Description
Not an astrolabe.Process:
The "Cosmolabe" was made of layered brass sheets:
I did the designs for the markings in Illustrator, printed them out reversed and inverted on a transparency from a laser printer, ironed them onto the brass (with judicious use of a sharpie for clean-up) and acid etched them with the circuit board fluid you can get at Radio Shack. Then I cut out the pieces with a jeweler's saw and filed them smooth. The permanently fixed pieces were riveted together using small brass brads.

It sounds at the same time complex, but like something even *I*d be able to do, with the right amount of time! No special instruments used? You sure? That looks wicked cool...

The only "special" tools I used was a jeweler's saw to cut the brass. otherwise it was just a few common tools. Each part was relatively simple but when they're all put together it looks pretty good.

How awesome! Makes me want to put something together like that. <_< I'll have to ponder what it is I'd like, and then I think I will! Are there any around-the-house or other craft items that would work for a jeweler's saw? And can one find sheets of brass or such at places like Hobby Lobby, or would it have to be somewhere more specialized?

A really good hobby store should have brass sheets and possibly jeweler's saws, too. But you can use a coping saw with a metal cutting blade in it (available at most hardware stores). It will just be somewhat coarser of a cut than from a jeweler's saw. (More filing to do.)

I think I actually have a friend with a jeweler's saw! My mom might even have one O_o we're a big craft family, just usually not metalwork, lol.

Gorgeous. Almost makes me want to try my hand at making not-astrolabes too. Except, I would probably fail.
Congrats on the DD!

Thank you!
Go ahead and give it a try! You should see some of the failures I've churned out before getting it right... but you won't, 'cause I don't post theme here! (LOL!)
Go on and have fun... it's a neat technique.

This is possibly the most amazing thing I've ever seen made by things you can find so easily. This is going straight to my favorites. You most definitely deserved the DD.

It's based on an astrolabe but uses symbols instead of astronomical objects.
