HI GUYS I FINALLY DID A TUTORIALI definitely said I'd do this a long time ago but I never took enough screenshots for it. I recorded my process this time so I finally managed to get this done. I hope this is useful and teaches you something new

they start off on different layers but get merged into one layer in the middle when i start refining the picture

I've been trying to do your blending method but I don't get it. I use the exact brush stuff and everything but it never comes out as smooth as yours, instead it looks choppy and I can see all of the strokes and it just doesn't blend. Please help

some things you can try with the blending:
- using larger brush size
- pressing softly with the pen (make sure your tablet has good pressure sensitivity and the relevant settings are turned on)
- try using different motions like dabbing or dotting instead of strokes
other than that i can only suggest u spend a lot of time just practising and experimenting with brush settings (they dont have to be the same as mine to achieve the same effect). hope it helps!! good luck

Thank you so much! I just found your DeviantArt today! Your art is beautiful and this tutorial, (I can tell) will help me with my newly found love for digital art. I'm going to be getting a tablet soon and will be working on my art with that instead of using my mouse! And I was thinking of changing over to SAI painting studio rather then what I'm using now (Corel painter)Β

i wish you the best of luck with digital art and i hope you enjoy your tablet! it's a big step up from a mouse and definitely makes drawing so much easier. if you do plan on trying SAI, it has a 30 day trial period and i highly rec you save it for when you have your tablet so you can try it out with the pen pressure

as for tips if you're new to drawing, here's a few off the top of my head:
- draw in a wide range of styles, not just anime style, but also realism, comic book, cartoon, etc. a lot of people say you should start from drawing realistic style only, but i think that can be unnecessarily boring, especially if you're drawing as a hobby. when you're drawing different styles, you can learn new things even if you don't draw it again.
- learn about the basics about lighting, shape, space, colours, etc. like when you're drawing a body, break it down into basic shapes like cylinders and cubes. i think it's important foundational skills to have for drawing, and you'll have to learn them sooner or later
- always try new things! i think i've said this before, but trying to draw new types of things, like planes, animals, cars, or trying new methods or mediums for drawing can be incredibly helpful, even if you feel like you won't succeed at it. like, even if you draw a bad plane, you'll still end up learning things from it and you'll come away from it a bit better at drawing than you were before.
i think those are probably some of the biggest things i can think of? but honestly, do whatever makes you happy! for a lot of people, improving at drawing makes them happy, but if at any point you feel like it's boring or annoying or exhausting, just go back to drawing whatever makes you happy! i hope that helps somewhat

Just a question, is this only for Photoshop? Cause I use SketchClub on my iPad. I also have to use my fingers to draw since I don't have a stylus. xDΒ
If not, do you think I could sort of merge this with the app? It's similar to photoshop and gimp, I think, except it doesn't have some of the stuff that comes with those. Eg: the gradient map and levels?Β

ah I'm glad it helps!
The main program I use to draw in this is PaintTool SAI for Windows, it has some unique brushes that blend colours really well, something that doesn't seem to be a part of other programs like Photoshop or GIMP. Personally I like the brushes in SAI, but Photoshop or GIMP are by no means inferior and many other people prefer those programs! I'm not sure how SketchClub or iPad painting in general works, but the overall techniques for drawing should be similar, so in the end it depends on how you personally like to draw.
As for editing features like gradient map or levels, I'm sure there are photo-editing apps available for iOS that can do similar functions, since those features aren't specific to drawings and really you can use any sort of image-editing app to adjust your final drawing.

I don't understand what is meant here by "lineless". I see lines all over the finished product. Can you show me what would be a "lined" painting as a point of reference, so I know what the differences are supposed to be?

mmm what I meant by "lined" pictures are something likeΒ fav.me/d6hqvbi or fav.me/d6i0vh7 where the artist makes a very neat and clean lineart first and then adds colours on layers underneath, whereas what I referred to as "lineless" is where there isn't a lineart layer, and some lines are added near the end of the drawing process on the same layer as the colours. I suppose different people use the term differently, some people wouldn't consider this "lineless", but I used the term because it's not the usual lineart that is used ^^
