Well after watching the epic finale to MLP season 2, I couldnt resist redrawing one of my favorite scenes. I guess you could say the princess got... Royally Screwed! B)

Seems to me the idea was that pure love is more powerful than simple raw magic. I don't think the Changeling Queen is meant to be very powerful normally. After all she got beaten by the power of love too.
Also, her fans might hate me for saying this but I don't think she's very smart. She did bugger all to try to act like Cadence, it's a wonder that only Twilight noticed how of character she was. Her plan for taking over Canterlot once revealed seemed to be hope that numbers and her own magic (which she didn't even know the full strength of) would win the day. How was she going to keep Canterlot under control? She didn't even think that letting the real Cadence Near SA might be a bad idea. Not much of plan.
