Description
Not an astrolabe.Process:
The "Cosmolabe" was made of layered brass sheets:
I did the designs for the markings in Illustrator, printed them out reversed and inverted on a transparency from a laser printer, ironed them onto the brass (with judicious use of a sharpie for clean-up) and acid etched them with the circuit board fluid you can get at Radio Shack. Then I cut out the pieces with a jeweler's saw and filed them smooth. The permanently fixed pieces were riveted together using small brass brads.

This is very lovely. I like the sharpness of the etched symbols. I am not familiar with circuitboard etching substances... how are they used? Do you have to paint them on using the ink for reference, or does the fluid contain microscopic metal-eating gnomes who are very picky eaters and only eat metal that is inked black?
...and if it is the later, has this been cleared with any rights boards? Thank you for reading this, and also thank you for creating this marvelous piece.

Thank you very much!
It's those pesky metal munching gnomes... and they hate the taste of laserjet ink or sharpies so they eat the metal that ISN'T inked black. You have to remember to print your pattern in reverse.

This is a really amazing piece! Inspiring, in fact. I've just read a bit about the process, and I have a couple questions, if you have the time to answer them.
1. You said that you used a jeweler's saw - how in the world do you keep it steady and not end up with crooked surfaces?
3. How long did you let it sit in the acid bath?

Thank you!
1. Practice... and small files to clean up afterward.
2. Yes.
3. 20 minutes. Longer if it's cold weather.

This is a really great piece of work. In some way the purpose of it is kind of like the Stargate. Just as a reference.

I want to learn to do stuff like this... the process alone is fascinating and sounds like it takes a lot of patience, but add to that the intense amount of skill and... wow. Beautiful work!
