shoes with sharp points on the end used for delivering kicks that impale. Although the Maid Outfit is mostly just because it looks extremely super cute and cuddly, I was also told that it is symbolic for her too. Since she acts much like a Zealot to Kyubey's cause, she can now in ways be considered like Kyubey's personal humble servant, and the Maid Outfit could symbolize that too.
Jo has a number of things that makes her very different from the other Shoujos. The first thing is that she is actually happy that she made a Contract. Most of the other Shoujos think of the Contract as a curse, but Jo finds it to be a gift instead. She does not care so much about the free wish that comes with the contract, but is happy for more than just that. She is happy about it because making the contract gave her amazing special powers, and now she cannot be killed by conventional means (only destroying her Soul Gem will kill her now). Plus she loves the thrill and adventure involved when she has to go into the various Witch Barriers and confront the various Evil Witches herself. It's so exciting to her and thrilling to be involved in that kind of thing. Finally, she thinks that Kyubey's motives to essentially preserve usable emotional energy is a just cause, and she wishes to help him with that. After all, someone's gotta do it, so she'll certainly do it. Not only that, but she also has a bunch of friends now, who are the other Maho Shoujo's, and she likes that.
Jo is very much aware of the fact that the Witches are former Maho Shoujos, but most of the time this does not deter her much. To Jo, slaying a Witch is essentially like slaying someone who had been bitten by a werewolf or zombie, and had turned into one. They've become hideous monstrous beings, and there's nothing you can do to save them now, you can only put them out of their misery before they terrorize others. Also, many of the Witches she fights, she most times assumes that they were previously a Maho Shoujo whom she never knew well or met, and its a lot easier for her because of that. However, if she were aware that a certain Witch was actually someone whom she knew rather well, it would actually be a lot harder on her emotionally, and she would most likely not want to do it if that were the case.
Jo is best friends with Rika Isoni, and she also is very good friends with Mami Tomoe. She also sort of likes Kyouko Sakura, but she hasn't known Kyouko as long. She likes Sayaka Miki, but she often times teases around with Sayaka, sometimes in ways that would annoy her, and the two are not total friends because of that. As for Madoka and Homura, she barely has even met Homura, and she hasn't even met Madoka at all.
Jo almost acts like a Zealot to Kyubey's cause. She believes that making a contract isn't totally bad, and to her, the good parts outweigh the bad parts. After all ,you even get a free wish, alongside these special powers and everything. She is aware that she might become a Witch herself, but that isn't too big of a problem for her. After all, all she has to do to avoid becoming a Witch is just "be happy" and not fall into despair, and this rather easy for her because she is very optimistic and playful and kind.
She is also a very respectful person and always lets others decide for themselves and never really tries to "force" them into doing something they don't want to do. After all, she is aware that not everyone has the same feelings about something, and she usually does take this into account with others. She does not reveal the full details of the contract to others though, as for she does not know if they can handle it and doesn't want them to fall into despair. So Jo does her best to not reveal that part, for to her, it's one of those things that her friends are better off not knowing, for their own good.
Jo also tries to persuade other girls into making a contract with Kyubey many times, although she doesn't pressure them into doing it, like Kyubey himself does. However, she has gotten quite a few girls to become Maho Shoujos too.
Unfortunately for Jo, her happy attitude won't last her forever, and soon she may pay dearly for that.
Click these links for more on Jo Ayara. I had to divide the reference sheet into 3 sheets, for certain reasons.
These two are more on her, and some of Jo's special abilities.

I don't think Yuki would go as far as practicing disassembling herself like Jo does, but as I said she would understand and respect that ability. She would indeed be uncomfortable with brackets in her own body, even if she knows it's a necessity when using that skill. In short, she would not use that ability on purpose like Jo does, but she would have no problem helping Jo perfect it.
Your idea for Himiko made me smile. XD I can't help but find it funny, though I know that kind of humiliation would make Himiko want to kill Jo even more. But it's a good scene!

Oh I see. Yeah, Jo is one of those Maho Shoujo who's survived for a long while, like Mami, Kyouko, and Homura had. She's had a lot of time to improve, but she could always do better.
And Jo would never get into a situation like Murasaki did. Since she's does a whole lot with the Soul Gem Semi-Immortality, she knows how much of a priority her Soul Gem is. She never lets anyone touch her gem or mess with it, unless it were a dire situation, like say someone had to pull it off in order to save her life. Otherwise, she doesn't let anyone but herself touch it, for if something were to happen to that gem, she will die. Its a total priority for Jo.
And yes, that scene with Himico would be rather funny. Although Jo almost never holds back when taking down a Witch (except if that Witch were someone she knew before), she's still cute and respectful. Unless the situation with Himico got Really Really Bad, she'd probably show some mercy. Considering how Himico also helps fight witches and puts that above her rivalry, she would have some sympathy for her, and maybe even save her if she were to be in danger of being killed by a Witch, although I doubt Himico would do the same for her then, would she?
Jo would probably not just blow out Himico's Soul Gem and kill her, unless she really really deserved it. Instead, she'd take advantage of how Himico finds being split apart to be humiliating, and do that to her, also letting her escape.
I could also picture something else funny happening to Himico. Like while she's still trying to find her head, suddenly a bird would land on her face and start pecking at her, and she'd be like "Gah, cut that out, stop ruining my beautiful face, unngh!" or something like that.
Another idea for how a fight with Himico vs Jo and her friends would turn out in the end I had, though I'm not sure, maybe this would be a little extreme. At the end, Jo would then throw her staff and make it impale Himico through the chest and pin her down to the ground. Unable to escape, Himico would be worried about what would happen. Then Jo would walk over, but show some sympathy. She'd then remove Himico's Soul Gem and set it aside, then proceed to pull out her staff, and then quickly dice up Himico into over 100 timy little bits (though not too many). She'd then proceed to gather up all the little pieces of Himico and scatter them all over the place, leaving her Gem somewhere safe, and then she'd say something like "Have fun pulling yourself back together, Humpty-Dumpty," followed by her and her friends getting away.
I got the idea for that off of this comic here. --> [link]
It would be a much more funny scene and more humiliating of a defeat for her. Almost as funny as the scene where Kyubey got blown full of holes by Homura (which wasn't bloody or anything). Though I dunno if this would be too much though.
But this would force Himico to either reassemble her body bit by bit, or just give up and wait for her Soul Gem to restore her back to normal. Either way, it would then take hours, or even a few days, before poor little Himico is back in one piece. Perhaps something else funny would happen too, like maybe a cat or some other animal picks of a part of her and runs off with it, or she ends up getting caught and swept up by a streetsweeper, even more embarrassing!
Either way, Himico would probably be extremely pissed off at her during their next fight. She wouldn't take that sort of defeat so lightly from what I've seen.

I must agree that the scenario you imagined where Himiko gets chopped into 100 pieces is a little extreme, but if it was to make up for something horrible Himiko did it could be fitting. I drew a scene I thought of today involving Jo and Himiko, and it's actually the kind of event that could lead to that outcome. I'll make sure to scan it tonight! (^^)

Wow, cool! I can't wait to see it.
You can see that I'm a huge fan of the Maho Shoujo's ability to withstand normally-fatal wounds, thanks to their Soul Gems, and I like it a lot. However, I sometimes wonder if I'm taking it too far or not, and I sometimes question what would be overdoing it or not.
Many times I try to avoid it by focusing more on Witch fights, and they lose their Semi-Immortality once they become a Witch, in exchange for becoming more monstrous and mighty. But when its Maho Shoujo vs Maho Shoujo, I sometimes start thinking over the top about what would happen in a fight against two of them who can survive stuff like this. In fact, once in Rika Magika, a similar event happens when they are having a sparring match (you know, a practice play-fight to test each other's skills), but not really anywhere else. Part of the main concept behind Jo too.
By the way, could you please leave some comments on my stuff for Lydia The Night Witch? You told me that you find her interesting too, but I've yet to hear your opinions on her, and her minions, Signa and Terrance, and other stuff such as her Grief Seed. When you can, could you please do that on some of them?

Wow, thanks for all the insight. I see from your comment that you looked at the other reference sheets of Jo Ayara too. I wasn't aware about these traits and features about Jo that I forgot to mention and all. But yes, Jo is a very unique and interesting Maho Shoujo, and very important, aside from Rika herself.
Well I'm glad you find her to be cute. Little cuteys in maid outfits are way too adorable and cuddly. And also about Jo Ayara's Soul Gem, just so you know. Not all Soul Gems match their owner's color scheme. Like for instance, Homura was mostly black, but her Soul Gem was purple. Same goes for Jo, she's mostly gray, but her's is red. Her mostly gray color scheme also made her turn out way more cuter and lovable overall too.
And notice the location of her Soul Gem. Her's attaches onto her back, which is a more unique location than most of the others. In a way, I think that keeps it safer than others, like for instance, its not wide-out visible on her chest, like it is for Murasaki. However, her's is still on the area that usually is her blind-spot, and she has to watch for attacks from behind quite a bit. I didn't want her to be overpowered you know, and a lot of people told me that it really makes her less overpowered with her Soul Gem being on her blind-spot.
Also a little about her backstory. I recently thought this up, but didn't have this originally. It explains more about her.
Before Jo Ayara made a contract, she was a girl who was interested in magic, and read lots of magic-based books and novels, attended those Magic Trick Shows frequently, and more, but wished she could have it for real. When Kyubey found Jo and she made a contract, it was everything she could ever ask for. Now she can truly experience actual magical adventures, use supernatural powers, face against powerful Witches, all to help others, and help Kyubey sustain the Universe! This is why she enjoys it so much and is so playful and enjoys the contract, for its like a dream come true to be involved in such magical things herself, and do good from it too. She learned about the Witch transformation a bit early on, but it's not much for her. She felt that as long as she stays happy, despair won't overtake her and it won't happen, and that's easy for her most of the time. She also makes sure that her teammates stay happy as best as she can.
Oh and by the way, sort of explaining her one skill. Before she made a contract, one of Jo Ayara's favorite Magic Tricks is that one where the Magician puts you in a box and saws you in half (you know that trick)? Now, since she can't die normally, thanks to her Soul Gem, she can now perform tricks like that without faking it, or even needing a saw or a box. Part of why she likes it a ton.
Next, about her and the fact that she knows about the Witch Transformation.
As said before, Jo is sort of a Zealot to Kyubey, but she's also very optimistic, playful, and respectful. Jo never reveals how the Witches are former Maho Shoujos, because she's afraid that they might not be able to handle the truth. After all, they become a Witch as soon as despair overtakes them, so as long as they don't lose hope and stay mostly happy, they can avoid it. She basically hides this secret, for its better off that they don't know, for their own good. She wants to help Kyubey in his goal to preserve the Universe and keep it from collapsing on itself, and she feels that if she keeps herself and her friends from losing hope, they can stay going on and help Kyubey, without becoming Witches themselves.
At times in my series, Maho Shoujo Rika Magika, she tries to comfort her other Maho Shoujo friends when they start to look unhappy or depressed. A few times they then ask "why are you suddenly so concerned with how I feel?" Jo then just tells them "I'm your friend, of course I care about you and your feelings," but in truth, she is more concerned with them to not become a Witch (which also shows she cares too though).
I don't think Jo would ever tell Saki that, for she doubts she could handle it. She'd probably go along and have fun and adventures fighting Witches with her. I bet Saki and her would get along well, but Amane would probably try to stop them both. Amane would perhaps try to get Jo to confess what she knows, but Jo would be resistant to doing so, because she doesn't want them to become depressed from knowing this, which would trigger the Witch Transformation.
Though I wonder how Saki could handle seeing the way Jo pops on and off her body parts? She tends to do that a lot, both in and out of battle, and I dunno how Saki would take seeing that. In my series, Rika Magika, most of the other Maho Shoujos, and Rika Isoni too, are actually mostly okay with it (perhaps since she's their friend, and they've seen it enough). Although Sayaka still gets uneasy when she does it, and can get startled by it too. The rest, maybe a little, but not so much, and Rika actually finds it to be very interesting and cool, not very scary though.
Most of the time, fighting Witches is rather fun and adventurous, and she knows what good she is doing from it. You know how characters such as Sonic, Rai from Xiaolin Showdown, Luffy in One-Piece, and some others actually enjoy fighting dangerous foes many times like that due to the excitement and adventure, even though they know the dangers? Same goes for Jo, she fights them well, but has a good time doing it. And also similarly, she wouldn't find it as enjoyable in one of those desperate situations where it doesn't look like they'll make it (such as during Walpurgis Night's attack).
Most of the time, the fact that the Witches are former magical girls doesn't deter her too much. As I mentioned in the description, its like fighting someone who had been bitten by a werewolf or zombie or something, and had turned into one. I bet you'd certainly want to kill a werewolf or zombie, even though they were once human. Although then again, if that werewolf or zombie were previously someone you knew well, you probably wouldn't want to do it.
That's another part. Jo's taking down Witches and knows about it, but she certainly isn't heartless. Most of the Witches she fights at first are Witch Forms of others whom she never met or knew, and its a lot easier for her. However, if she were aware that a Witch were actually a former friend or teammate of her's, it wouldn't be as easy on her, and she'd be much less enthusiastic. She'd probably get a mental breakdown in the middle of the fight and not want to do it, perhaps letting her guard down too, until someone knocks some sense into her. She wouldn't try to make the Witch change back like Kyouko did with Oktavia, because she knows that can't be done. However, she'd get really emotional and sad about having to hurt her own friend, and she'd stop fighting, perhaps almost getting herself killed from this.
This plays out into the later parts of my series. Soon when she finds that she's fighting the Witch forms of those she knew well, unlike before when they were not others she knew of, it gets much less enjoyable for her, and starts to affect her overall. This later leads to her downfall. Just like all the others, the happiness and enjoyability of it, if any, doesn't last, and sooner or later with all the stuff they have to endure, they inevitably fall into despair.
I hope that this explains it. Sorry if it was a long reply, but I see that you don't really mind.
Maybe seeing her in your stuff would work. I'd love to roleplay with you, but I don't know how. Maybe when I'm finished with the other new Maho Shoujo in mine, Haruka Conley, I will. I'll let you know when I finish Haruka, she's rather interesting too, and I bet you'll like her as well.

Neat design of the soul gem. Though since its her one weakness, I just can't imagine it beeing safe for her to keep it there expose for people to attack it.

Yes, its a unique one. I figured it was a unique place, since none of the other girls in the official series had their Soul Gems there. I wanted Jo to be as unique as a Fan-Character as possible.
Plus, its still rather safe on her back, since it won't be as useful to attack her from the front (unless the attack pierced through to her back though). However, you are right that Jo has to literally "Watch Her Back" a lot, especially when fighting against Witches.
Her Maid Outfit doesn't really make her a maid in truth. Its mostly just something to make her look more cute and adorable. Just like the other girls in Maho Shoujo Madoka Magika, who also wear outfits that don't mean much about their position, but does make them more cute and lovable and Moe'.

Waimbert In reply to Hexidextrous [2012-11-14 15:26:05 +0000 UTC]
I gotcha, though it often made me question the praticality of having a Soul Gem on them. If its there life force, then would it be safe to hide it where no one can find it, it is the best way to stay safe.
Also, another thing I always thought was strange about magical girls is why do they wear dresses. Why wear something that serves no purpose for combat condition. Sure it looks cute for the audience to see, but how does it serves them on the battlefield. LOL. XD
π: 0 β©: 1
Hexidextrous In reply to Waimbert [2012-11-14 16:12:55 +0000 UTC]
Yes, the main reason of the Soul Gem is to make them harder to kill. Homura in the original series had her's in a more obscure area though. Homura's attached to the backside of her hand, which isn't somewhere another person would typically target.
I dunno about the outfits thoug, but it is cute. I mean even the girls in Sonic and Touhou don't wear body armor, despite being less protective, but it wouldn't be as cute.
Some series like Strike Witches have a better way of explaining it though, like in Strike Witches, it's because it would make them too heavy to fly with those Striker Unit Legs of theirs. If only these other series gave as good explanations. Oh well.
π: 0 β©: 1
Waimbert In reply to Hexidextrous [2012-11-14 16:35:35 +0000 UTC]
Strike Witches make more sense then, because they are trying to look aerodynamics. However, most magical girls looks like they are going to the prom, but its doesn't matter, because as you said the dress are wore to make the magical girls look cute, and if you can kickasses while wearing still wearing a dress then that makes you more badassses than wearing armor.XD

I made up her uniform on my own, but I also tried to make it look very "Madoka Magika-esque" as well, for she's supposed to be a girl like in that, who previously made a contract with Kyubey.
In truth though, the Maid Outfit is more just to look cute, as well as represents how she acts like sort of Zealot to Kyubey, almost being like his servant now. Just like how all the other girls in Madoka Magika wore outfits of similar sorts (not Maid Outfits though), but mostly the only purpose of them was that it looked cute.
