Description
It's finally finished.I hope you enjoy it, if anything is unclear, please feel free to leave a comment, I will try to elaborate. I'm prettysure everything is clear, but I made the hat, so it might not be clear to everyone.
Here's mine!
Part One
Edit: The reason I have not put what the seam allowance values, is simply because the fabric has to fit snugly against the cardboard base. I don't want to put a set amount, and have wrinkly hats out there. Thicker fabrics will fit differently than thing ones. So, if you make the hat, sew it to make it as snug as possible to the base, and then cut off the surplus, leaving approximately 1/4" seam allowance.
**If you use this tutorial to make your own hat, please have the courtesy of putting a link back to my tutorial, and leave a comment here with a link to your deviation so that I can see your masterpiece!!

I have a quick question for you: when you say sew some elastic on 'either side of the inside' how exactly do you mean? I get that it helps hold your top-hat on somehow, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how.
Help would be very much appreciated at your earliest convenience. (:

You cut a piece of elastic long enough to fit around your noggin (usually under your nape) and glue each end to the inside of the hat where it will hold it to your head. It's best to put the hat on the way you want to wear it, and then figure out the elastic placement.

Just found your tutorial while using Google search...wanted to say THANK YOU for making it! I want to make a mini top hat this summer (if I get the time), and this is by far the best tutorial out there, haha (for minis or full sized). When I finish I'll be sure to link back to your tutorial, and show off what I make XD But again, thank you!

Something like this would be perfect for finishing off my Lolita outfit! Thanks so much for the tutorial; I've been looking everywhere for a decent top hat but they're always so expensive! I'm so making this this weekend! It's just gorgeous! And it's a good thing I bought some ribbons and trimmings the other day!
Have I ever told you I love you?

I made my top hat! I made it whilst watching Kate and Wills Wedding (You can tell I'm British can't you? =3=) and it took me less than a day! I just need to figure out how to attach it to my head now...

Cool You can use a thin black elastic, that seems to work the best.

Ok. Or I could attach it via a comb or headband if I stitch it in the right place.

i have a question, im doing a hat that involves putting fake flowers around the hats bottom, how do i make them stay? Hot glue? Sewing? help!

Idzit In reply to MeliZbeauty [2011-03-23 06:21:20 +0000 UTC]
That's totally up to you. If you plan on using your hat for more than one style, then stitch them on, or pin them. If you don't really care, then hot glue them.
Hope this helps.

I love this tutorial since it's the best one I've seen as well as the cheapest one. Although I already sewn my hat's crown and cut out the patterns from a different tutorial. The process for attaching the tip is very similar to yours, but I'm hoping that you might be able to help me make some sense from it.

The highlights are the patterns, and I'm making the mini top hat in this one. I think the dark highlighted one is the tip, but it's a half circle. So I made a full circle with it (although it looks much more like an oval). I'm wondering if I can use your method to attach my tip to the crown. The tip seems way too big in my opinion, any ideas?

what a helpful tutorial!
i might use this one day xDDD
but i will definitely keep this tutorial in mind!
I think you can also avoid the elastic problem by using Ribbons
it's pretty much the same thing, but doesn't snap at your face xDD

Idzit In reply to Xiela [2009-10-13 03:39:35 +0000 UTC]
Super! Can't wait to see what you make!
Ribbons suck to tie under hair at the back of your head, they always get caught and that hurts. But if it's going under the chin, then that'd be fine.

Thanks a lot for that tutorial!! I'm going to a manga/anime/cosplay/japan stuff convention next week and since I can't make myself a real costume, I wanted to make a little top hat.
Does it work with any fabric, or should I get something particular? Thanks again for the tuto!!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Idzit In reply to Aelve [2009-06-28 03:12:27 +0000 UTC]
It works with prettymuch anything, but you'll have an easier time doing this if the fabric has little to no stretch. Good luck! I can't wait to see what you make!
