Yeah, you know his name...
I don't plan to take this TOO far, simply because there's no real profit in it. I'll probably finish cleaning it all up, but I can't sell prints or even include this illustration in a book of collected work without stepping on their copyright, so I expect I'll just clean it up and then lay it aside as a bit of fun. Only one of those loosely sketched Guenhwyvars is going to be cleaned, most likely the one that curves around his legs. For one reason, it's a more interesting pose than the somewhat static profile, and for another, it hides his legs. His legs, for whatever reason, were absolutely kicking my ass, which just goes to show that no matter how good you think you might be, you can still be stymied by something stupid like the position of feet. It's messy down there 'cause I must have erased and redrawn and erased and redrawn a dozen times.
It's all in red, of course, so it'll strip out nicely when I'm done. But next time you're feeling frustrated by something that just will not work, it might make you feel better to know that it happens to me all the damn time.

I was mad yesterday drawing a hand... a simply women hand .. the piece was a banshee (kind of dwarf/vampire or something like that) looking to you and calling... the front hand makes me mad... cause it was in perspetive and the fingers where all so wierd o.O ...
anyways.... you have the skills .. so go on for it :^^:

wonderful art. i definately say keep working on it. i like the idea of lions/large felines being underlings, and you've already captured so much emotion in the loose poses.

I'd like to take credit, but this character is completely designed by people I don't even know. His cat is actually an astral being that he summons when needed, a 400-lb black panther named Guenhwyvar... I'm afraid I made her a little more leonine and pantherish, but 400 lbs. is a big damn cat no matter how you spin it.
Check out the books by R.A. Salvatore if you get a chance, they're pretty easy to find.

Thank you, THANK YOU for being one of the few artists to realize Drizzt isn't some dried up old man. God, remember the first Elmore painting where he was black as in African black? I was pretty stunned that made it by. Anyways, great work, especially on the cat.

I don't so much mind the use of brown as a base tone for the "black skin" of the drow... it certainly seems more natural than blue, but check out the skin of some African or Australian natives and you can see how deeply black a skin tone can be. If I were to take this to color, I'd probably use a deep, rich red-brown tone with minimal highlights.
I don't much blame the original artists for illustrating Drizzt as old, since he is about 70 or 80, and it's likely that they only ever got a short paragraph to describe a completely unknown (at the time) character. Cover artists rarely have the benefit of a complete understanding of their subjects.
WOTC has since had Lockwood illustrate brand-new covers for all of the first trilogy, and I personally think they're excellent. You can check 'em out at his website (there's a lot of great stuff in there, actually).

Yeah, I'm familiar with the darker skinned Africans and aboriginies (sp way off) you're speaking of. But it still strikes me as a big slip up. Alot of fandom is derived from illustrations, so that could have easily become a feud back in the day. But it didn't, so I should just shove off.
And yeah, I sympathize with the artist only having a slight amount of info on what's going on, s'not their fault.
Lockwood HAS done some excellent work on these newer fantasy novels for WotC, but he's never failed to impress me.

Swords and armor look great, I lieke the cape alot too, very dynamic. The tigers or whatever, are a nice touch! Cool stuff.

The character goes around with a big black panther for common company. Just one, though... the more profiled one came first but it was too boring. I liked the shape well enough to not erase it, though.
