Description This is my reference sheet for "Jo Ayara." She is one of the new fan-characters that is going to appear in "Maho Shoujo Rika Magika," a Maho Shoujo Madoka Magika-based project of mine, and she is also one of the central characters too, though not as important as Rika Isoni is in it. I styled it in the same manner as similar reference sheets I've seen for this. This should give you a good idea on how Jo is supposed to look.
This was such a pain for me to draw, but it was worth it in the end. I love how cute she looks, and I really put a lot of detail into her. Well here's the description on her. Take time to read the description if you want to know about her more.

Jo Ayara is a 15-year old girl, and also one of the so-called, Maho Shoujos. Jo Ayara is also somewhat of a "Veteran" Maho Shoujo who is vastly different from most of the others. She made a contract with Kyubey long ago, and later on, she makes friends with Rika Isoni and decides to take her along with her on her spellbound adventures to slay the various Witches.

Jo is very optimistic, playful, and very interested in magic. As you can see, In her "powered up" form, she wears a light-gray Maid Outfit, and black shoes with sharp points on the end used for delivering kicks that impale. Although the Maid Outfit is mostly just because it looks extremely super cute and cuddly, I was also told that it is symbolic for her too. Since she acts much like a Zealot to Kyubey's cause, she can now in ways be considered like Kyubey's personal humble servant, and the Maid Outfit could symbolize that too.

Jo has a number of things that makes her very different from the other Shoujos. The first thing is that she is actually happy that she made a Contract. Most of the other Shoujos think of the Contract as a curse, but Jo finds it to be a gift instead. She does not care so much about the free wish that comes with the contract, but is happy for more than just that. She is happy about it because making the contract gave her amazing special powers, and now she cannot be killed by conventional means (only destroying her Soul Gem will kill her now). Plus she loves the thrill and adventure involved when she has to go into the various Witch Barriers and confront the various Evil Witches herself. It's so exciting to her and thrilling to be involved in that kind of thing. Finally, she thinks that Kyubey's motives to essentially preserve usable emotional energy is a just cause, and she wishes to help him with that. After all, someone's gotta do it, so she'll certainly do it. Not only that, but she also has a bunch of friends now, who are the other Maho Shoujo's, and she likes that.

Jo is very much aware of the fact that the Witches are former Maho Shoujos, but most of the time this does not deter her much. To Jo, slaying a Witch is essentially like slaying someone who had been bitten by a werewolf or zombie, and had turned into one. They've become hideous monstrous beings, and there's nothing you can do to save them now, you can only put them out of their misery before they terrorize others. Also, many of the Witches she fights, she most times assumes that they were previously a Maho Shoujo whom she never knew well or met, and its a lot easier for her because of that. However, if she were aware that a certain Witch was actually someone whom she knew rather well, it would actually be a lot harder on her emotionally, and she would most likely not want to do it if that were the case.

Jo is best friends with Rika Isoni, and she also is very good friends with Mami Tomoe. She also sort of likes Kyouko Sakura, but she hasn't known Kyouko as long. She likes Sayaka Miki, but she often times teases around with Sayaka, sometimes in ways that would annoy her, and the two are not total friends because of that. As for Madoka and Homura, she barely has even met Homura, and she hasn't even met Madoka at all.

Jo almost acts like a Zealot to Kyubey's cause. She believes that making a contract isn't totally bad, and to her, the good parts outweigh the bad parts. After all ,you even get a free wish, alongside these special powers and everything. She is aware that she might become a Witch herself, but that isn't too big of a problem for her. After all, all she has to do to avoid becoming a Witch is just "be happy" and not fall into despair, and this rather easy for her because she is very optimistic and playful and kind.
She is also a very respectful person and always lets others decide for themselves and never really tries to "force" them into doing something they don't want to do. After all, she is aware that not everyone has the same feelings about something, and she usually does take this into account with others. She does not reveal the full details of the contract to others though, as for she does not know if they can handle it and doesn't want them to fall into despair. So Jo does her best to not reveal that part, for to her, it's one of those things that her friends are better off not knowing, for their own good.
Jo also tries to persuade other girls into making a contract with Kyubey many times, although she doesn't pressure them into doing it, like Kyubey himself does. However, she has gotten quite a few girls to become Maho Shoujos too.
Unfortunately for Jo, her happy attitude won't last her forever, and soon she may pay dearly for that.

Click these links for more on Jo Ayara. I had to divide the reference sheet into 3 sheets, for certain reasons.
These two are more on her, and some of Jo's special abilities.

Hope you all like her. I plan to use Jo Ayara in some future artworks of mine too, including in the said fan-manga project that I am currently in progress of making, Maho Shoujo Rika Magika. If you want to use her in any of my artworks, please ask me first. Do not steal.

Wouldn’t staying in her Puella Magi form 24/7 cause her Soul Gem to gain taint faster?

I honestly don’t know, but recently I’ve decided there will be some scenes where she is not seen in her powered-up form Maid Outfit. Need to edit the description about that now.

I initially wanted her to be like characters in cuteness anime like RE:Zero or Miss Kobayashi’s Maid Dragon who remain dressed as a cute maid 24/7 and are super adorable for that. But lately I was told how much attention that would draw to her by others, so I decided she’d not be like that, even if it does make her especially cute and cuddly.

So this is the Puella Magi of yours that kamon-san showed me? She's very cute indeed! I wonder why no one else had this idea, a Puella Magi who's a Maid? It's so unique and adorable.
Though her one ability is a bit, well, unusual.

She reminds me a lot of Felicia from Fire Emblem: Fates. Was she anyhow inspired by her?

Why thank you! I know, she's very unique and super cute!

And I designed her long before Fire Emblem: Fates came out, so it's all a coincidence. But I do wuv Cute Maids, and Felicia is one adorable one too!

Well, without giving away too many spoilers, I'll tell you more about this awesome Cuteness + Action anime series!

The series is basically about a group of cute and cuddly girls who meet up with Kyubey, a mysterious white and fluffy creature with special powers. Kyubey offers for them to form a Contract with him, which involves him giving them Maho Shoujo powers and one wish for anything at all that they want. However, in return, they must devote their lives to helping him fight against the "Witches" these mysterious supernatural creatures who live in personal Witch Barriers with their Minions, and they attack people in concealment and feed off their negative emotions. Most of the girls take in on his offer, but soon find out they are in for a lot more than they bargained for.

Well, for her wish, well don't worry about it. She's one of those Maho Shoujos who have lasted a really long while and her wish doesn't even matter now.

I didn't think of a wish for her, and I decided that she'd be better if I just said that she's been one for so long that she doesn't even remember and it doesn't matter now. Considering Jo's nature, I think it works.

That's all I will say.

Jo IS super cute (especially on your cover page). But there's something about a magical girl who's perfectly accepting of Kyubey's system - even being all for it - that, in the context of the series is kind of... Off-putting.

That said, I think I've got a pretty good idea of what's going to wind up breaking her (poor Haruka...).

Hexidextrous In reply to WiseKarasu [2015-03-01 17:41:46 +0000 UTC]

A thing I should say about her though.

Have you seen the Witch, Quitterie? In my Fan-Manga, Jo is actually the former self of Quitterie, and Quitterie was a girl who formerly accepted Kyubey's stuff too.

Yes, I have in mind what's going to wind up breaking her too.

Also yes, Haruka does eventually become a Witch too, though Haruka's Witch Form is a completely original Witch. I don't want to give away what her Witch Form will be, but she will be a fearsome one indeed.

Thank you for the interest you've been taking in my project and other works!

Overall, I think I like this character quite  a lot.

Hexidextrous In reply to miki-chan13 [2014-03-05 02:20:52 +0000 UTC]

Yep, she is very interesting. In fact, many people seem to like her most out of all three of my Maho Shoujo characters. I don't know why, but people seem to like her more than my other two. Perhaps it's because of how unique and different she is from most other Maho Shoujos. What do you think of the creative way that she takes advantage of how the Maho Shoujos can't die unless their Soul Gem is destroyed?

Also, she's my rendition of the Maho Shoujo who eventually becomes Quitterie, as I told you before.

Hinged and Unhinged? What do you mean by that?

Berserker? I've rarely seen that comparison. More people I know have compared her to characters like Monsoon in Metal Gear Rising, Buggy the Clown in One-Piece, and Ms. Fortune from Skullgirls.

miki-chan13 In reply to Hexidextrous [2014-03-05 02:51:35 +0000 UTC]

I think it might have to do with the fact she actually likes Kyubey even though she knows his whole deal. Like I said, simultaneously impressed and horrified.
Yeah, I remember that.
I mean that she's not exactly sane but the way she comes off would make her sound reasonable and logical. Like Kyubey.
Eh, I guess it was just me then... that was all I could think of at the moment I was writing.

I do like her, I can tell you put quite a bit into her and yes I agree she's pretty cute; however, it's all too possible to like a character and still be disturbed or sickened by them. For example- Lelouch vi Britannia; he's a magnificent bastard and chess master, but sometimes I can't take his stupidity with women and people in general and his whole deal with people betraying him because whether he acknowledges it, he thinks himself the center of the world.

I made that base when I was first starting out, like two to four years ago. People's interests don't change, they just lose intensity. I think maids can be pretty adorable, especially Ayara.

Death-By-Grunge [2013-06-25 15:08:48 +0000 UTC]

I think Jo is an excellent example of a mentally unhinged character. She cuts herself up without hesitation, she knows about the darker sides of being a magical girl and yet still relishes the duties and she thinks that just "being happy" will stop her from becoming a witch. This, I believe, is a wonderful deconstruction of the magical girl archetype; someone who dedicates their full self to the ideal of a magical girl, to the exclusion of almost all else in life. This truly fits the tone of Madoka Magica; being a magical girl will break you, one way or another. It seems that with Jo, the price she paid was her sanity and sense of reality. You have truly grasped the spirit of Madoka Magica with this character. Bravo.

I know, and you should see my other two as well, Rika Isoni and Haruka Conley. They are also very unique and fitting too. I'm also working on some new Witches for my series, although they're taking more time because their art styles can be hard. However, I did finish one Witch so far, Lydia The Night Witch. Go check them out too.

By the way, have you seen Quitterie The Needle Witch? In my series, Jo is actually who Quitterie was before she became a Witch. Quitterie is like Jo because she also uses Needle Blades and Energy Blasts in her attacks, is devoted a ton to Kyubey's duties, and has a respectful nature too. Although Jo isn't the main character in my series, she does play an important role. And her part of it sort of becomes a type of origin story of how Quitterie came into being.

Lydia is indeed an interesting witch. Although I must say I feel the same problem with Rika as I did with Haruka. She's like... a paper doll with character traits slapped onto her. If you catch my meaning.

What I'd like to see is character interaction, a chance to actually see these traits fleshed out. Would you perhaps be interested in RPing with me? I have been considering taking up PPPM RPing, and I'd love to do it with your characters to find out more about them.

Yeah, well the thing is that I wanted to describe them as much as I could, but without revealing any potential major spoilers for stuff I have in store for this Fan-Manga project of mine, Rika Magika. They do have a lot to them, some that I didn't mention, but I don't want to mention those traits for fear that it will ruin some of it. Rika Magika is coming along slowly but steadily, but I'm working hard to finish it.

Also thank you for your offer, but I already got my characters involved in an RP with my friend, ~kamon-san and he's found them to be rather good alongside his. You should check out his profile and see. Sorry, but I'll have to decline.

Nico--Neko [2013-03-05 03:06:10 +0000 UTC]

I must agree that she looks adorable, I'm liking the maid design and overall use of grey as her main color. (^^) Her ability to disassemble herself is quite scary, in a way, because it basically embodies the truth about magical girls and their ''zombie bodies''. The fact that she takes it so well is surprising, and it could make her look like she has lost contact with reality in some people's eyes.

She has a good nature, I can tell, but it's so surprising that she knows so many of the dark secrets of Mahou Shoujos and can still remain optimistic. Is she the kind of person who would go around talking about these secrets openly because she considers it no big deal? If so, her meeting with Saki could turn out to be more dangerous than good, since Saki is currently in a state of blissful ignorance. If Ayara spoke of any of these dark secrets to Saki, she could make the poor girl breakdown without realizing why. (For example your character just naturally mentions the fact that all magical girls eventually turn to witches; Saki freaks out, her soul gem becomes tainted as she breaks down and Yuki arrives just in time to wipe that memory from her. Amane then arrives and sees Ayara as an enemy)

Imagine how tragic it would be that because of such an incident, Amane begins to try to keep Ayara away from Saki, even though Ayara only had good intentions... =O Though now I'm talking worse case scenario. I don't know how Ayara would act with Saki.

Hexidextrous In reply to Nico--Neko [2013-03-05 16:42:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh I almost forgot. For the whole "Strategic Body Disassembly" thing. Its a big part of Jo overall, and she uses and such quite frequently. I've gotten mixed opinions on this. Some of my friends/supporters told me its kind of cool, funny, and sort of cute too. And others said it makes her a bit more morbid and creepy. I see you are one of the ones who'd find it creepy, but both ways, it still fits into Maho Shoujo Madoka Magika.

First of all, I DID NOT base this skill of her's off of those Headless Mami Tomoe jokes that have been everywhere. I based it more off of the fact that it was shown that as long as their Soul Gem does not get destroyed and stays within 100 Meters of them, they won't die. They can survive wounds that would normally be fatal, and can't feel the pain of it anymore (though they feel other things).
I personally like to call this part, their Semi-Immortality. I mean they are almost immortal, but not completely, and it is still quite possible to kill them. They're just more difficult to kill overall. And BTW, the only reason Mami died was that Charlotte swallowed and destroyed her Soul Gem, which was attached ontop her head, but she would have survived otherwise, despite that.

I always thought that if they can now survive stuff like this, then why the heck not take advantage of it? Overall, this could be actually quite useful for them. I could understand maybe them not feeling comfortable about this, or having trouble adapting from it, but if not, it could be used to their advantage quite well.
That's what makes Jo very unique. The other Maho Shoujos only used their Soul Gem Semi-Immortality to survive more of a beating in combat. Jo on the other hand, uses it more to separate herself into pieces and have her body parts move individually, then just pull herself together later on. She's thinking better on this and it makes her more effective overall.

By the way, this doesn't make them "zombies." If they were zombies, they be more withered and decayed and such, would be near insane and mindless, and would think of little more than to attack people like monsters and devour their brains. They aren't like that though. Also, after reviewing some of the original series, I see that their bodies still feel normal, and not cold and lifeless like a corpse.
They're not zombies, they're just Semi-Immortal. As in they're pretty much still alive, but they live in a different manner than ordinary people do, and can now survive normally fatal bodily harm due to their magic. Ever seen characters such as Deadpool in Marvel, Buggy the Clown and Trafalgar Law in One Piece, Alisa Bosconovich in Tekken, Bryce Boltzmann in Neverdead, or The Green Knight from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight? Same goes here, they aren't zombies, just others with supernatural abilities to survive normally fatal harm. Jo doesn't think of herself or others as a zombie, just a person gifted with supernatural abilities to survive wounds that would kill a normal person.

Personally, I don't find it to be very scary though. I mean its not like she still has blood gushing out of the stub areas or anything (that would be more freaky). The original series never even had blood, and even so, it probably would've stopped by now, for how long those brackets have been in there. In fact, I sometimes wonder if the Maho Shoujos can even bleed anymore or not. And not only do those brackets help make it more easier for her to split apart without cutting herself, but they make the stub part look more "clean" and okay, and not so fleshy and all. I dunno about you, but I personally don't find it to be very scary. A cool and interesting skill from her Semi-Immortality, but not scary.I understand that some people do though, but the original Maho Shoujo Madoka Magika was scary at times, you know.

Now as for how she handles it so well. She first learned about it when she survived getting cut in two by a Witch, and saw how the Soul Gem let her survive it. After Kyubey explained the details, she then installed those bracket things into her so she could do it more conveniently and easily, and so that the Gem would not heal those ever and they'd stay separated. She then got to practicing and adapting to this well. Now she's actually very used to it. Perhaps a bit too used to it, as for she makes herself fall apart very frequently, except when in public as to not startle others who don't know her.

One reason, as I mentioned before, was that she was previously (and actually still is), a big fan of that magic trick where the Magician puts you in a box and saws you in half, and now she can do it without faking it. Another reason, she feels that it makes her so special and unique, since doing this to a normal person would kill them, but she can survive it now, and it makes her special. Not only that, but when Jo is in pieces, she claims that it makes her feel much more "lighter" and "smaller" and mentions there being an "airy" feeling over the stub parts, which she enjoys. She also likes how she can use this skill in many different ways, like for instance, being in many places at one time, and more. As I mentioned previously, she uses this both in and out of battle, and a whole lot.

Also somewhat funny. Jo tends to be rather playful and cute with this skill. Often times while doing it, she makes jokes about it. Like for instance, when using her special attack that involves charging up her head and throwing it at the Witch, she sometimes says things like "Heads up!" (get the joke?) Or, "You want a piece of me? Well I'll give you one!" and other such ones. When not fighting Witches, sometimes she'll do things like play with her own head as if it were a softball, or accomplish more things in different areas, or stick objects onto her neck and see how she looks like with that object as a "fake head," or even using her own body parts as a paperweight and more.
One of her favorite things though, is when someone pulls off her head and cuddles and hugs her like a pillow or something (like Murasaki does a lot with Kyubey). She just loves that so much, and will let anyone whom she trusts do it to her, as long as they are gentle with her. You can see that she really enjoys this, and I hope this helps you understand her. Its one of her biggest traits.

The brackets allow her to do this without cutting herself, and reattach her limbs more easily. However, this also makes her body more fragile, and she gets knocked apart quite easily. Like say if she were to fall from a bit of a distance or get hit by a strong force, it would most likely make her fall apart quickly. So this can sometimes be helpful for her, but other times not so helpful, especially if one of her body parts falls out of the 100 Meter range of her gem, or gets caught somewhere out of reach. Nevertheless, she pretty much used to it by now, and reassembling herself isn't too difficult most of the time.
In a manner, she's almost like a living Jigsaw Puzzle or something like that.

Oh, and I wouldn't say Jo's really lost sense of reality, but she enjoys how she's capable of doing stuff that normal people can't. She is aware that normal people can't do stuff like her though, and she certainly isn't a crazed person who would decapitate others like a maniac. She likes how she can do it, but is aware that others would be killed by this.

Although since technically the other Maho Shoujos could probably do it, Jo would have certain problems with doing it or not. She would kind of like to have a friend who has this Semi-Immortality play around with her in this manner too. However, she is still very respectful, and she won't make them do this if they don't want too. She realizes at times that even though the other Maho Shoujos could perhaps pull this disassembly skill off, they might not like it or be used to it, and she won't do that if she knows about it.

In fact, in one scene I have planned for Rika Magika, at one part, Sayaka Miki gets herself literally chopped to bits. Thankfully, her Soul Gem keeps her alive, but unlike Jo, Sayaka isn't as cool with it. In fact, Sayaka then starts freaking out, and Jo realizes that Sayaka isn't very comfortable with this. For Sayaka, the main reason she freaks out from this happening to herself is that it makes it even more apparent that Kyubey tricked her and she no longer has her Soul inside her body like a normal girl, which she really hated him for. Jo understands how Sayaka is like, and then helps Sayaka put herself back together. So she wouldn't do this to them if she knows they don't like it, and would respect that.

I hope this explains all the stuff about her "Body Disassembly" skill, and why she's okay with it and all, even if it was very long.

By the way, speaking of how she respects others, even if they have the ability to survive that. If Murasaki, Yuki, or Yoko were to have themselves cut into pieces like this, would they be as comfortable with it, or would they freak out like Sayaka does in my series? I would want to know so that Jo would probably want to play around/mess around with them this way, or maybe have her teach them about how she pulls it off and adapts to it and such. Of course, she'd only do it if they were willing and wanted to, and she wouldn't make them if she knew they won't enjoy it. So would they really mind being cut apart without dying or not?

Since Amane already has learned many of the dark secrets about Mahou Shoujos and Soul Gems, I think she'd be able to accept that truth as well, though it would make her uncomfortable since it's pretty much a constant reminder that their bodies are souless. But it is true it's convenient, and knowing that she would probably be able to protect Saki even more so she'd end up accepting it.

Saki on the other hand is extremely sensitive emotionally and she has her own naive idea of what it is to be magical girl. Seeing Jo do it would freak her out a lot already, and learning the reason for it could break her down completely. She would positively never be able to do it herself. In the best case scenario, Jo could tell Saki that disassembling herself is her ''special power'', so Saki wouldn't freak out. If it was presented to her this way, she would accept Jo easily and wouldn't mind holding her head. I think she'd even be able to laugh about it with Jo, but she would never disassemble herself or know the actual truth about it.

Yuki would accept it right away and probably respect Jo for the creative way she uses her semi-immortality. Chances are she found out about it in a way very similar to Jo. She's a little too cold to take the initiatiive to cuddle with Jo's head by herself, but if Jo incited her to do it even slightly, she wouldn't mind. Of all my Mahou Shoujos, she would be the one to accept and befriend Jo the easiest, even if Saki is the friendlier one.

Himiko would try to exploit Jo's power as a weakness and try to turn it against her. Even though Himiko enjoys her semi-immortality, she would never consider disassembling herself. She considers herself too beautiful and she sees this technique as an ugly and inelegant power. She would not be freaked out if it happened to her, but she would feel humiliated.

Hmm, seems reasonable. I can see why someone who has this ability would probably not enjoy it. And that's a good thing too that I never thought of, also not mentioning the fact that the Soul Gem now contains their very lifeforce, since that would be startling too, though most of the girls that Jo is with already know this, but if they didn't, she certainly wouldn't want to startle them and tell them.

Technically, her actual "unique special ability" is the energy blasts and her weapons such as her needle blades, but she certainly could ad-lib it by telling Saki otherwise. Still, I could see why she'd be uncomfortable, but she'd see her do it quite soon, since she always uses this skill to fight Witches more easily.

And I can see how this would take time to get used to. In fact, Jo originally had to get used to this and adapt and practice, but now she's more adapt at falling apart than a house of cards.
In fact, I could imagine now some scenes of Yuki training with Jo on how to be good at this. However, Yuki would have to stick brackets in-between her limbs like Jo did too, or else she'd literally have to dice herself up every time she wants too. I dunno if Yuki would really like having brackets put into her, but its what makes it way easier and convenient.

As for Himico, if she feels embarrassed by it, and since she's one of the villains, I could see Jo using this against her when she fights her. Like in one battle, at one point, Jo would slice her head off with her staff. Then Himico would be like "Hey, give that back! That's mine!" Jo would then be like, "You want this? Go get it!" and then toss her head a far distance away. Therefore, Himico's body would then humorously run off to retrieve her head, and Jo and her friends would make there escape. Would be a neat way for a fight against her to turn out.
