Description

Since she was a teeny tiny foal, life had been perfect for Sola.

She was the perfect daughter to two perfect parents. Her father was a noble lead stallion. Her mother, a kind mare within the herd. A perfect couple. Their daughter had the best attributes of each of them: she was strong, like her father; beautiful, like her mother; and a filly - she could never be a threat to the herd when she was older. Her parents were ecstatic. She was the best daughter a parent could ask for. She wasn't fussy, never rebelled, never wandered too far from the herd. The most perfect child.

As she grew up, she continued to live up to the expectations of perfection. She was one of the most beautiful fillies in the herd, but was kept humble by her mother's teachings. She never demanded too much attention. She never demanded much of anything. She was perfectly complacent with her life. She had all her wants and cares taken care of for her by her parents. Why should she need anything else?

It wasn't until she watched her half siblings grow older and leave the herd that she began to wonder if there was something more beyond the herd. She was always under the impression that she'd stay with her parents forever, and they'd only reinforced those thoughts. Her herd was safe. Her herd would protect her. Why should she ever need anything more? She didn't, she concluded. She would want for nothing if she stayed where she was.

She truly believed that. Well, that was until she met Carver. She had gone off by herself to get a drink from a nearby stream, when she had stumbled into the handsome bachelor stallion. Too naïve to know the dangers a strange stallion could pose to her, she didn't run when he approached her. He was so kind to her, and if there was one thing she was lacking in life, it was fresh faces. A new friend surely couldn't hurt. Not when he was so incredibly kind and sweet.

For the first time in her life, she did something that was... less than perfect. She began to sneak away to meet Carver. She tried many times to convince Carver to meet her family, but he always avoided the subject. He convinced her that their meetings should continue to be secret. Something about that didn't sit right with her, but she agreed to his wishes. After all, they were friends. If there was anything she had learned about Carver, it was that he knew more about the world than she did. She was eager to learn from him about what lie beyond.

It was shortly after that their friendship shifted into something more. She began to get nervous around him. There were butterflies in her stomach every time he smiled at her. When he called her beautiful, it felt different than when she heard it from her family. She wanted him to think she was beautiful. She wanted him to think she was perfect.

It was then that he asked her to leave with him. He promised her that he would show her what lied beyond her herd. She had heard so many wonderful things from the stories he told her. There was a temptation there that she had never felt before. Still, there was the part of her that shied away from the idea. Her parents provided her everything she could ever need. Perhaps she could live with just the stories...

Finally, Carver gave her the ultimatum. He was leaving the area. Heading north for the summer. Her herd was not going that way. She was either to go with him, or say goodbye to him. Forever. Not just him. The opportunity to see more. To experience more beyond what her family could provide her. Carver would protect her. Carver would be there for her. Terrified, but excited, she agreed. In the dead of night, she snuck away from her herd and met up with him. Together, they headed north, leaving her family far, far behind.

Not long after she left, she began to realize that life with Carver was far from perfect. She had very little survival skills for a mustang her age. The stallion grew increasingly frustrated with her naivety. She cowed to his anger every time, suddenly very aware that if he left her, she would be lost and alone in a scary world she hardly understood. Still, now that she'd given in to her curiosity once, she found it hard for her to stay away. She became more trouble than she was worth, it seemed. Carver told her as much, several times. Still, he never allowed her to go far from him. She belonged to him, he would say. No one else.

Sad and feeling more alone than she had ever felt in her entire life, she began sneaking away from him. Not far, so that when he inevitably found her, she could feign innocence. But far enough that she could get some time to herself. It was then that she stumbled into another stallion. She was nervous this time. Carver had stressed the importance of not being around other stallions. This bachelor, however, seemed concerned for her. He asked if she was okay. Sola ended up spilling everything to him. Her frustrations, her fears, her homesickness. It poured out of her with an unstoppable force. She spoke of how she expected things to be different when she left her herd with Carver, and how she was starting to fear his temper. And the way this stallion, Thatch, spoke to her was so much different than how Carver had ever spoken to her. She felt as though she was actually being herd. His tone was genuine and honest. He warned her that she may want to leave Carver and that he may not be the horse she originally thought he was. That, she agreed with.

Suddenly, Carver was upon the pair, attacking Thatch. Horrified, Sola begged Carver to stop. Her stallion turned on her, accusing her of cheating, accusing her of trying to leave. He called her horrendous names, and when she cried, he struck her. Thatch attacked, commanding Sola to run. And run she did. She ran and ran and ran until her legs gave out. She dropped to the earth, her sides soaked in sweat, and her face drenched from her tears.

She cried until she had no tears left to shed. She was a fool. She should've never left her home.

Everything had been so perfect, and she had ruined it all.
