It's a clear and good tutorial that is both helpful and fun to read.

I tried making some fire before you released the tutorial. It didn't look nearly as fluid as the fire in your Catch Fire; looked far more aggressive. I still can't make fire look fluid (perhaps I should play with the opacity and try other brushes to smudge with?), but had even more fun after you made this tutorial. It's great! I didn't realise that adding white and blurring (smoothing) before smudging (warping) could be a good idea.

I love how giving of your knowledge doesn't consume it.

I think you've told me before, but refresh my memory; what programs do you use?

Awesome, thanks!!

Yeah, the white really makes the colors all... pop more. It's sweet. And playing around with the opacity might help, yes- also weaving "strands" of fire through each other helps too. You can also try making mini blobs of fire separate from the main flames, or sparks (which are little blobs of orange on red on dark red, quite small and smoothed).

Ooohh, aggressive fire sounds awesome. It's angry!!

Jasc Paintshop Pro, I believe. It's not very common, especially not compared with Photoshop, which the whole world but me seems to swear by. What do you use?

I made a wheel of fire! It looks really cool on the black background. If only I knew what to do with it...

Paintshop Pro is what the computers at school have, I think. They used to have Photoshop, but then suddenly not. On this computer I have Photoshop Elements 5.0, on the laptop there's 6.0. I've also got ArtRage 2. There stops the non-freeware programs. My OS is Windows Vista, so I have of course got Paint as well. In addition I have GIMP, but the layout frustrates me, so I don't use it much. And then there's Alchemy, which rocks. I also have Apophysis, although fractal art isn't quite my niche. But as long as it's free... Oh and then there's a trial version of Paint Tool SAI, but it will expire. And I'm not piratin' it! D8<

The majority of pictures in my gallery are made with PS Elements 5.0.

Sweetness!!! Can I see?

Wow, you've got lots of cool stuff. But if it's free, it's extra lovely.
My paint program came with the obscure animation program I use as a trial, and you have to register it when you're done. But the animation thing is saved to the harddrive, so I've never had to register it.... it's weird.

Ooooh. 5.0 sounds spiffy. And they turn out so prettyyyyyyy.

Augh, I didn't mean to hit send. Why can't different sites be consistent with their preview/send buttons?

Elements 5.0 and ArtRage 2 came with my tablet. ArtRage is really awesome, although I don't think it works on Mac.
I've heard of something like that happening before... Oh, well, their fault for not fixing the bugs.

Thank you!

Of-the-Leaves In reply to HippieLlama [2009-10-03 19:11:29 +0000 UTC]

Sure! I crammed three of my favourites into one picture. They don't go well together; the wheel doesn't look like it lacks light colours when it's alone and the big one actually looks better on a white background, but that wouldn't work for the other two... [link] Ah, well.

HippieLlama In reply to Of-the-Leaves [2009-10-07 20:27:24 +0000 UTC]

Sweetness!!

I love the one in the middle... so swooshy. The wheel is neat- the way it swirls around it self makes it look like its spinning even though it's not moving. And it's very orange. For the experiment phase, they're waaaaaaay better than my first attempts. Small blobs of odd-looking color. I like making the fire, though... it's fun in weird colors too. I have some purple fire bolts that I outta post sometime soon...

In my A.P. english class, we have a huge collection of assignments that go withevery quarter. Essays on analysis and themes. A bio. on the author of th book we studied. A rundown of literary terms, stuff like that.

Precisely. They're protective too though. I love them. I got really sick friday night, and woke up at one point and couldn't stop shaking. They sat on me until I fell asleep again, which seems insensitive, but honestly, I was so panicked, that it was probably the best thing for me.

But I couldn't make it work. >_>
Kind of could, but meh. It started frustrating me when I got impatient with the smudging/dragging, cuz the white and red were making pink. o-o XD

HippieLlama In reply to LifelessEvilMuffin [2009-09-21 10:34:57 +0000 UTC]

I'm all too familiar with that. XD You just need more orange and yellow usually, oddly enough.

Hmm. Maybe I'll try that sometime. I DO love yellow and orange, so... XD
Oh. Maybe I could try it backwards. -shot- White, yellow, orange, then red. Instead of the other way around. XD
