Well, whenever I make digital-like comics, I actually just print out the boxes on a standard 8.5x11" sheet, since I'm really not that great at drawing into the computer.

I don't know how big the boxes are themselves, pixel-wise...All I know is that I manage to fit 3 boxes per page of paper for printing them out

I'd like to ask a question about boxes, Everytime I use the box tool, The box's i make are solid black with no inside to draw in~ how did you make a box with an inside?

Basically, you're making a border

If you're using Photoshop (I think it's the same regardless what version you have), take your square tool and make a square.

While it's highlighted, go to Select -> Modify -> Border. A pop-up window will come up and ask you how thick you want the border. You can play around with that until you have the thickness you want (it'll be in pixel-width).

When you've settled on a pixel-width for the border, click Ok, and it'll appear there's a square border highlighted.

While it's highlighted, you can flood fill it with whatever colour you're using.

And that should do it I hope that made sense

You mean the boxes that I draw inside? Or dialogue boxes?

Basically, I just use the square tool

I'll have two layers: the background layer, and then a layer on top of that that's reserved for my squares. There's a reason why I put my squares on a separate layer

In the "squares" layer, I'll select the square tool, and form the square - it'll appear as a broken-line square (or rectangle, or whatever 4-sided shape you have there). While it appears as a broken-line, go to Select -> Modify -> Border. It'll ask you how many pixels wide you want your border...the more pixels you put in there, the thicker your border will be.

Once you've selected your pixel size for the border, click Ok. Your square should have two outlined broken-lines then, which will make up your border. While it's like this, make sure your Primary colour is black (if you want a black border). Then go to Edit -> Fill, and choose the primary colour as the border colour. You should now have black border for your box We're not done yet though!

Press CTRL-D to de-select the box. Then, click on the Magic Wand tool and make sure the Tolerance is set to something like 150. Then click on the black border with the Magic Wand tool, which will select your border. Once again, go to Edit -> Fill, and this will give you a clean-edged box for you Then simply de-select it again and there ya go!

If you want a perfect square box, when using the square tool, make sure the Style is set to Constrained Aspect Ratio. This will give you a perfect square It's the same if you happen to use the Circle/Elliptical Tool too

The reason why I do this on a layer of it's own, is that if I ever make a mistake or want to change it or move it around, I can do that on it's own layer, rather than putting it on the "background" layer and if I happen to mess something up, I don't have to worry about deleting my history or whatever

I hope that helps!

Wow, now this is very helpful. In fact, I may have to learn from it . . . I've always disliked the 'premade' word bubbles in Photoshop. I like the way you do yours!

*nods* I've tried using pre-made word bubbles, but trying to fit all the wording in there was hard. I actually learned how to make my own word bubbles on the Faux Pas web page (OzFoxes.com) they have a little tutorial there where they have their comic

I just like using the square/rectangle as my word bubbles, cuz I find I can fit more wording in there, but really, you can also use the elispe (oval) as well, in the same way
