Description One of the things I do actually enjoy about the recent DC reboot (yes, there are some good things about the reboot...dammit) is that DC FINALLY had the good sense to unite it's sister publication books, like Milestone and Wildstorm, into the current continuity. However, what shocks the hell out of me is that DC seems to be completely avoiding one of Wildstorm's biggest team books, the WildCATs. WildCATs essentially helped build Wildstorm, finding a unique play on the archtype of the Justice League (ultra raw-power hero, amazon type female warrior, lone brooding warrior, etc), but turned the archtype on its head, something that would eventually be re-done in books like Justice League Elite and The Authority.

So, with that said, going by my usual concept of 'if they can't do something right, do it yourself', I have decided to form my very own DC Reboot version of WildCATS. Enjoy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the Crisis and Bruce Wayne gains control over Checkmate, Bruce finds himself also in control of Checkmate's various splinter projects, such as Cadmus labs, the Suicide Squad, and a secret project Amanda Waller personally was forging simply known as 'WildCATS'
During the last year, the mercinary assassin known as Deathstroke the Terminator brutally murdered several heroes such as Ryan Choi (the Atom), the android Indigo, and brutally disfigured the hero Risk by slicing off both of his arms. However, Waller always had a backup plan. Using state of the art technology tying directly into the heroes abilities, she was able to 'bring back' these old heroes, new in form, but the same in mind and heart.
Ryan Choi's return was directly tied into his ability to grow and shrink his body. However, there was a slight side-effect. In his new containment suit, Ryan finds his powers have slightly altered his mind, meaning that the bigger he gets, the more thoughtless and savage he becomes. Still, Ryan is eager to help save the world as Maul.
Indigo, whose mind was discovered to be closely tied to the same circuitry as Super-Man enemy Brainiac, was fitted with a new body that allowed he to practically tap into the very Speed Force of the Flash itself, almost seeming to cease to be at will. FOr this power, Waller now called her Void.
Risk, argueably the luckiest of the 3 to still be alive, was fitted with new cyberbionic arms tied into his mind, giving him the ability to transform his arms (made from the same metal as the Metal Men) into any weapon he would want. For this, he is codenamed Warblade.
However, deep inside the WildCAT thinktank, two other heroes found themselves found, and groomed to eventually join this team. The alien warrior called Zealot, and the telepathic gun slinger called The Grifter. Grifter and Bruce actually had a team-up during his Batman days, soon earning Bruce's respect.
Bruce saw the noble intentions and decided that he wanted to unleash Project WildCATS through Checkmate. The only problem with the team? It lacked a leader.
That's when Bruce contacted Roy Harper.
Former sidekick to the Green Arrow (and the first young hero to distance himself from the Justice League), Roy found himself balancing his life as a single father and a superhero after taking on the identity of Arsenal, forming himself into his own hero. When Bruce contacted him about leading WildCATs, Roy immediatly said no, but it wasn't until Brue pointed out that WildCATs would completely be his responsibility, and that he is making Roy leader because he trusts him. Eventually, Roy accepts.
Arsenal. Zealot. The Grifter. Void. Warblade. Maul.
Together, they are DC's Convert Action Team.
Together, they are WildCATs.
Eh. Not really a fan of either character. I suppose they could show up down the road, though.
I'm not sure uniting the DC and Wildstorm continuities was such a good idea. The problem is that it becomes just too complicated to coordinate that many characters to make something coherent. In my opinion, DC should have lived up to their promise of making a "new52 Multiverse". Giving each comic book its own continuity (or having only a limited number of comic books share the same continuity) has more than a few advantages, like the fact that authors don't have to consult each other when they make drastic changes to characters or the world. For example, Azzarello could have made his Wonder Woman run with the changes he made to Diana, but in another comic book - let's say in Justice League - she could have kept her normal born-out-of-clay origins.
That said, making a WildCATs-like team out of DC heroes is truly an excellent idea (even though personally I would have done things like Bruce Timm and his team did in JLU: a very large Justice League whose members spontaneously start assembling into sub-teams). I also like the little changes you came up with for the "resurrected" heroes. I also like that you put this under Checkmate's supervision, but doesn't that make the leader of the WildCATs a (indirect) member of Bruce's team?
If DC would have simply kept the 52 alive and...well...frankly, not make most of the New 52 suck, I wouldn't have had to ever make my version of the New 52 at all. I did this project because I wanted to see what I could come up with if I followed the same rules and regulations DC had in its reboot, including united DC, Wildstorm, and Vertigo under one house.
My New 52 is sorta Bruce's vision. In a way, it is technically a giant JLU, but the only difference is that Bruce put together most of the teams himself. However, the only problem with a team of rotating members is that most of the heroes wouldn't be able to get to know eachother close enough, and that would make it hard for one hero to put his or her life into another hero's hands. Bruce knows this, so be it the League, Young Justice, Wildcats, or another of his other teams, he knows that each team needs a 'humanity' element.
As for the leader, Bruce sees Arsenal and all that has happened to him as more of a "this will teach him responsibility" rather then "you are my go-to guy". Bruce doesn't see Arsenal as his first draft pick, but he sees potential, and he thinks that giving him a shot at leading the WildCATS could make him into an even greater hero.
OH my GOSh this turned out SO incredible!
The way you have everyone posed-- it kind of reminds me of like one of those big shot poster thingies that you see every now and then of comic characters. This is so filled with life-- and ARUUUGH! I love it!
Beautiful job with the colors-- and the anatomy on each looks so good!
Fabulous job, sir!
