Did you use the UVW mapping for the planets or did you just manually adjust the size of your maps to create seamless ends?

hoevelkamp In reply to ZOMGasian [2011-06-03 06:17:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, in fact I didn't care about the seams. I just avoided them. Wouldn't be working if I'd go and animate it like that.

Hahaha so there's my problems! xD Any tips or pointers on fixing up seams when animating?

hoevelkamp In reply to ZOMGasian [2011-06-03 22:48:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, that depends on how close you want to get to the planet in the end. I work mostly with textures not bigger than 8000x4000 but tile them on the sphere for the planet if I want to get close. That unfortunately works only on stills. If you want to do a zoom on a planet that wouldn't work. So you need a really huge texture that'll look good all the way. I'd say 16000x8000 but you'll also need lots of RAM to work with textures like that.
To fix up seams there's only one way, when you create your textures in Photoshop you'll have to take the texture, cut it in half and switch places, then fix the resulting seam in the middle using the clone stamp tool (for example). You do that, you get your seamless texture. Hope this helps, if not, just note or email me. Address is on my front page.

Thanks! That really helped! I wasn't sure about size relationships for close ups but now I do!

Sorry for the late reply, Are you talking about the material editor like shown in the tutorial? You'll find that in the upper toolbar. It's the checkered ball. If that's not what you meant, please note me with more details on what it is you're trying to do, maybe I can help you.

Great tutorial!!! But, I'm a stuck n00b. How do I get the transparency map from the color image? (Layer 4 image above)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to LotusFAN [2010-06-18 21:38:41 +0000 UTC]

Easily done. Desaturate the color image and then push the contrast up to your liking. You can then add noise to it (this is optional) to make it look like particles.

Hi hoevelkamp,

I have a little question:
I want to make a planet ring with bigs and visibles asteroids, do you think this tutorial for Vue is easily practicable in 3Ds Max ?
=> [link]

Maybe you have another method to have this rendering ?

Thanks,

PS: I featured your awesome tuto on my french blog: [link]

hoevelkamp In reply to MA7R [2010-02-19 19:04:57 +0000 UTC]

Hi DjMart,

I think it's possible in Max with the help of the particle system, but I also think it's easier in Vue. I use rocks from Vue to form asteroid fields or even rings in Max. Export some rocks from Vue, import them into Max and from there it's just cloning, rotating, scaling and positioning. Done for this piece: [link] with that method. It's easy and fast.

And thanks a lot for featuring me on your blog. It's an honor. I really like how you're presenting the tutorials there. My french is crappy to non-existing, but I guess I can grasp the meaning.

In this creation (don't come any closer), do you placed the asteroids one by one ??

I realised some asteroids in 3dsmax as in this creation [link] but I'll test Vue, it seems to be so easy and the render is very good

No problem for the article, your tuto are really greats

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to MA7R [2010-02-19 19:22:04 +0000 UTC]

Not really one by one. It works like this. You clone ten different asteroids, rotate them a bit, scale them a bit and then you clone those 20 asteroids and do the same again and so on. Fairly easy and exponential growth in numbers. Once you have enough asteroids you simple select them in groups and push them around. A very fast method.

Those asteroids are really nice looking. Created using the noise modifier? I tried that too, but I think the method via importing rocks from Vue is easier and I think the rocks from Vue look better. You can always slap another texture on them in Max.

I left a comment on your blog, maybe you can translate it for your readers.

Hm okay your method is the same that I use with my asteroids but in photoshop for me.

Don't care about your comment, if my readers understand your tuto they can understand your com
And it's good for them to practice their english

Hey there, I know it's been a long time, but meanwhile I tried to create a ring with asteroids and dust in 3ds Max. I used the particle system. It works, but the results in Vue are much better looking and go easier on the RAM. Just wanted to let you know.

Ok, thank you for the information

Finally I use the BlPh Vue's tuto and it works great as you say
(but it's hard to have the good point of view ^^')

PS: I'm looking forward to the next Attrius pack, I hope we will work soon.

That's exactly what I do. I use tutorials only as hints and clues, not as the only one way to achieve things.

How do you do this in photoshop?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to GregStitz [2010-01-19 21:13:05 +0000 UTC]

If you refer to putting the rings around a planet, that can be achieved in Photoshop by using the transform perspective tool. If that's not what you meant, please clarify.

GregStitz In reply to hoevelkamp [2010-01-20 00:46:38 +0000 UTC]

Oy. If I didn't find 3D impossible I'd say it was cheating

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to bloknayrb [2009-06-30 15:49:27 +0000 UTC]

? 3d is cheating? bwuah... You can always leave the 3ds Max part alone and do the rest in PS too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bloknayrb In reply to hoevelkamp [2009-06-30 15:59:19 +0000 UTC]

Haha not that its actually cheating, because obviously, since I can't seem to do it, its not easy at all, but sometimes it seems like 3D artists do have certain advantages with regard to perspective and lighting. Its a tradeoff really, but the grass is always greener, eh?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to bloknayrb [2009-07-01 21:21:12 +0000 UTC]

You're right about that. (The greener grass). The main reason for me to go 3d was to get it right and as realistic as possible. Still working on that.
