Description
Crappy title, I know.Hi @ all.
Since I have no good ideas at the moment I tried to perfect my planetmaking methods. That lead to this one. Everything (except the atmosphere) is real 3d. The landocean map has a bump-, reflectivity- and highligthmap, there are two cloudmaps with transparency- and bumpmaps. One lightsource. Rendered in Vue.
Every ctitique is welcome.
If you want to use this planet in one of your pictures feel free to do so. Just give me credit and link to it.

Do you do your planets in 3d too? If so, what program do you use or what program would you recommend? (I'm a bit planet-crazy as my gallery shows).

well i try not too because it takes FOREVER to render but i use MAX and render with Vray.

Well, rendering a planet in Vue is really fast (compared to other 3d progs I guess). A planet in size 2500x2500 under one hour with quality settings high!

haha dang that is fast but you can tell the difference

I like this piece a lot, especially the way the clouds cast some shadow on the terrain. Do you put your cloud map on a separate object or is it just normal mapped?

I did not only put one cloud map on a separate object, I did it twice. Two cloud layers with slightly different settings and with bumpmaps (very subtle).

Nice. You've rather inspired me to get into planet rendering.
You should check out Blender 's compositing tools, if you like having posteffects integrated. That's how I did the halo effect for this scrap .
I don't like doing postproduction with an external program; to me it just doesn't feel like 3D anymore.

Great! If I'm able to inspire someone I must be doing something right.
About using another program for postproduction: If I have to I'll do it. but I'm trying to get that done in Vue too. I mean everything is 3d except the atmosphere. Has to work somehow, hasn't it? I guess I just haven't found the right settings...
I put you on my to see where you are going with rendering planets.

Heh. Thanks for the :+watch:.
What I'd do in Blender is render the planet as a solid halo on an atmosphere layer then blur it and composite it around the regular planet render. Does Vue have anything like that?

I have Blender somewhere on my HDD. Maybe I should install it and try it out. But not right now, I'm still learning Vue and that's hard enough atm. Maybe it's possible to do that in Vue... but if it is I still haven't figured out how.

This looks extremely awesome man. The only real complaint I have is that it looks a little blurry at the top. Other than that I'd have to say it's your best planet yet.

Yeah, it's a little blurry at the top but bigger maps won't work due to not enough memory. ;(

That blur is probably intentional-most planets have a sort of glow about them due to light reflecting off the atmosphere.

Unfortunately that blur isn't intentional. It's simply because I can't work with bigger textures. Not enough RAM I'd say. But I like your explanation too.

Wow, that is extremely convincing. One of the best rendered planets I've seen.

Thanks a lot. I must say I'm a bit proud of it. And I'm eager to see if anyone will use it in a picture.
