Description The Odyne Configuration
“The Little Box of Pain”

Just over a month ago, the Pyramid Gallery received a parcel from a sender who simply refers to himself as “Ryan” which contained a newspaper clipping regarding the disappearance of a wealthy heiress, a letter and photograph of a Box previously unrecorded in “LeMarchand’s Dreams”.
There was no return address contained anywhere on or inside the envelope or on any of the delivered contents, but the letter signed by the sender read as follows:

“I’m not sure if this is a LeMarchand Box, or an Acerbus Box. It may not be either of those, but I have not seen it on any auctions sites or even your own website. In what little free time I have these I have days, I’ve taken the liberty of doing some research, and here are my findings:

The Odyne Configuration as it is called was purchased from an antique store in Tokyo, Japan, circa 1999-2000 by a wealthy American businessman as a wedding present for his heiress daughter. Sadly she was stood up at the altar, but her father, feeling terrible for what had occurred, gave her the Box as a means to take her mind off the events of her would-be wedding day.
Some five weeks later, the heiress disappeared, and the Odyne Configuration was found lying in a small pool of blood in her bedroom. The Box was promptly retained by Police to use as evidence in a possible murder case, only to disappear without a trace.

The next place which the Odyne Configuration turned up was at an orphanage in England sometime around 2005 where several children stated that a blind mute girl named “Annie” seemed to obsess over it for months, spending hours or even days with little to no food or sleep touching cool metal the surface of the Box before she ultimately disappeared one morning without a trace, this time without so much as a drop of blood left behind, and with her, the Box…

…which then resurfaced on September 1st, 2009, when my son-in-law, Dr. Alexi Jiang came to possess the Odyne Configuration. As I was helping Dr. Jiang get ready to be wed, a strange woman wearing a long black dress entered the room, placed the Box in his hand, and then told him to ‘never to forget who he is.’ She then abruptly disappeared.

I have not to slightest notion as to how that woman obtained the Box, how she knew my son-in-law or what became of those unlucky enough to come in contact with the Odyne Configuration, and I’m not sure if I want to find out. I would steal the Box and get rid of it, but I’m not sure if I really want to…or Dr. Jiang even wishes to part with it…”

I wasn't sure what category to put this in, so I chose "Macabre and Horror" simply for the darkish imagery.

So, awhile back ~pinkaphrodite suggested that I make Luciva her very own Puzzle Box, and after much thought on the matter, I finally said "Why not." It's been stated in several of the Hellraiser films, the original novella "The Hellbound Heart" and even the Hellraiser comics that hundreds, even thousands of Puzzle Boxes exist, each summoning different cenobites upon solution, and this Box is no exception.

~steelgohst 's custom Puzzle Boxes are made of pure awesome, and I wanted to try and make my own.

Upon being solved, Luciva and her own group of cenobites are summoned and 'ready for playtime'...unless of course the right person solves the Box, in which case the Odyne Configuration will take on its true form, and Luciva will forth with the ChatterBeast while the others stay behind and await the 'fresh meat' Luciva throws their way.

The Odyne Configuration itself was made with ~steelgohst 's "Box of Gateways Tutorial". My Box may not look quite as good as most of his, but being as this is my first attempt, I think it came out pretty damned good...even if I did cheat and use PhotoShop brushes for each of the sides.

As for the above "letter", I'm actually thinking of submitting it to the real Pyramid Gallery, but I need to ask permission from *screamin-jazzy first since one of her characters (Alexi Jiang) is mentioned.

this is really fantastic, and kinda hypnotic.
I am mesmerized by the amount of details and the work you must have put into them. It looks real, it looks like i could just pick it up and try to solve it, and it's a frightening thought.
Great work and instant fave.

Thank you so much. I have to admit I'm not into Hellraiser like I once was, but I still like this piece. ~steelgohst 's tutorial helped me A LOT when I made it.

Wow - excellent details. Great job on this.

I just wish the front was a little lighter so you could see more of the details.

But if the front was any lighter, the shadows might look inconsistent. Thanks.

Wow, it's cool that you made this yourself.
When you first look at it, it seems simple, but it is so full of detail I really like that, as well as the angle and that it's black and white ^-^
Nice work!

HotaruThodt In reply to Blackfirm [2009-10-18 14:01:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Truth be told, I kind of cheated and used PhotoShop brushes on each of those Box sides, but that didn't make it any easier when working out the perspective and lighting. >.>;

Awesome! *-* It looks really cool Hotaru. The flowery theme makes it very delicate and mysterious.
I just think the perspective's a bit weird, I know it's commonly used for cubes and boxes, but something about it bugs me everytime I draw it or see it. ._.
