Did you right click on the original layer and press Duplicate? There's more than one way to do this process, but this is probably one of the easier ways.
If you did hit Duplicate, the duplicated layer should appear above the original layer in the list.

I hope so! I'll have to email you the background... it is really pretty. It's fitting for Christmas time - a leafless tree in the middle of winter.
