Yeah, the links are outdated. I guess tutorials are not written in stone. And you're right, that 400 is meant to be 4000. Thanks man, I appreciate it.

What do you mean about seams?

Really, this tutorial it's good, anyway.

do you happen to have a tutorial of this for photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to Makoim [2011-01-18 08:32:13 +0000 UTC]

If you look closely, this is actually a tutorial in Photoshop. It describes how to create maps for planets in 3ds Max. If you change the maps to square ones (4000x4000 pixels for example) and use the spherize filter in Photoshop on them, you can adapt this technique to Photoshop only.

I was only wondering because there are tabs for the layers that I don't have on my version of photoshop

Hey. The 8000 x 400 is actually a typo. It should be 8000 x 4000. As long as you use 2:1 (2000 x 1000; 12000 x 6000 etc.) you're always fine.

i got almost all of it. mine turned out well. though in the tutorial at the start you said "8000 x 400" so that messed me up o3o but when i finish i could copy all layers and then convert em to a smart layer and upsize it right?

I did all the steps but combining every layer together didn't work.. not much of a photoshop expert here

could you tell me in some little steps how to put the map in the mask? cuz I don't really get it..

but nice tutorial !

hoevelkamp In reply to elyo11 [2010-08-05 20:59:36 +0000 UTC]

Hey there,

OK, to put the map in the mask layer follow these steps:

- choose your map for the mask and select it with ctrl + a, then copy it with ctrl + c
- click into your mask while holding the alt button, you should see the empty mask
- now paste your map into the mask with ctrl + v

you're done. If you have more questions, just ask. Happy rendering.

Love this tutorial, just one question. How did you set the continental layer as a layer mask to the land texture layer? That is the only part that stumps me, otherwise this is great.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to DragonBreath75 [2010-06-29 21:37:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot. To your question: Just copy the continental layer (ctrl+c) add a mask to the land texture layer, then hold (ALT) and click into the mask (view should switch to the mask) and insert the continental layer (ctrl+v). I guess that is what you wanted?

hoevelkamp In reply to secretdevidome51 [2010-02-19 08:04:20 +0000 UTC]

Hello young Padawan. I'm so sorry, but I have to say, I made them. Well, I made them, but not the clouds map, that one is from the net. If you read carefully through the tutorial you'll find links to where you can get good satellite images, which I use as base for my maps. It's all in there.

Maybe how you do your other planets, like a rocky deserty planet or something. Or do you just make a different base texture?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to Sostopher [2009-08-17 10:40:11 +0000 UTC]

That's it. I just make a different base texture. Basically I hunt fitting satellite images and go from there.
